The history of Vieux Château Certan
Vieux Château Certan is one of Pomerol's most prestigious estates. The winery boasts a centuries-old tradition dating back to the 18th century. Since 1924, it has been led by the Belgian Thienpont family, known for its dedication and long-standing involvement with some of Bordeaux's greatest names. Alexandre Thienpont and his son Guillaume have taken the estate to new heights by combining classic elegance with modern precision. This makes Vieux Château Certan a trusted name for sommeliers, wine consumers, and investors seeking absolute top quality.
The Pomerol region and its unique terroir
Pomerol is one of the smallest yet most celebrated appellations in Bordeaux. The terroir of Vieux Château Certan features a unique blend of clay and gravel, ideal for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The temperate maritime climate offers regular rainfall and warm summers, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. This combination gives the wines their characteristic depth, complexity, and aging potential, which are renowned worldwide.
Grapes and composition of the 2015 vintage
The 2015 Vieux Château Certan was produced from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. What's special about this year is that both grape varieties reached exceptionally high levels for the first time since 1983. This allowed the Thienpont family to create a wine that perfectly combines the round fruitiness of Merlot and the refined structure of Cabernet Franc. The alcohol content reached 14.6%, a record for the estate, highlighting the power and ripeness of this vintage.
Vinification and maturation of the wine
For the 2015 vinification, Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont opted for a more delicate approach. Shorter pump-overs were used, and the extraction was meticulously controlled, preserving the wine's elegance despite the rich concentration of the fruit. The wine was then aged in French oak barrels, adding depth and complexity without overpowering the purity of the fruit.
Color, odor and flavor profile
In the glass, the 2015 Vieux Château Certan displays a deep, inky color with purple reflections. The bouquet opens with aromas of blueberries, plums, lavender, and mint, complemented by spicy notes of licorice and a hint of menthol. On the palate, the wine is powerful, rich, and layered with spectacular texture. The flavors are opulent yet refined, with a perfect balance of ripe fruit, spice, and freshness. The long finish underscores the elegance and potential of this Pomerol.
Storage potential and investment
The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is considered one of the estate's most brilliant creations in recent decades. With a drinking window of 2030 to 2065, this is a wine that rewards patience. For investors, this vintage offers excellent prospects thanks to its rarity, high scores (97-100), and the winery's proven reputation. For sommeliers and wine enthusiasts, it's an essential addition to the cellar.

Blended of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan opens with profound notes of blueberry compote, dried mulberries, black forest cake, licorice, violets and garrigue with wafts of black truffles, sandalwood and rose hips. Medium to full-bodied, very earthy/savory and beautifully layered with very plush yet present tannins, it offers lovely freshness and a very long minerally finish. So very Pomerol!

From: 2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story... (Feb 2018)
The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, sumptuous and explosive in the glass, the 2015 is pure class. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous, spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, licorice and menthol all develop in the glass, but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today, it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No, there is not. This is a tremendous showing.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2017
Alexandre Thienpont and his son, Guillaume, made one of the most viscerally thrilling wines of the vintage in 2015. Because of the richness of the fruit, the Thienponts opted for shorter pumpovers than normal and a more gentle approach to extraction. Alexandre Thienpont told me 2015 was the first year since 1983 that the Merlots and Cabernet Francs were of a similarly high level. Alcohols came in at 14.6%, the highest recorded at the estate.

From: Bordeaux’s Radiant 2015s (Apr 2016)
One of the most exotic, flamboyant wines of the year, the 2015 Vieux Château Certan is rich, unctuous and seamless, with stunning depth and exceptional textural richness. In 2015, VCC is unusually deep and powerful. A host of rose petal, lavender, mint, spice and plum notes meld together, but it is the wine's overall intensity and spherical structure that stand out most. The 2015 is freakishly rich and likely to require at least 15 years to lose some of its baby fat. It was absolutely stellar on both occasions I tasted it.

Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaus in Pomerol. It was founded at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on Belleyme's 1785 map under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place name Certan is taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924 Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Covering an area of 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 23 plots, each managed separately according to the soil type, the grape variety planted and the age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and contain a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a gravel-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Taking into account the total area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem where the soil, vines and climate merge harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The Vieux Château Certan cellars optimally combine tradition with today's technicality and precision. The vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to ensure a gentle, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a much more elegant result.
Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
