The Bodegas Borsao Berola 2019 is a powerful yet refined red wine from Campo de Borja, in northeastern Spain. This blend of Garnacha and Syrah combines the sun-drenched ripeness of Aragon with surprising freshness and elegance. A wine that demonstrates how modern Spanish craftsmanship and authentic terroir can go hand in hand.

Origin & grapes

The 2019 Berola comes from select vineyards in the hills surrounding Borja, at an altitude of 600 to 700 meters. Here, the grapes benefit from warm days and cool nights, resulting in ripe fruit while retaining vibrant acidity. The blend consists of approximately 70% Garnacha and 30% Syrah , sourced from 35- to 60-year-old vines deeply rooted in poor, stony soils. This produces concentrated fruit and a wine with structure and depth.

Vinification & style

  • Fermentation: at controlled temperatures in stainless steel to preserve the fruit.
  • Maturation: 14 months in partly French and partly American oak, which provides complexity, softness and spicy nuances.
  • Style: full, warm and harmonious with ripe fruit, soft tannins and a refined wood note.

Tasting note – Bodegas Borsao Berola 2019

The nose reveals aromas of dark fruit like plums, blackberries, and cherries , complemented by notes of vanilla, cocoa, and a hint of bay leaf. The palate is rich and velvety smooth, with concentrated fruit, fine tannins, and a subtle oak spice. The finish is long, rounded, and elegant, with a beautiful balance between power and finesse. A wine with depth and a pleasure to drink.

Wine and food pairings

  • Meat dishes: grilled entrecote, lamb or game stew, or a spicy beef stew.
  • Mediterranean cuisine: lasagna, pasta with truffle or roasted vegetables with rosemary.
  • Cheeses: matured Manchego, old Gouda or Pecorino.
  • Special moment: also delicious as an evening wine with a good book or by the fireplace.

The Bodega Borsao was founded in 2001 and is located on the Campo de Borja vineyards. This Bodega is responsible for the spectacular progress of this area. The vineyard is in Moncayo and lies at an altitude of 400 to 700 meters, where the queen of the grape is planted: the Garnacha or Grenache which is able to survive perfectly in the harsh weather conditions of the area. The Tres Picos and Tres Lagunas are made from 100% Garnacha grapes that are harvested from very old vines. The vineyards are fairly cool at about 650 meters above sea level in Campo de Borja, south of the Rioja. Partly because of this, the grapes ripen slowly and gradually. An important condition for the production of complex and high quality wines. After fermentation, a short maturation follows on small oak casks. In taste, the wines are certainly the equal of a complex Châteuneuf-du-Pape, which is also mainly made from Grenache grapes. They easily win in price! The well-known American wine writer Robert Parker invariably scores 90 points or more. The Tres Picos is an internationally renowned wine. The Tres Lagunas is only imported by us to the Netherlands and is absolutely unique in terms of price / quality.
