Description
Contador is one of the crown jewels of Rioja, blessed by the legendary 100 points of guru Robert Parker Jr.'s tasting team, over two consecutive vintages: 2004 and 2005 and thereafter only wines between 95-100 points. It is the work of Benjamin Romeo, who has managed to realize the potential of Rioja. to show when you produce in very short runs with only focus on the very best.
The Benjamín Romeo Collection Nº 3 El Chozo Del Bombón is a powerful and concentrated Tempranillo that certainly needs some time to age. The Tempranillo grapes come from a 50 year old plot planted in brown limestone soils. The quality of the tannins is great but are certainly still present in the youthful years. The nose is clean, with abundant ripe black fruit and lots of spice and a hint of milk. This is the oakiest of all red wines from Benjamin Romeo. The wine is fermented in small oak barrels with native yeasts and aged in 100% new French casks, which is the house style that is more apparent here than with its siblings. In June 2020, 2,400 bottles were filled and after that the wine was bottled for another 9 months and was only released at the beginning of 2021.

The one wine that seems in need of some bottle age is the powerful and concentrated Tempranillo 2016 Colección Nº 3 El Chozo Del Bombón, produced with the grapes from a 50-year-old plot planted in brown limestone soils. The quality of the tannins is better than the number 1 in the Colección, but they are still present. The nose is clean, with abundant ripe black fruit and plenty of spices and a lactic touch. This is the oakiest of all the reds I tasted this time. Like the rest of the lineup, it fermented in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 100% new French barrels, which is the house style that comes through more clearly here than in its siblings. 2,400 bottles were filled in June 2018.
Benjamín Romeo works 75 plots of vines that total some 47 hectares and produces around 150,000 bottles of the ultimate modern Rioja. This year there is a new and very showy white in the collection. The 2016 reds were impressive, among the best in recent times, and the 2017 Contador was exceptional for such a difficult year. These are modern and hedonistic expression of Rioja and Tempranillo.

The Beginning in the Cave (1996-2000) The story of Bodega CONTADOR begins in 1995, when winemaker Benjamin Romeo purchases an ancient cave under the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra - La Rioja. He made his first wine "La Cueva Del Contador" from his 1996 harvest. In 1999, the first year of the now renowned top wine "Contador" is a fact.
The garage (2001-2007) 2001 is the year that Benjamin Romeo also furnishes the garage of his childhood home in San Vicente for winemaking, in addition to the cave, with which he increases production capacity. Robert Parker awards the 2004 and 2005 volumes of "Contador", made in the garage, with the highest rating possible: 100 points and the international prestige of Benjamin Romeo wines is a fact.
Bodega CONTADOR (2008-present) The new bodega will open on June 21, 2008, located at the foot of the San Vicente de la Sonsierra, surrounded by a diversity of vineyards that include unique wines such as "Predicador, La Cueva Del Contador, La Viña De Andres Romeo en Contador "and" Qué Bonito Cacareaba "
