Description
Champagne Bollinger Winery
Champagne Bollinger is one of the great, classic Champagne houses and is known for a style characterized by structure, maturity, and precision. The house uses a high percentage of Pinot Noir, ferments some of its wines in oak, and ages them extensively on lees. The Cuvée RD stands for Récemment Dégorgé and demonstrates how Bollinger presents Champagne at the very moment when tension, freshness, and complexity converge.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The grapes for Bollinger Extra Brut RD 2008 are sourced from 18 villages in Champagne. Pinot Noir comes primarily from Aÿ and Verzenay, while Chardonnay is primarily sourced from Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. The 2008 vintage is considered one of the great, classic vintages of Champagne, with a cool growing season that resulted in high acidity, aromatic precision, and exceptional aging potential.
RD within the house
RD is an iconic cuvée within Bollinger and is only released after a very long aging on the lees, followed by a late disgorgement. Due to the low dosage and the timing of release, this wine displays maximum tension and energy. The style is distinctly gastronomic and demands attention at the table.
Vineyards
The selected vineyards are situated on chalky soils that provide structure and length. Pinot Noir forms the backbone of the wine, providing power and grip, while Chardonnay adds freshness and precision. The plots are selected for concentration and long aging.
Grape varieties and composition
The 2008 vintage blend consists of 71 percent Pinot Noir and 29 percent Chardonnay. Pinot Noir provides texture and an almost tannic structure, while Chardonnay adds tension and aromatic clarity.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness in a cool and balanced year. Vinification took place partly in small oak barrels, which contributes to texture and complexity. After the second fermentation, the wine matured extensively on lees in the Bollinger cellars. The dégorgement took place on October 28, 2022. The dosage is 3 grams per liter, resulting in a distinctly Extra Brut style with great precision. RD stands for Récemment Dégorgé, literally: recently degorged.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a bright golden yellow color with a fine, precise mousse. The nose is intense and layered, with aromas of apricot, dried pear, orange peel, and mandarin oil, complemented by hazelnut, brioche, and dried flowers. Subtle notes of chamomile, wet stone, and nutty accents add depth. On the palate, the wine is powerful and distinctly vinous, with a clear texture and an almost phenolic grip derived from the Pinot Noir. Fresh, salivating acidity keeps the whole taut and energetic, while the low dosage ensures a dry and very long finish.
Development and drinking window
Bollinger Extra Brut RD 2008 is still youthful and built for extended aging. Professional reviews suggest multiple drinking windows, ranging from 2025 to 2043 and from 2025 to 2045. The wine will continue to refine and deepen with further bottle aging.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate awarded the wine 98+ points, highlighting its harmony, youthful energy, and exceptional aging potential. Antonio Galloni of Vinous awarded it 96 points, praising the Pinot Noir's vinous structure, texture, and almost tannic grip, combined with fresh acidity and low dosage. Both reviewers consider this vintage one of the great RD releases of the decade.

When I was tasting Bollinger's brilliant Grande Année in this vintage, I was trying to imagine how good the 2008 Extra-Brut R. D. would be, as the style of the vintage seems almost perfectly adapted to this cuvée. Four years later, we have the answer, and the wine is brilliant. Disgorged in 2022, it's more reserved out of the gates than the dramatic Grande Année was on release, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, orange peel, freshly baked bread, subtle hints of fino sherry, wet stones and macadamia nut. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of fruit that's animated by racy acids and a refined pinpoint mousse, concluding with a bone-dry finish. Extremely harmonious and full of youthful energy, it's the finest R. D. of the decade and one that will richly reward a bit of additional age on cork. In style, the most obvious comparison is with the 1996, but the 2008 is more integrated and harmonious on release. These bottles were disgorged late last year with three grams per liter dosage.
The 2008 vintage was a great success for Bollinger, and I had been looking forward to tasting the R.D. for some time. Readers interested in more background on this cuvée, as well as tasting notes on older iterations back to 1955, are directed to my article published in the August 2022 Week 3 issue of The Wine Advocate, which delves into the origins of R.D., how it is made and its evolution over time.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
Bollinger’s 2008 R.D. is a powerful, vinous Champagne. Apricot, dried pear, tangerine oil, hazelnut, dried flowers, chamomile and brioche all race across the palate. The 2008 boasts notable depth and textural intensity, with a feeling of phenolic, almost tannin-driven grip from the Pinot that propels the finish.
At times the R.D. is quite exotic, even if there is a good kick of energy from the bright, salivating acids and low dosage. The 2008 R.D. is very much a Champagne for the dinner table, a wine that benefits immensely from aeration. In 2008, the blend comprises fruit from 18 villages, 71% Pinot Noir, mostly from Aÿ and Verzenay and 29% Chardonnay, mostly from Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. Dosage is 3 grams of dosage. I would give this a few more years in bottle to fully come together. Disgorged: October 28, 2022.

Since its foundation in 1829, the Champagne house Bollinger is located in Ay and family owned. The winery has 151 hectares of vineyards, mainly in Grand and Premier Cru areas. The uniqueness of these famous sparkling wines lies in the high standards of ethics and quality that the family has set for itself. These written principles dictate, for example, that the vinification of all wine takes place on the winery itself and is stored there on oak.
Both these high quality standards and the practice practiced to assemble only the best vintages from the best cultivation areas ensure the constant top quality of this Champagne, which Daniel Graig also prefers as a 007 agent.
The high quality requirements start at Bollinger in the vineyard. There is actually no second producer who selects the grapes so carefully at harvest, selects only the ripest grapes and consequently reduces the yield as Bollinger. The fact that people also know the literal side of champagne in this house is shown by the famous quote from Madame Bollinger, who answered the question when she prefers to drink champagne: “I drink champagne, when I am happy and when I am sad. I often drink it when I am alone; and if I have company, it should not be missed. When I'm not hungry I get hungry and when I'm hungry I let it taste good. Furthermore, I don't touch it unless I'm thirsty. ”

Een lichte bereidingswijze zoals kort gegrilde schaaldieren of een delicate kaasplankje met zachte kazen wordt extra benadrukt door de frisse en verfijnde stijl van deze champagne. |

So many dried-apple, grapefruit and buttery-croissant aromas follow through to a full body with density and richness, showing baking spices and pie crust. Turns fresh and vivid at the end with incredible acidity that contrasts the ripe fruit and electrifies your palate. 71% pinot noir and 29% chardonnay. Disgorged October 2024. Drink now.
