Description
The 2013 Percarlo is a wine of extraordinary finesse. Creamy and beautifully layered in the glass, we speak of the 2013 more about finesse and elegance than about the power and explosiveness that often characterize Sangiovese wines. The wine has a very dark and impenetrable appearance with soft aromas of blackberry jam, herbs and cherry liqueur. With time in the glass, the mid-palate becomes fuller and the flavors become more intense and darker. When young, Percarlo is somewhat tannic, but the gradual transition to larger barrels and casks has given the wine, among other things, much more texture and elegance and with some years in the bottle these tannins merge beautifully.

San Giusto a Rentennano, a name of Etruscan origin, overlooks the upper part of the Arbia River in the southernmost part of the Chianti Classico wine region. The estate began as a medieval monastery of Cistercian nuns and was known as San Giusto alle Monache ("of the Nuns"). In 1204 it was fortified by the Florentines, following a treaty that established it as their border with Siena. Only parts of the ancient fortifications remain, including the crenellated walls, the massive barbican and underground vaults, which are used today as the ageing cellars for our wines.
The medieval estate of San Giusto a Rentennano came into the Martini di Cigala family through marriage in 1914. In 1957 it was inherited by Enrico Martini di Cigala and in 1992 by his nine children. Today Anna, Lucia, Elisabetta, Francesco, Alessandro and Luca are partners in the family business.

A pure expression of Sangiovese, the 2013 Percarlo is a plump and succulent wine. To my palate, it shows almost too much ripeness, and this comes as a surprise given the moderate and often cooler conditions of the 2013 growing season. The wine shows a seriously dark and impenetrable appearance with soft aromas of blackberry jam, spice and cherry liqueur. The alcohol here is measured at 14% and you feel it all. Despite that very ripe fruit profile, the wine is undeniably well made and impeccably put together.

San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Key Points:
1. 100% Sangiovese from the estate’s best vineyards in Gaiole
2. A powerful, intense expression of Sangiovese
3. Remarkably consistent, even in lesser years
4. Aging potential: 20+ years

So much violet and flowers on the nose with dark fruits and wet earth. Full body, very structured and powerful with an intentional austerity forming the tannic backbone. A traditional and muscular red. Like a powerful Brunello. Fantastic strength. Needs another two or three years to soften.

A wine of extraordinary finesse, the 2013 Percarlo is utterly magnificent. Creamy and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2013 speaks to finesse more than the power and explosiveness that is often found here. With time in the glass, the mid-palate fleshes out and the flavors gain in intensity and darkness. When young, Percarlo is often forbiddingly tannic, but the gradual move towards larger format barrels and casks has, among other things, given the wine much more textural elegance. I can't wait to see how it ages. This is one of the most complete and strikingly beautiful wines of the vintage.
