Description
Owner José Manuel Bento dos Santos, an industrial chemical engineer, has a strong love for northern Rhône wines. On a unique piece of landscape, 70km north of Lisbon, 15ha of vineyards are ORGANICALLY maintained to grow perfect grapes with an extremely low yield of 20-25hl per hectare. With the support of Grégory Viennos (former head winemaker at Chapoutier and Cos d' Estournel), exceptionally beautiful wines are produced that have now found their way into royal cellars and the best European and American restaurants.
Monte d'Oiro 'the golden hill' is a reference to the hill on the Quinta that takes on a beautiful golden glow when the sun shines over it. The winery is located in the Vinho Regional Lisboa appellation.
The Ex Aequo is a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Touriga Nacional which has matured for 18 months in 40% new French oak. This great wine is the result of a partnership between José Bento dos Santos, from Quinta do Monte d'Oiro, with Michel Chapoutier and is only made in the best years. It combines complex aromas of ripe fruit and a pronounced hint of licorice and shows ripeness and sobriety, with smoked notes, minerality, black pepper and cloves. Beautiful structure on the palate, but super refined with a remarkable freshness to promote breadth and aromatic complexity. An incredibly stylish and refined wine that can best remain quietly in the cellar for a few years. You will certainly be rewarded for this. This 2019 is the successor to the 2017.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose Collect in the Checkout page. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.

The 2017 Ex Aequo is a 75/25 blend of Syrah and Touriga Nacional aged for 16 to 20 months in 40% new French oak. It comes in at 13.2% alcohol. A big wine in this typically elegant portfolio, this seems bigger than it probably is. Chock-full of fruit, it projects depth in mouthfeel to go with flavor, character and structure. The tannins are moderate, particularly given the late release, but this always has some grip. Overall, it is actually rather elegant and balanced, just needing a little time. Francisco Bento dos Santos, of the family that owns the winery, compares it to the 2012. Most likely this won't show everything it has for another few years. They tend to age well, so there is no rush. Not imported, this runs around 60 euros in Portugal.
This is a producer gradually getting to the point of organic certification. Sophie Mrejen, who does the winery's marketing, says, "Our whites and rosé are certified organic, but our reds, because of the aging process in barrels, aren’t organic wines. . . . Deeper into it: all of our wines are made from our own grapes, which are 100% organic (our whole vineyard is certified since 2015)," but the barrel aging process means that some of the reds will exceed the sulfites limit for organic wines, so the individual red wines are not yet certified.

Tangy peppercorn with smoked meat, blackberries and incense. Quite peppery and spicy on the medium- to full-bodied palate, showing fresh, juicy fruit and creamy, polished, fine-grained tannins. Exciting tangy, fresh fruit and spiciness makes me want to refill the glass. Delicious now, but can keep holding.

This wine region in Portugal, about 50 kilometers north of Lisbon, has been known for its great terroir since the 17th century. In the 1980s, Quinta do Monte d'Oiro came into the hands of José Bento dos Santos, originally an industrial chemical engineer. He combines his passion for quality wine and gastronomy and has received many awards in both areas, both at home and abroad. The 20 hectares of vineyard are organically farmed. Naturally, local grape varieties have been planted such as Touriga Nacional and Arinto, but also the best global varieties such as Petit Verdot and Tempranillo (tinta roriz). The influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the limestone and clay soils give this area its unique terroir. Graça Gonçalves learned winemaking from her father, among others, and played a major role in the switch to organic production at Quinta do Monte d'Oiro.
