Started by the grandfather in the 1950s with the purchase of 1Ha of vineyard in Canale. Within a few decades, the Faccenda family developed into one of the most important wine producers in the Roero area. The choice of vineyards is therefore very deliberate: all six are located in Cru areas: Mompissano in Canale, Valmaggiore in Vezza d'Alba and Ginestra in Monforte d'Alba.
Cascina Chicco offers red, white and “metodo classico” wines, all of top quality: from the classic Roeros, including a red Roero, a white Roero Arneis, “Everybody's friend” Barbera and the “Nebbiolo” King Barolo. The renowned “Gambero Rosso” guide has already written several times full of praise about this promising winery.
The Cascina Chicco Barolo Rocche di Castelletto is without doubt the most viewed version of Cascina Chicco. A Barolo of extremely high quality at a great price. Of course this is a 100% Nebbiolo coming from the vineyards Ginestra and Castelletto South and Southeast oriented on calcareous soil. Area known for the best vineyards for Barolo.
In this vineyard the yield does not exceed 2 kg per vine. These also undergo a thinning in the beginning and the end of August. The harvest is done manually by specialized people, in 2 passes (difference of 6 to 10 days), with special attention to the selection of the grape bunches.
The fermentation takes place for 15 days in small stainless steel tanks, with repeated pumping over for better extraction of the color. The maceration continues for 40 to 45 days. This is followed by an aging of 30 months in wooden barrels of 2000, 2500 and 5000 liters (with malolactic fermentation), 12 months of refining in stainless steel and 8 months of aging in the bottle. This wine is marketed 4 years after the harvest. This is then ready to drink after decanting, but after a few years of bottle aging, the wine becomes even more elegant and the tannins melt.
On the nose, the Cascina Chicco Barolo Rocche di Castelletto is very elegant, with complex scents of raspberry jam, licorice and spicy notes. In the mouth, this Barolo manifests itself full-bodied, powerful and harmonious thanks to the round tannins that characterize the aftertaste. A great wine that goes well with main courses with roast and seasoned meat or with aged cheese.
Cascina Chicco is a nickname, but it is something more: it is the voice of generations past that whispers over the years, and today brings out the traditions and actions of its ancestors. For this reason, the owners have chosen to name the company Cascina Chicco because it connects us with the identity of the place where we were born and grew up. They chose it with respect for the past and with courage to look to the future.
The vines stretch from Canale to Castellinaldo, from Vezza d'Alba to Castagnito. Because the areas all contain different types of soil, the owners have researched which grapes suit which areas best. The winery uses the minimum amount of synthetic treatments possible and carries out regular analyzes to ensure the best quality grapes. The owners aim to communicate the strong support for sustainability through a new basement project. By installing the latest technology in 40kWp solar panels, they take advantage of the generous sunlight from the Roero to perfectly match the plants. The winery not only avoids fossil fuels, but also reduces CO2 emissions by about 30,000 kg per year through the use of solar panels.
