Description
The 2012 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru is one of the most prestigious wines of Burgundy, coming from the famous Richebourg vineyard. This wine is known for its powerful expression, refined complexity and excellent ageing potential. It is one of the jewels of the collection of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC). The Richebourg vineyard is located in Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. It is a grand cru vineyard, one of the highest classifications in Burgundy.
On the nose, Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru has a refined and complex scent, with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, plum and floral notes such as violet. Subtle hints of spice, truffle, earth and a mineral core add depth. On the palate, the wine has a powerful structure with a remarkable balance between fruity sweetness, lively acidity and firm yet elegant tannins. Dark fruit flavours are supported by spicy and earthy nuances. The finish is long and intense, with a silky texture and a mineral freshness that emphasises the potential for further aging.
The Richebourg vineyard covers approximately 8 hectares, of which Domaine de la Romanée-Conti owns approximately 3.5 hectares. The vineyard has a chalky and clayey soil, ideal for Pinot Noir. The terroir gives the wine its powerful yet refined character. The slope and exposure provide optimal sunlight exposure and drainage. This wine has an exceptionally long life. Although impressive at a young age, it will continue to develop over the next 20 to 40 years. With age, the tannins soften and more secondary and tertiary aromas such as leather, tobacco and mushrooms emerge.
2012 was a challenging but very good vintage in Burgundy. The season was marked by difficult weather conditions: Hail, frost, and disease pressure severely limited yields. Due to these challenges, yields in 2012 were exceptionally low, resulting in a very concentrated and powerful wine. The grapes that were harvested were of high quality with a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. The scarcity and excellent quality make 2012 unique and highly sought after.

The Richebourg 2012 was picked September 27-28 at just 19 hectoliters per hectare, one of the lowest yields in this vintage. This has a serious bouquet, reserved at first, more earth than air. Unusual for this cuvee, there is a sense of exoticism here, a Richebourg daring to show a bit of ankle. Blackberry pastille intermingle with wilted violets, and there is a touch of warmth that belies the precocity of the growing season. Leaving it aside for 10 minutes, there are hints of Provençal herbs, broom and even fennel. The palate is medium-bodied and the first thing that strikes you is its backbone. Well, this is Richebourg after all. But there is an arching structure to this wine that is disguised by the silkiness of its texture, plus an almost citrus freshness and brightness on the finish. This is a Richebourg that will make you giddy with pleasure. 634 cases produced.

Vivid and towering in the glass, the 2012 Richebourg hits the palate with serious depth and overall intensity. Pomegranate, dark cherry, chalk, mint and wild flowers are front and center. Bright, primary and unbelievably intense, the 2012 is fascinating to taste today for educational purposes, but it will be many years before the wine is ready to give pleasure.

I was thrilled to be a part of the 11th Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival, held this past fall in Toronto. The weekend long program of seminars, tastings and dinners hosted by an incredible collection of luminaries from the worlds of wine and food helped raise $5.5m for the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine, one of the world’s leading research centers focused on stem cell research. These two smaller events within Grand Cru showcased the wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and brought in donations of $1m.

The 2012 Richebourg is fascinating to taste after the Romanée St.-Vivant because in this vintage their personalities appear to be inverted. The RSV is almost unapproachable, while the Richebourg is all about polish. Although naturally quite introverted at this stage, the Richebourg shows off marvelous density. Savory herbs, sweet tobacco and smoke add nuance on the creamy, voluptuous finish. The Richebourg tannins are there, but today they are nearly buried by the wine's incredibly deep fruit.

Aubert de Villaine compared the domaine's 2012s to the 1991s, when I tasted the finished wines with him at the estate in November 2014. To be sure, though, the 2012s have come a long way since they were bottled. A year ago, the wines showed a palpable sense of raw power from tiny yields and late malos. Today, the wines are much more polished. At this stage, the 2012s can be divided into two groups; wines that are intensely tannic (Corton, Grands-Échézeaux, Romanée St.-Vivant and Romanée-Conti), and others where the concentration of fruit stands out above all else (Échézeaux, Richebourg and, to a lesser extent, La Tâche).
