Description
The Solaia is a SuperTuscan, a Bordeaux blend with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 20% Sangiovese. The name Solaia comes from Il Sole, Italian for the sun. The vineyards for this top wine from Marchese Antinori are 10 hectares in size and are located on the south-west slopes at an altitude between 350 and 400 meters. The soil is stony with marble. They are located in the area of Santa Cristina - Val di Pesa in the Chianti Classico zone, next to the vineyards of the Tignanello wine. This top wine from Antinori is only made in the top years
The Solaia is a full ruby red wine with beautiful aromas of black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, plums and preserved fruit. The taste is soft and completely in balance with the smell, with hints of fruit, liquorice and coffee to taste. The tannins are not overpowering and ensure that the wine has a nice full aftertaste.
The fully ripe grapes were already picked in mid-September. After picking, the Sangiovese grapes were fermented for a period of about 7 days, at a temperature of about 25Cº and the Cabernet grapes for 10 days. The further maturation of the wine takes place in French oak barriques. The blend was made in November, after which the further maturation continued for 12 months in the barriques. The wine was then bottled and stored for another 12 months in the cellars of the domain to be able to mature further.

August 2021 Week 4, The Wine Advocate
The Marchesi Antinori 2018 Solaia reveals a silky and elegant personality, and the wine steps away from some of the more robust fruit weight and dark concentration that we've seen in the past. This elegant vintage prizes fruit purity and focus with black plum, cassis, blue flower, pencil shaving and lots of sweet spice from the oak that recalls clove and toasted almond. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The fruit is harvested at the Antinori family's Tenuta Tignanello at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. The percentage of Cabernet Franc used in the blend is the ultimate Solaia wild card. In this vintage, the Franc has been increased to 7%, and that number is expected to be even higher in 2019 as the vines get older and the fruit more complex. Production of Solaia is 65,000 bottles in this vintage. This is a beautiful wine, but if pressed I must admit a preference for the 2018 Tignanello (the other celebrated wine crafted at this property). The 2018 Solaia is delicious on all fronts as expected, but the 2018 Tignanello struck at my heart strings. Either way, these are stunning results.
There is some exciting news to report from Antinori's Tenuta Tignanello (which I visited the last week of July). The Antinori family was able to acquire a new parcel measuring 15 hectares adjacent to their historic Tignanello plots, thus giving new space and production possibilities to the various wines made at the celebrated estate (where both Tignanello and Solaia are born).

Issue: Oct 15, 2021

Tasting Note
Vibrant black currant, violet, vanilla and toasty oak flavors are the hallmarks of this classy red, which is succulent and balanced, with fine grip and a long, fruit-, iron- and spice-tinged aftertaste. More on the elegant side than powerful, yet this would benefit from an additional two to three years aging. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2040. 500 cases imported. — BS

From: Chianti Classico & Neighbors: Looking at the 2020s and 2019s (Jul 2022)
The 2018 Solaia continues to develop beautifully. Resonant and ample on the palate, with tons of vibrancy, the 2018 offers terrific vibrancy as well as character. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, blackberry jam, licorice and spice build as the Solaia gains momentum over time. The 2018 is dense and beautifully layered, yet retains the mid-weight structure of this super elegant vintage.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2022
CEO Renzo Cotarella and his team continue to move the Antinori wines in the direction of elegance over power. Recent vintages have provided the ideal conditions to do that. Tignanello and Solaia, the family flagships, naturally get most of the attention, but I am increasingly impressed with the entry-level wines, all of which are now made from estate fruit, which is remarkable at these volumes.

Marquis Piero Antinori is in charge and is assisted by his three daughters: Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Funny those three A's. We are not going to bother you with all the awards that have been received over the years, because then this price list can no longer go through the letterbox. There are two red wines that are available on allocation and that one would like to get a few bottles from all over the world and that are Tignanello and Solaia and we also have these in our range at Grandcruwijnen.
In 1180, Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccino were officially named as owners of Castello di Combiate; a century later, the family who had moved to Florence were included in the register of the silk trade cooperative. In 1385, Giovanni di Piero, an indirect descendant, entered the wine guild as an apprentice. Since then, the wine-growing tradition of the Antinori family has been continuous. With the establishment of the Marchesi Antinori winery, the peak was reached in 1895 and already in 1898 the winery was built in San Casciano Val di Pesa, which is still the center of the widely branched group of properties in all major cultivation areas of Tuscany, Umbria. , Piemonte (since the early 90s through the purchase of the wine cellar Prunotto), Apulia and even California. The traditional house participating in the modern Tuscan wine-growing revolution owes much of its prestige to its former chief vinologist Giacomo Tachis, who produced exceptional wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello (especially sangiovese), Solaia (especially cabernet) and many others. the other was responsible. Vinologist Renzo Cotarella also created one of the best chardonnays in Italy in the Umbrian Castello della Sala.
