2018 Château l'Eglise-Clinet Pomerol

The L'Eglise Clinet 2018 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Maturation took place in 70% new barriques. In the glass the wine is deep ruby red in color and opens with a stunning earthy perfume, accentuated by notes of wild mushrooms, mossy tree bark and minerality (wet pebble) and after some rolling gives way to a core of black raspberries, plum preserves and fresh blueberries plus a hint of lavender clove oil. The palate is medium to full and bursting with energy, with slow-release black fruit and earthy layers, framed by very ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic tension. It ends with epic length and subtlety. It's already so evocative and beautifully expressed at this youthful stage that it's tempting to bring it up right away, but give it another 5-6 years to really fan its feathers, and drink it for the next 40 years or more on.

The vineyards of L'Eglise Clinet cover approximately 4.2 hectares and are located on Pomerol's famous clay and gravel soils. These soils are ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the domain's main grape varieties. Also relevant to mention is that the vineyards of L'Eglise Clinet border those of Chateau Petrus, so where L'Eglise Clinet stops begins Petrus. L'Eglise Clinet is located in the heart of Pomerol, a small but highly renowned wine region on the right bank of the Dordogne River. The winery has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The vineyard was formed in its current form in the mid-20th century by the Mauléon and Rouchut families.
