Description
Pujanza belongs to the modern-style Rioja and also has the great advantage of its high-altitude vineyards (the Pujanza Norte comes from one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja). This gives the wine the typical Rioja character, yet with great elegance and freshness. It's the top model and flagship of Bodegas Pujanza. The wine comes from the Cisma vineyard, located at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria at an altitude of 600 meters. The vines are over 100 years old (pre-phylloxera and ungrafted) and cover only 0.8 hectares. As you may know, after the grape disease in the early 1900s, almost all the vines were destroyed, and all new plantings were grafted onto resistant American vines. 99% of all vineyards are based on grapes grafted onto American vines, but there are still a number of authentic, very small vineyards that still have the unique original vines that have not been grafted, and Cisma is one of these rare examples.
The Cisma is already among the international elite and has achieved cult status (especially considering the limited number of bottles of this top-quality wine). The wine was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels and then bottle-aged for over a year. This is a highly complex wine. In the glass, it has a beautiful ruby red color. It has an intense nose with seductive aromas of red and black berries, delicate roasted notes, soft fresh herbs, leather, truffle, licorice, and beautiful mineral notes (pencil point). Intense and powerful, it has an impressive attack with flavors of candied fruit. On the palate, the attack is very refined with silky tannins and beautifully refreshing acidity. Perfectly balanced with a beautiful structure and a persistent and long finish. Clearly one of the greatest Riojas in existence. Only 1,070 bottles of this unique wine were produced. All bottles are numbered.

The last time I sampled the range here, I tasted the unfinished 2014 Cisma before it was bottled because it's a wine that is not produced every vintage and they didn't produce it in 2013. Thus, I was looking forward to seeing the finished wine and, even better, seeing it next to the 2015. It's sourced from the Finca La Valcabada, a 0.8-hectare vineyard that was planted with Tempranillo vines in 1920. The soils are deeper and rich in clay, and it's located at 600 meters altitude. In this case, the destemmed grapes fermented in a 1,700-kilo oak vat with indigenous yeasts and then matured in French oak barrels for some 16 months. When the wine was waiting to be bottled, it was showing some influence from the élevage. Now it feels quite powerful and ripe (it's 15% alcohol). This feels like a great vintage for Cisma, with the stuffing to develop nicely in bottle. 1,110 bottles were filled in September 2016.
There is a new white from Pujanza, Anteportalatina, which is the same wine as the Añadas Frías, from the same vineyard that names it but from riper vintages. Most reds were from 2015, a warm and ripe vintage (all wines are 15% alcohol) when they did soft extractions to avoid heavy wines. It's a short and very healthy crop. The wines are gentle, perfumed, balanced and powerful.
As for 2017, their vineyards didn't suffer any frost, so yields were high and they got a very healthy crop, very unusual for the region.

Bodegas Pujanza is located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The winery is located in one of the most beautiful villas in this region. A real prime location in the most beautiful part of the Rioja. Bodegas Pujanza is one of the youngest (top) Rioja houses and started in June 2002. It is a family business with a long tradition of growing grapes and wine making in the capital of the Rioja Alavesa. The location in the valley of the Ebro and the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, partly determines the character of the Pujanza wines.
Owner Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards and with an almost manic approach, they try to improve the quality of the wines even further. Pujanza is one of the new style winemakers in the Rioja such as Remirez de Ganuza and Tentenublo where the focus is on absolute top quality with emphasis on the fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker without exception rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honor division) says enough. The 4 main wines are the Hado, the Valdepoleo (in the past this wine was called the Pujanza Pujanza) the Norte and the cult wine the Cisma.
Carlos is one of the pioneers together with Remirez de Ganuza in the field of modern style Rioja's and has the luxury that his vineyards are situated high so that there are good differences between day and night temperature. This gives the wines extra complexity and freshness. Carlos only works with single vineyards except at the Hado (here the grapes are used from the norte and Valdepoleo vineyards). Carlos has divided all 3 vineyards into plots (except the Cisma vineyard because it is so small) and all these plots are vinified separately. Only just before bottling, the various plots are combined until it has the desired taste and then it is bottled. This concept is far from economical but does make for great wines. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he deliberately chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to raise the wines longer in large (used) barriques.
Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of this renowned winery and supplies both consumers and Horeca and Retail.
