Soldera Case Basse and the continuation of an iconic tradition

Soldera Case Basse is one of Italy's most admired estates. The Soldera family continues the work Gianfranco Soldera established since the 1970s, with the same dedication to the purity, precision, and natural expression of Sangiovese. The estate maintains a strict quality regime, extremely low yields, and vinification focused entirely on preserving elegance and tension. Under the Winery tab, you'll find extensive background information on Case Basse's heritage and philosophy.

The terroir of Case Basse and its exceptional location

The Case Basse vineyards are located southwest of Montalcino, at an altitude of approximately 320 meters. Due to their exposed position facing the Tuscan coast, the vines benefit from constant airflow that carries away rain and hail, creating a stable microclimate. The soils consist of schistose galestro with fossil deposits, poor and perfectly draining. These conditions encourage the old vines to develop deep roots and produce grapes with aromatic complexity and ideal acidity.

The high canopy and generous planting distance ensure airy, healthy bunches. Mechanical intervention is limited; new plantings only yield fruit after eight years, which may be retained. Only perfectly ripe grapes are used, and selection is strict and entirely manual.

The Sangiovese grape and natural vinification

The 2017 Soldera Case Basse 100% Sangiovese follows the same traditional method that has made the estate world-famous. Grapes are destemmed and fermented as whole berries with indigenous yeasts. This takes place in large, conical Slavonian oak vats of 138 hectoliters, filled no more than 60 to 70 percent full. This ensures a healthy, consistent fermentation.

Fermentation typically takes two to three weeks. Pumpovers are used sparingly and only when necessary for optimal extraction. All processes occur without temperature manipulation. The family monitors the process daily through tasting and chemical analysis.

Maturation and evolution of the 2017 vintage

After fermentation, the wine matures slowly and continuously in Slavonian oak botti of varying ages. These traditional large barrels are intensively maintained, providing a neutral and pure environment in which the Sangiovese can develop freely.

Maturation lasts up to four years. The 2017 was bottled after bottling before release. The style focuses on tension, length, and aromatic precision. In vintages like 2017, where maturation began early and the summer was warm, the wine shows slightly more depth in the mid-palate and a riper fruit expression without sacrificing elegance.

Color, smell and taste of the 2017 Soldera Case Basse 100% Sangiovese

In the glass, the wine displays a vibrant ruby red color. The aroma opens with red cherry, rose petals, violets, dried herbs, and subtle tea notes. The nose is layered yet refined, with a distinct floral signature typical of Case Basse.

The palate is taut, open, and energetic. Bright acidity adds tension and direction, while the mid-palate is carried by tart cherry, red currant, and a soft spiciness. The tannins are finely structured and silky. The finish is long, pure, and elegant, with a mineral undertone and a subtle floral echo.

The 2017 shows a harmonious combination of refinement and intensity and has the structure to evolve beautifully in the coming years.
