Description
The CLOS DES GOISSES 2014 VINTAGE comes from the most exceptional hillside vineyard in the Champagne region. The 2014 vintage is a blend of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay, disgorged with a dosage of 4.25 grams per liter. The 5.83-hectare vineyard, protected by walls (called a Clos), is one of the few "clos" in the region and the oldest and steepest in Champagne. It enjoys a perfect south-facing exposure on the best slope of Mareuil-sur-Ay. It is a truly exceptional terroir where the chalky rock lies very close to the surface. Clos des Goisses is the first clos and the first terroir to be vinified and blended separately. It is unique and instantly recognizable because of its extremely steep slope. The slope reaches an angle of 45°, hence the origin of the name: in the local dialect, "Goisses" means a very steep slope.
Partial vinification (64%) in wooden barrels results in greater complexity without premature oxidation. Malolactic fermentation is avoided, allowing the wine's natural acidity to offset the powerful character of the terroir. The wine remains on its lees (sur lie) for eight years in bottle, also known as a second fermentation or "prise de mousse," at a constant temperature of 12°C in the estate's historic cellars in Mareuil-sur-Ay. The very low dosage (4.25 g/liter) fully expresses the vinosity and minerality of this exceptional vineyard.
In the glass, the Philipponnat Clos des Goisses has a beautiful golden color with a lovely, persistent ring of very fine bubbles. The nose is initially very fresh and expressive, with notes of yellow fruit, mirabelle plum, and green apple, but with a gentle swirl in the glass, floral notes of vine and acacia blossom are released. The finish has a lightly toasted character. On the palate, this fine champagne is fruit-driven and intense, with an enveloping texture and notes of fresh fruit, honey, and linden. The finish displays a taut minerality and a pleasant salinity. Clos des Goisses is a very fine wine before it becomes a very fine champagne. It is a perfect and unforgettable pairing for strong-flavored dishes. In a few years, it pairs perfectly with fish or lobster and soft cheeses. Bottles often benefit from being decanted. This champagne has matured in the cellar for many years and is only released when it has reached its full maturity, but it can still be kept for decades and will continue to develop beautifully under the right conditions.

The 2014 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses, the latest rendition from this walled vineyard, reveals a fresh, energetic character with aromas of pear, peach, licorice, spices, white fruits, spring flowers and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and chiseled, this is a structured, tension-filled but ethereal Champagne with high acidity, sign of a cool-weather vintage. Although already thoroughly enjoyable, it should age well over the next 10 years. This is a blend of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay, disgorged with 4.25 grams per liter dosage.

This is showing elegant and complex aromas of pie crust, cinnamon rolls, spiced apples and hazelnuts. Hints of mocha and berry crumble. Very creamy bubbles on the palate, with caressing pastry elements married to bright acidity. There’s richness, but it’s sleek and fresh at the end. 71% pinot noir and 29% chardonnay. Disgorged March 2023. 4.5g/L dosage. Drink or hold.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
I tasted the 2014 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses from a bottle disgorged a la volée, in other words with no dosage and no sulfur added. At this very early and unfinished stage, the 2014 appears to be a linear, focused Champagne built more on persistence and focus than body, which is to say very much in the style of the year. Of course, much can change with dosage. It will be interesting to see how things end up. The blend is 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay, done 64% in oak, 36% in steel, with no malolactic fermentation in any of the lots.

I tasted a wide range of Champagnes, both new and old, with Charles Philipponnat and his son François recently. The flagship Clos des Goisses has long been one of Champagne’s most iconic wines. In recent years, though, I have been especially impressed with the entry-level offerings, wines that not too long ago were far less notable. Dosage is on the lower side for the top cuvées, which confers a feeling of vinous intensity and texture that runs throughout the range, the exception being the Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé, which is always an ethereal Rosé.

The history of the Philipponnat family in Champagne goes back to no less than 1697. In the centuries that followed, the family was active in making Champagne for many years. The traditional Champagne House Philipponnat was finally founded in 1910 by Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat. They managed to get hold of beautiful historic cellars, which originated in the 18th century. The house is located in Mareuil-sur-Ay, five kilometers east of Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne region.
The cool cellars are the perfect place for the Champagnes to mature on the yeast cells, giving the wine complexity and fine bubbles. Philipponnat wines undergo a bottle aging of at least two years, but usually even three years. In the case of the Millésimé, this period is even longer. The wine of the Clos des Goisses is even stored in the cellar for years, so that it can keep its fresh and complex character for years.
Philipponnat has a total of 17 hectares of vineyards, all with Grand Cru status. In addition, grapes are purchased from first-class producers in the area. We only work with suppliers who guarantee perfect quality grapes and with whom Philipponnat maintains a long-term relationship. The production is 500,000 bottles per year. The wines mainly use pinot – noir – grapes, which give the wines breadth and complexity.
