Description
The history of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia and the Bolgheri wine region
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori, located on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri. Thanks to its unique terroir, influenced by the sea and a warm Mediterranean climate, the area has become a centre for high-quality wines. Since 2005, the estate has been managed by the Frescobaldi family. Their focus on precision and terroir expression has made Ornellaia an internationally renowned producer.
Wines from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia and their style
Ornellaia is known for powerful and balanced Bordeaux blends, often made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In addition to the iconic Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore, the estate produces Le Serre Nuove, Le Volte and Poggio alle Gazze. The wines are partly matured on French oak and are characterised by complexity, structure and long shelf life.
2014 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Magnum: grapes, harvest and vinification
The 2014 harvest was challenging due to a wet spring and a cool summer. Thanks to a dry and sunny September, the maturation was still completed well. The blend consists of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Franc. The grapes were harvested by hand and vinified separately per plot. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation in barriques. Maturation lasted 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new), with a further 12 months of bottle maturation before release.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2014 Ornellaia Magnum
The 2014 Ornellaia shows a deep ruby red color. On the nose aromas of black cherries, plums, balsamic, violets and a hint of toast. On the palate elegant and fresh, with silky tannins, layered fruit aromas and a mineral touch. The wine is less powerful than other vintages, but offers finesse, balance and a persistent, harmonious finish. The magnum packaging enhances the aging potential of this wine.
The 2014 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was given the name L'Essenza as part of the Vendemmia d'Artista art project, where each year an artist is invited to artistically interpret the character of the vintage. For the ninth edition in 2014, Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto was selected. Neto was inspired by his research into shamanism, natural phenomena and artisanal art forms that emerge from a sense of community. In collaboration with the Huni Kuin tribe in Brazil, he explored shamanic rituals and traditions, resulting in a work of art that emphasises the essence of nature and harmony within communities.

To be released in May 2017, the 2014 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia reverts to a style and personality that we have not seen in a long while. The wine shows a tight, silky and determined approach that reminds us of the Ornellaias made under the estate's previous ownership with the Marchese Lodovico Antinori in the mid-1990s. More than anything else, this has to do with the very unique characteristics of the 2014 growing season. The wine opens to a beautifully saturated and dark appearance. Thanks to the advanced age of the vines and their extensive root systems, fruit quality was well preserved despite the cool summer and late harvest. The wine shows sweet fruit nuances with blackberry and dark currant. Spice, leather and tobacco fill in the rear. The finish reveals just enough of that acidic prickle to assure an easy ten or fifteen year drinking window.
Under the steady management of lead winemaker Alex Heinz, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia has been tweaking its new white wine with very interesting results. In its first vintage to hit the market, the 2013 Ornellaia Bianco was 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Viognier (the clones were taken from neighbor Michele Satta). The cooler 2014 vintage showed very good results with Viognier, but despite this fact, the wine made in that vintage saw 15% Viognier and a small percentage of Petit Manseng for additional body weight. The 2015 vintage is all Sauvignon and the 2016 will be the same. Alex tells me that one day his hope is to add the local variety Vermentino to the Ornellaia Bianco blend.

A solid and structured red with tile, dark berry and black tea character and some cloves, too. Full body, tannic and rich. Needs time to soften. Well done for a 2014. Ornellaia shows its pedigree here. Better in 2019.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
