The Grand Vin of Calon Ségur reflects its terroir. It is rare, authentic, and deeply moving. In the most natural way, it reveals both great delicacy and exceptional intensity. All the magic of Calon lies in its balance. The wine is aged for 20 months in new oak barrels, where the tannins of the oak blend harmoniously with the tannins of the grapes over time. The style is brought by a Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses its finesse without arrogance. Elegance is evident throughout, in the purity of the wine's flavors, the delicacy of its texture, while its depth and length are also exquisite. The wine's extraordinary capacity for many years of bottle ageing is another hallmark of the estate. The 1947, 1953, and 1982 vintages, for example, still show astonishing signs of youth.

The soil consists of a thick layer of gravel, deposited during the Quaternary Period. Primarily, the subsoil is clay from the Tertiary. On top of the gravel deposits, there is also a fine layer of lacustrine clay. The area covers 55 ha (136 acres), of which 45 ha is planted.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Calon-Ségur has aromas of warm plums, blackcurrant, baked cherries and mulberries, earth, meat, and cedar, with hints of lavender and olive. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant, and intense with firm, fine-grained tannins and great length, finishing with a mineral finish. This wine was aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The blend consists of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.
