Description
Salon S Le Mesnil is an iconic champagne from the famous Salon house, located in the prestigious Champagne region of France. The 2013 vintage has received high praise from wine enthusiasts and critics for its exceptional quality and unique characteristics. Here is an overview of this special champagne:
Vineyard and Terroir :
- Location : Salon S Le Mesnil is produced exclusively from Chardonnay grapes from the grand cru vineyards in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most respected vineyards in the Côte des Blancs.
- Terroir : The vineyards have an exceptional limestone soil that contributes to the freshness, minerality and elegance of the champagne.
Winemaking and Style :
- Vinification : Salon only produces champagne in exceptional years, and the wine is aged on the yeasts for a long time, which contributes to the complexity and depth of the wine. The 2013 vintage has undergone a long maturation period to reach its full potential.
- Dosage : The wine has a low dosage, which means that little sugar has been added to maintain the purity and expression of the terroir.
Tasting notes :
- Color : The 2013 Salon S Le Mesnil has a brilliant, light gold color with fine, persistent bubbles.
- Aromas : The bouquet is refined and complex, with aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit, green apple and nuances of roasted almonds, brioche and a touch of chalky minerality.
- Taste : On the palate the champagne is fresh and lively, with a perfect balance between acidity and ripe fruit notes. Flavors of citrus, white peach and pear are complemented by subtle hints of honey, toast and a distinctive mineral undertone. The texture is silky soft and elegant, with a long, refined aftertaste.
Reviews :
- International Wine Journalists : The 2013 vintage of Salon S Le Mesnil has received high scores from critics such as Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Decanter and Wine Spectator. Critics praise the champagne for its precision, elegance and aging potential.
- Recommended Drinking Period : Although this champagne is already excellent to drink, it will continue to develop and refine over the years. The 2013 vintage has an aging potential of at least 20 years, making it a valuable addition to any wine cellar.

2013 is a cool, late-ripening vintage in Champagne, defined by an October harvest in cool but sunny conditions. With a dosage of 5.5 grams per liter, the 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil possesses a complex, fruity bouquet mingling aromas of orchard fruit with notions of lemon oil, exotic fruits, spring flowers, almond and hints of menthol and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, rich and dense, with lively acids, it’s more complex and incisive than the 2002 and exhibits similar power to the 2012 at this early stage. Despite what was a challenging growing season for some producers, this is a superb Salon with a long, resonant finish.
Salon's just-released 2013 Blanc de Blancs derives from a challenging growing season that is emerging, at least with respect to the region's top cuvées, as one of the most underestimated vintages of the last 15 years. After a cold winter, budbreak was relatively late. The weather was rainy throughout the spring, followed by hail episodes in the Côte des Bar, in Vallée de la Marne and in Côte des Blancs, notably in Epernay. In mid-July, the weather turned hot, sunny and dry until early September. Unfortunately, the rains returned until the end of the month, causing damage and precipitating a virulent attack of gray rot (botrytis) in some locations. Harvest took place at the beginning of October. The houses that managed to contain the attacks of gray rot and to pick the grapes during the mild days of October succeeded in making excellent wines with a classic, chiseled profile that has become only too rare in the interim.

Beautiful and expressive nose of waxed lemons, chamomile, hazelnuts, sourdough, mango stones and hints of orange curd. It's linear and laser-sharp, with an elegant balance of minerality and touches of ripe yellow fruit, all held together by lively acidity and tiny bubbles. Sophisticated. Evolves to a dry chalkiness at the end. Long, textured finish. Disgorged end of 2022. Drink or hold.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
The 2013 is the most powerful, dense young Salon I have ever tasted. Champagne of mind-bending complexity, the 2013 possesses tremendous mid-palate intensity and power from the very first taste. Lemon confit, dried flowers, mint and a touch of brioche appear first, followed by light tropical accents that add an exotic flair. Imagine the sizzling energy of the 2008 and the persistence of 2004, with more mid-palate richness and riper fruit. Two-thousand thirteen was a cool, late ripening year. Harvest started at the beginning of October under sunny, dry days and cool nights, conditions that have not been seen since then. Readers will find a spectacular, modern Salon endowed with tremendous depth and very little of the youthful austerity that once defined Champagnes from cooler years here. The 5.5 grams per liter of dosage is perfectly judged. In a word: Magnificent.

The intention of Aimé Eugène Salon was to create a mythical wine from the beginning: one vintage, one plot, one cru and one grape from one village, namely Mesnil-sur-Oger. Only 37 millésimés were made in the 20th century. Five Millésimés have been created in the 21st century. Only the years 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 and the grandiose 2008 were worth being released on.
History of Salon
Salon is a Champagne producer based in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (Côte des Blancs, Champagne, France). It is known for producing some of the world's most exclusive and sought-after Champagnes. Founded in 1911 by Eugène-Aimé Salon, the house has a very distinctive focus on producing exceptional Blanc de Blancs Champagnes of one vintage, made exclusively from Chardonnay. Champagne Salon is the sister house of Delamotte, located a little further away. Both houses have the same director Didier Depond and cellar master Michel Fauconnet. In the 1920s and 1930s, this was the personal Champagne of the extremely wealthy Monsieur Salon. The Champagne was only served at his home, or in the Parisian eatery Maxim's, where he frequented.
Philosophy and production of Salon
Champagne enthusiast Aimé Salon initially created Champagne Salon just for himself and his closest friends. The grape variety he was going to use was only Chardonnay, from the Grand Cru Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger. The Vinification of course is the Méthode traditionnelle. The Salon does not undergo malolactic fermentation, remains on the lees for a very long time and receives a very small dosage. Salon has enormous maturing potential and is therefore an ideal champagne to keep and can mature for up to 40 years. Due to its limited production and high quality, Salon Champagne is usually quite expensive and difficult to find. It has built a reputation as a symbol of luxury and excellence in the world of Champagne, and is a preferred choice for special occasions and celebrations among those who appreciate the finest wines.
