Persoonlijke gegevens
The La Rioja Alta 'Gran Reserva 904', like its predecessors, is vinified from 90% Tempranillo from vineyards over 40 years old in BriƱas, Labastida, and Villalba, and 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno. After the manual harvest and traditional vinification in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in a labor-intensive manner. It matured for over four years in American oak barriques produced on the estate. Since bottling, the wine has already been aging in the bottle for 5 years. Such a long aging period is unique for a wine in this price range! This Gran Reserva blend of Tempranillo and Graciano showcases the typical terroir of the region. Along with Vega Sicilia and Tondonia, it is one of the flagships among Spain's great traditional wines.
To produce the highest possible quality wine, only vintages with an exceptionally good harvest are used. The wine is made when the grapes have a high alcohol content, good color, and optimal aging potential. When the wine is ready for consumption, everything about it is perfect. This top Rioja has a very fine nose with notes of dried honey , clove, raisins , and wild heather blooming in the glass. The taste is medium-bodied with a hint of orange peel . It dances on the palate ; a memorable Rioja with style and panache . Delicious to drink now (just be sure to open the bottle an hour in advance), but it can also easily be aged for another 15 years.

I tased again the stellar 2016 Gran Reserva 904, which is nothing short of being spectacular and a textbook example of the grand traditional style. It was produced with 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from a selection of vineyards in search of balanced wines with silky tannins, good acidity, character, length and aging potential. The Ʃlevage is long, four years in used barrels that average 4.5 years of age, during which time the wine is manually racked every six months. It's ripe with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.61 and 5.4 grams of acidity, but the wine is super fresh and complex, with aromas of cigar box, dry tea leaves, balsam, aromatic herbs, camphor, antique furniture and tobacco. It's elegant and intense, with pungent flavors and very good freshness, and it's silky-textured and nicely structured, with volume, clean, intense and long. This is a very complete year for this wine. It's ready, but it should last; it hasn't really moved an inch from last year. 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021.
This Haro winery has 588 hectares of vineyards and only produces wines from their own grapes. They age their wines in 35,000 barrels, all 225-liter and made from American oak with an average age of four years. They produce an average of 1.5 million bottles per year, so they have the equivalent of eight years in stock between barrels and bottled wine. This year, they release their second Selección Especial from Viña Alberdi, the 2021 (the first was 2001). The range I tasted was very impressive and clean, in the more traditional style.

Such a deep and complex gran reserva with richness and depth. Genuinely intense and harmonious, with cigar box, pine cones, black mushrooms and high-grade wood and vanilla. Juicy, flavorful and really long. Goes on for a minute, if not more. Such a hedonistic Rioja that delivers sheer pleasure. 90% tempranillo and 10% graciano. Drink or hold.

From: The Diverse Villages of Rioja: A New Trend Emerges (May 2025)
The 2016 Gran Reserva 904 from Rioja Alta is composed of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. It aged for four years in American oak barrels, 20% of which were new. This has a slightly sun-kissed profile, opening with pronounced oaky aromas followed by classic tertiary notes of clove, licorice, vanilla and caramel, alongside hints of tobacco leaf and bay. This is complex in its maturity, offering good volume, creamy texture and a seamless flow across the palate. A touch of camphor appears at the finish, adding energy to the approachable character. The extended aging in oak defines the long, composed finale.

We write the year 1890. Five Basque winegrowers from the Rioja set up the 'Sociedad VinĆcola de la Rioja Alta' in Haro on 10 July, thereby laying the foundation for the production of high-quality wines. From the very beginning, it is done professionally.
The French oenologist Vigier, who at the time was considered the authority in the field of wine knowledge, is recruited as an expert. In the year 1891 the wine gets its final name 'La Rioja Alta'. It is the birth of a legend. It would take until 1941 for the first wine to be registered as a trademark. This was the famous ViƱa Ardanza, still one of the most important wines of the Bodega. In the past, all barrels were made in their own cooperage. After a longer break, that tradition was restored in 2002. The wood imported from America dries for two years before being processed into barrels. 1970 was an important year with a new barrel cellar, the expansion of the vineyards and the purchase of excellent plots. This also meant the birth of ViƱa Arana and ViƱa Alberdi. Today, the winery is one of the classics of the Rioja. Wines such as the 'Gran Reserva 890' and 'Gran Reserva 904' are unforgettable experiences. But the above mentioned reserves are also excellent wines for those who love matured wines and the traditional rioja style. A jewel among the venerable bodegas!
