Description
Egon Müller's wines are a household name worldwide. The legendary reputation of this winery is mainly based on its noble sweet wines. These have an unprecedented storage potential and surpass many red wines. Legendary wines with world fame are those from: 1997 and 1999. The wines of Egon Müller-Scharzhof are so sought after that they fetch record prices every year at the wine auction in Trier and the rating of Parker and Suckling are often very close to the maximum 100 points. border on.
The total vineyard property covers 8 hectares, of which 7 hectares are owned in Scharzhof. The famous vineyard, Wiltinger Braune Kupp, is entirely owned by Egon Müller. The wines from this region bear the name 'Le Gallais.'
From 2000 onwards a changing of the guard took place. Stefan Fabian took over as cellar master from Horst Frank. Winemaking at Scharzhof is very traditional and minimalist, meaning that 100% of the quality is created in the vineyard. Minimal intervention is carried out in the cellar, so that the terroir can be fully expressed. Egon Müller's philosophy is still a resounding truth: quality originates in the vineyard and creates the finest wines.
The sunny 2018 vintage yielded perfect, fully ripe and dried grapes to produce beautiful, noble, sweet wines of all levels of quality. The biggest challenge was to maintain tension and a certain freshness despite all the generous, almost exuberant fruit. And this is exactly where legendary terroirs such as the Scharzhofberg come into their own.
97/100 Points Parker "...clear, intense and concentrated on the flinty and even rocky nose with its crunchy notes of broken slate and lemon juice. On the palate, this is a generous, highly elegant and refined, beautifully balanced and salty -crystalline Auslese..."

The 2018 Scharzhofberger Auslese (AP #8) is coolish, clear, intense and concentrated on the flinty and even rocky nose with its crunchy notes of broken slate and lemon juice. On the palate, this is a generous, highly elegant and refined, beautifully balanced and salty-crystalline Auslese with concentrated but detailed, elegant fruit, finely grained minerals and a long, complex finish. An impressive, great vin de terroir. Tasted in June 2019.

Egon Müller's 2017 Scharzhofberger Auslese (AP #7) offers fascinating crunchy, perfectly ripe, almost oily Riesling and dark slate aromas with some iron and herbal notes. This nose represents perfect ripeness, and that’s what you get on the palate: a lush, crystalline and flinty, mouthwateringly salty, fresh and piquant Riesling of great class, complexity and style. Gosh, this is a beautiful and seductive Scharzhofberger of which I wish I had a fuder in my cellar. Absolutely marvelous and a must-taste (or have). Tasted in June 2019.

Although this Saar Auslese is still a bit closed, it already shows sensational refinement and elegance. With aeration, the aromas of tropical flowers and fruits slowly emerge. The wine seemingly wraps its tendrils around you and pulls you into its seductive embrace. Better from 2019, but there's no rush. There's decades of aging potential here.

Egon Müller
Riesling Auslese Mosel Scharzhofberger 2017
A monumental auslese that focuses on freshness and minerality, rather than concentration and sweetness. This glides across the palate seamlessly, showing peach tart, ginger glaze and lemon curd flavors accented by thyme and spice. Well-structured and harmonious, but also with intense acidity for now. Elegantly framed on the super long, pure-tasting finish. Give this time to integrate. Best from 2021 through 2045. 12 cases imported.

From: Saar Riesling 2018: Beating the Heat (Jul 2020)
White peach and white currant in jellied form are wreathed in thyme and mint and accompanied by a whiff of raw mushroom on an enticing nose and a glossy, faintly oily palate. Prominent sweetness is checked by an influx of fresh citrus, along with mouthwatering salinity. The vibrantly persistent finish introduces nippy aspects of green herbs as well as of botrytis spice. Like its counterpart from the Braune Kupp, this will need time to reveal its full stature.

From: The Saar’s Deliciously Diverse 2017s (Oct 2019)
While this Auslese harbors marginally less acidity than its Spätlese counterpart, there is a blazingly bright, invigorating, almost severe sense of grapefruit, pineapple and lemon concentrates, along with piquancy of zests and seeds that engenders a near-indelible palate impression. The wine’s citricity is beautifully complemented by creamy-richness of texture as well as by flavors of quince preserves, white peach syrup and white raisin. A vibrantly sustained finish is at once invigoratingly tangy and envelopingly rich.
