Description
Pol Roger is known for producing a range of Champagne styles, including Brut, Extra Brut, Demi-Sec, and Rosé. They are particularly renowned for their high-quality, traditional Champagne production methods. The production process typically involves aging their Champagne for an extended period in their cellars, allowing the flavors to develop and mature. Pol Roger owns approximately 92 hectares of vineyards in the Champagne region, primarily located in the Vallée de la Marne, the Côte des Blancs, and the Montagne de Reims. Their full vineyard ownership allows them to control the quality of their grapes and maintain a high degree of consistency in their wines.
The Sir Winston Churchill Cuvée is one of Pol Roger's most prestigious and well-known champagne offerings. It was first introduced in 1984 as a tribute to British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, who was a great admirer of Pol Roger Champagne. Churchill was known to enjoy Pol Roger Champagne, and the house had a special bond with him. The Sir Winston Churchill Cuvée is produced in limited quantities and only in exceptional vintages. It is a high-quality vintage champagne, considered one of Pol Roger's finest. Typically a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it undergoes extended cellar aging to achieve the desired complexity and elegance. Pol Roger's commitment to quality, its historical significance, and its association with iconic figures like Sir Winston Churchill have contributed to its esteemed reputation in the world of champagne production. Their wines are often celebrated for their finesse and elegance, making them a popular choice among champagne enthusiasts and collectors.
The Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2015 opens in the glass with aromas of candied citrus, ripe tree fruits, and dried white flowers, complemented by notes of honeycomb, freshly baked bread, and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous, and concentrated, it boasts lively acidity, a chalky texture, and a fine mousse. This naturally rich, gourmet Champagne is initially quite closed but will develop beautifully with bottle aging. The style is reminiscent of a modern version of the 1985.

A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985.

Very complex nose with a wide spectrum of candied citrus, dried peach and mirabelle tart aromas. Bold and rich, particularly on the mid-palate, but with a great deal of subtlety and delicacy for the vintage. This is already delicious, but at the finish you really taste how this has been made for the long term. Great drive and persistence right at the end. Drink or hold.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged September 2022.
