One family: Antinori, one passion: Wine. Brothers Piero and Lodovico Antinori own the magnificent Tenuta di Biserna in Tocane. According to Parker, "Tenuta di Biserno remains one of the best-kept secrets in Bolgheri." The Biserno is named after the winery because the wine reflects the terroir and microclimate of the winery's surroundings. A beautiful way to name your wine. Only the finest grapes are selected for the blend, resulting in a wine of depth, intensity, complexity, longevity, and elegance.
The flagship Tenuta di Biserno Biserno is a rich, beautiful, and sultry wine. Deep ruby red in the glass, this 2020 vintage exudes so much life and intensity, packed with black fruit, spice, tar, and sweet tobacco. The aromas are presented with seamless transitions, and the finish is exceptionally long. This wine displays maturity yet also offers elegance, making the difference between good and excellent. This wine will improve even further with time in the cellar and has excellent aging potential for 15+ years.

1. Grilled entrecote with rosemary, black pepper and grilled bell pepper
The juicy, fatty meat softens the firm tannins and brings out the dark fruit, while the herbs and paprika enhance the spicy profile.
2. Ravioli filled with mushrooms and truffle, served with sage butter
The earthy notes of mushroom and truffle complement the wine's deep complexity, while the buttery sauce emphasises its velvety texture.
3. Leg of lamb with garlic, thyme and roasted aubergine
The spicy lamb reflects the Mediterranean herb aromas in the wine, while eggplant and garlic deepen the mouthfeel.
4. Beef stew with red wine, carrot and bay leaf
Slow-cooked meat and aromatic spices complement the wine's ripe, spicy structure, creating a harmonious balance.
5. Fried veal sweetbreads with roasted fennel and beurre rouge
The sweetbreads' soft texture mirrors the wine's mouthfeel. The fennel and wine sauce enhance the spiciness and refined acidity.
6. Venison fillet with cherry sauce, parsnip cream and juniper berries
The powerful flavour of game matches the intensity of the wine, while cherry and spices accentuate the fruity and spicy profile.

The Tenuta di Biserno 2017 Biserno is hushed at first, almost sottovoce, and it builds its intensity carefully and slowly one little decibel at a time. The aromas expand, the acidity brightens and the tannins flesh out as the wine opens in the glass. These elements come together with narrowing focus. This is a seamless and incredibly smooth blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that offers a full gamut of dark fruit, spice and cured tobacco. Given ample time to open, the generosity of the bouquet is not necessarily matched by the mouthfeel that ultimately feels a bit pinched or short on the close. This is a common characteristic I saw in many of the other blended Tuscan reds made in this scorching hot vintage.

This has a beautifully polished nose of blueberry, plum, walnut husk, cocoa, roasted coffee bean, praline and vanilla. It’s full-bodied and concentrated with ripe, velvety tannins. Lovely depth and focus. Superb. One of the best in a long time. Drink from 2023.

Antonio Galloni, December 2020
The 2017 Biserno is a prototypical modern Bolgheri red built on explosive power and textural intensity. Rich and ample, with tons of pure richness, the 2017 Biserno is so alluring. This blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot is exceptionally vivid and beautiful today. Dark fruit, espresso, cloves and new French oak build into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. It will drink well for another decade or so, but I don’t get the impression of a wine built for the long haul.

In 1995, Lodovico Antinori discovered the potential of an area on the outskirts of Bolgheri for viticulture. After an evaluation, he saw the unique characteristics of this area and was convinced that he could create something new and unique in the wine world. A few years later, the Antinori family (Piero, Lodovico, Ilaria and his son Niccolò) and landowner Umberto Mannoni started founding Tenuta di Biserno. Adjacent to the historic village of Bolgheri, with a beautiful view of the Tyrrhenian sea.
The Tuscan winery has 49 hectares of estate and is located in Alta Maremma in western Tuscany between the hills of Bibbona. Due to the specific soil and climate characteristics, the area is divided into two zones. The Bolgheri area has a subsoil of rock; on these 40 hectares, the vines for Biserno and Il Pino di Biserno are planted. The vines planted on the vineyards are mainly Cabernet Franc and Merlot and in smaller quantities Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tenuta Campo di Sasso, on the other hand, has 56 hectares with mixed (and mainly) sandy soils. This area is close to the sea and is therefore very suitable for varieties such as Syrah and Vermentino. Occhione and Insoglio del Cinghiale come from this area.
