Description
This 6.4 hectare domain on top terroir with Haut-Brion as its neighbor has made enormous strides in quality in recent years. The castle, renovated in a contemporary style by Patrice Pichet with winemaker Stéphande Derenoncourt, is considered among the top of Pessac-Léognan among insiders.
Colored a deep garnet purple, Les Carmes Haut-Brion diffuses an enticing array of savory scents - black olives, charcuterie and Sichuan pepper - over a core of bright red currant jelly, black cherry and cassis scents, plus fragrant hints of rose petals and candied mandarin peel. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegantly styled, but with a rock-solid backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins and very good freshness, finishing long and perfumed. This is a vintage with longevity potential and should age with fantastic grace.

Composed of 41% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was fermented using 40% whole clusters and aged for around 20 months in French oak barrels, 65% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple, it springs from the glass with fragrant notions of Black Forest cake, kirsch and black raspberries plus touches of cedar chest, red roses, black tea and dried mint. Medium bodied, the palate struts itself with great elegance and poise, featuring restrained, mineral-sparked red and black fruits with a firm, grainy texture and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

A tight and linear red with a firm and intense, pretty center palate of blackberry and wet-earth character. Full-bodied, reserved and focused. Really compacted

One of the real highlights of the vintage, the 2017 Les Carmes Haut-Brion possesses off the charts aromatic intensity and tremendous depth. An exotic mélange of sweet tobacco, menthol, rose petal, licorice, dried herbs and sweet dark fruit builds in a wine endowed with extraordinary beauty. Energetic and vibrant to the core, Les Carmes Haut-Brion was magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. Don't miss it.

Everything is special about this domain. It starts with the wine, which is highly sought after, but it also involves Philip Stark's incredible building. A highly innovative winemaker and a new vinification room since 2015 guarantee the vastly increased quality of this historic Chateau.
Guillaume Pouthier uses relatively many whole bunches and they undergo a long fermentation. The maturation in barrels, foeders and amphorae is also extremely long. Sometimes as long as 24 to 30 months. The Cabernet Franc character of Les Carmes Haut Brion is always evident, as is the characteristic low alcohol content. In recent years, this Chateau has been one of the top in Bordeaux.
