The history of Biondi-Santi and the origins of Brunello

Biondi-Santi is one of Italy's most iconic wineries and is considered the founder of Brunello di Montalcino. The house began producing wines from Sangiovese Grosso, a clone selected on the family estate, in the 19th century. The wines quickly gained recognition for their ageing potential, precision, and a style distinct from other Tuscan wines. The estate is located just east of Montalcino, where altitude, ventilation, and chalky soils produce wines with tension, aromatic refinement, and remarkable longevity. The Riserva is produced only in the best vintages and is recognized worldwide as a benchmark wine.

Montalcino and the influence of climate and soil

The area around Montalcino boasts a unique microclimate. The hills offer significant elevation changes and a mix of soils ranging from limestone and marl to sand and clay. The Mediterranean influence ensures warm days, while cool nights slow ripening. This allows the Sangiovese to retain its vibrant acidity and intense aromatic profile. In this part of the region, where the Biondi-Santi vineyards are located, high-altitude plots dominate, providing freshness and structure. This terroir contributes to the longevity of the wines and gives the Riserva its characteristic precision and elegance.

The exceptional harvest of 2016

The 2016 vintage is widely considered one of the best of recent decades in Montalcino. Growing conditions were ideal, with even ripening, healthy grapes, and a perfect balance of sugar, acidity, and phenolic ripeness. The wines display depth, freshness, and a refined structure that perfectly complements the Biondi-Santi style. This was also the year the winery was acquired by a French group, a move that received considerable attention, although the style and philosophy remained unchanged and traditional.

Vinification and maturation of the Riserva

The Riserva is made exclusively from old Sangiovese Grosso vines selected on the estate. Fermentation is classic, with long skin maceration to develop structure and aromatic depth. The wine is aged extensively in large Slavonian oak barrels, where the wood influence remains subtle and the wine is given time to mature. The style is elegant, layered, and refined, with a structure that can develop over decades. The Riserva is only released in exceptional years, and 2016 is a prime example.

The 2016 Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

According to the tasting notes, the wine opens with a broad palette of aromas, including blueberry, wild cherry, and hints of violet and lilac. There are also spicy and slightly earthy nuances that gradually unfold. The tannins are refined, soft, and almost silky, with a perfectly balanced structure. The wine feels deep yet light on its feet, a hallmark of great Brunello. The 2016 Riserva is considered a collector's item that will only become more complex and profound with bottle aging. The optimal drinking period begins in 2028, but the wine has potential until at least 2060.

Colour, scent and taste of this Riserva

The color is ruby red with a light garnet rim. The aroma presents red forest fruit, floral notes, and subtle spices. The palate is elegant and precise, with a combination of fresh acidity, refined tannins, and a long, slightly salty finish. The texture is fine and harmonious, with layers that slowly open upon contact with air. This wine showcases the restrained yet impressive style that makes Biondi-Santi unique within the Brunello region.

Biondi Santi is one of the most outstanding producers of Brunello wine. Biondi Santi has been one of Tuscany's leading wine producers for over 150 years and is considered the "Founder of Brunello di Montalcino". Due to the microclimate and geological development of this area over the years, the hills around Montalcino are one of the oldest and most perfect areas of Italy to make beautiful quality wines.

In the 16th century Montalcino was already famous for their wonderful wines. However, Montalcino didn't get real fame until after the Brunello was made. This happened for the first time in 1888. The first Brunello wines were made by Ferruccio Biondi Santi. He has further developed the work of his grandfather Clemente Santi, one of the leading winemakers of the time. He developed a clone of the Sangiovese grape, called Sangiovese Grosso. This new grape was developed in the vineyard called "Greppo". Brunello wines from 1888 can still be found in the cellars of Biondi Santi. In September 1994, a large group of wine journalists were invited to taste the "old but beautifully matured" wines from the cellars of the domain. Even the Brunello from 1891 (103 years old) was rated with 10 points, the highest rating.
