Description
The history of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia and the terroir of Bolgheri
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori in Bolgheri, an emerging top area on the Tuscan coast. Its proximity to the sea, temperate Mediterranean climate and diverse soils make it ideal for international grape varieties. Since 2005, the winery has been owned by the Frescobaldi family. Ornellaia has become a world reference in the field of modern Italian top wines and is internationally acclaimed for its complex and balanced Bordeaux-style blends.
Ornellaia's style and the Vendemmia d'Artista art project
Each year, the Ornellaia wine is given a thematic name that reflects the character of the vintage, as part of the Vendemmia d'Artista art project. For 2014, the name “L'Essenza” was chosen, which refers to the pure, understated style of this vintage. Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto was commissioned to express this theme with a site-specific artwork and unique bottle labels. The project connects art with wine and supports the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation's 'Mind's Eye' initiative, which makes art accessible to people with visual impairments.
2017 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Magnum: grapes, harvest and vinification
The 2017 harvest was influenced by a warm and dry summer. Thanks to timely interventions in the vineyard, the quality of the grapes remained exceptionally high. The blend of this vintage consists of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Franc. The grapes were harvested manually between late August and early October. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, malolactic fermentation followed in barriques, 70% of which were new. Maturation lasted for 18 months, followed by 12 months of bottle aging in the cellar before the wine was released.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2017 Ornellaia Magnum
The 2017 Ornellaia has a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. On the nose, the wine opens with notes of black cherry, plums, dried herbs, espresso and graphite. The taste is full and rich, with silky tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the whole in balance. The finish is long, with layered fruit notes, spiciness and subtle wood influences. The magnum packaging offers extra aging potential and makes this wine ideal for special occasions or cellar rest.

This vintage of Ornellaia is called Solare and represents the 12th edition in the estate's Vendemmia d'Artista series featuring artwork by Tomás Saraceno. His beautiful art depicts a radiant sun halo and is intended as a symbol of sustainability. That theme of sunshine and warmth is particularly well suited to a vintage such as this. The Ornellaia 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is generous and fruit-forward with dense richness and concentration all driven by the smaller and more compact berry size that characterizes this dry, hot growing season. Black and purple fruits segue to spice, tobacco, leather and some of those beautiful Mediterranean notes of black olive and wild sage. These various moving pieces work together in perfect harmony. The tannins are beautifully managed here. If you consider the more astringent and rougher approach of the mid-tier Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, this wine shows a whole other level of magnificent tannic management that could not have been easy given the diminutive berry size. This vintage sees a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard soils are characterized by reddish sand with calcareous rock. The wine is fermented in both stainless steel and cement and is transferred over to barrique to finish malolactic fermentation. It ages in barrique for 18 months followed by another 12 months in bottle. Some 150,000 bottles were released in April 2020.

A big, rich wine for the vintage, yet poised and lively with firm, chewy tannins that give form and intensity to the wine. It shows loads of blackberry, blackcurrant and walnut flavors. Ripe yet polished tannins. Give this three or four years to come together.

A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing mélange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb!
- By Antonio Galloni on July 2019
Readers will find plenty to like in these new and upcoming releases from Ornellaia. The 2018s, which I tasted prior to bottling, show the mid-weight style of the year. The winemaking team led by Axel Heinz opted for longer macerations in 2018, with the goal of getting as much out of the wines as possible. Vintage 2017 posed an entirely different set of challenges. The harvest was early and condensed, while winemaking was much gentler.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
