Description
This special cuvée is a tribute to Dom Thierry Ruinart, the Benedictine monk who inspired his cousin Nicolas Ruinart with his vision to found Maison Ruinart in 1729. Completely in line with the essence of the house, this valuable champagne is made from 100% Grand Cru chardonnay, for the 2009 vintage, 82% of the grapes come from the Côte des Blancs (mainly from Chouilly, Le Mesnil, Oger and Avize) and 18% from the north side of the Montagne de Reims (mainly from Sillery and Verzenay). This Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 2010 vintage brings with it a sense of seduction. The 2010 harvest year started with a cool spring, well below the long-term average, which delayed the cycle by up to 5 days. The summer was quite dry, there was about 25% less rain than average. However, in August the equivalent of 2 months of rainfall fell in heavy showers in a short time. In the humid heat, however, the Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes suffered more from the Botrytis cinerea fungus than the Chardonnay. September was a milder month and the quality of the grapes was guaranteed from the start of the harvest on September 15 to the end. The champagne has been cellared for 9 years and is bottled with an extra brut dosage of 4 gr/l. The strong flavors and intense freshness of this vintage combine very well with food. Think of Périgord pork fillet with nutmeg, Jerusalem artichoke and roasted chestnut shavings or leek – roasted, pureed, fried – with potato and truffle sabayon.
The top of Ruinart is the Dom Ruinart - The 2010 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs, the first vintage since the 1960s to feature tirage under natural cork instead of bottle caps and was disgorged in November 2021. The 2010 Dom Ruinart has an intense, chalky minerality and energy but also a richness in the mid-palate to balance the balance. Candied lemon, marzipan, white flowers, slate and white pepper are some of the many aromas and flavors that take shape in the glass. As good as 2010 is today, it will be even better in a few years. According to Antonio Galloni's 2023 review, the Dom Ruinart 2010 is one of the most impressive champagnes ever made here. He ends with: "If there is anything better, I don't think I have tasted it!" This version comes in a beautiful gift box

The first vintage since the 1960s to see tirage under natural cork in lieu of crown caps, the 2010 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs was disgorged in November 2021. It's showing nicely, over-performing for the vintage, displaying aromas of yellow orchard fruit, toasted nuts, spices, smoke, dried white flowers and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with impressive concentration and chalky structure, it concludes with a long, saline finish.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
The 2010 Dom Ruinart is starting to open up nicely. There's still plenty of the intense, chalky minerality and energy the wine showed last year, but also a bit more mid-palate richness to balance things out. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, slate and white pepper are some of the many aromas and flavors that take shape in the glass. As good as the 2010 is today, I imagine it will be even better in another few years' time. As I have written previously, the 2010 Dom Ruinart is one of the most impressive Champagnes ever made here. If there is anything better, I don't think I have tasted it!

Frédéric Panaïotis is one of the most articular Chef de Caves in Champagne. Since taking over in 2007, Panaïotis has produced a string of stellar Champagnes, including the 2010 Dom Ruinart, which I was able to revisit for this report. Readers will also want to check out the new Blanc Singulier, 100% Chardonnay bottled with no dosage meant to reflect the nature of Champagne today in the climate change era.

Ruinart is the oldest surviving champagne house. This house was already established in 1729. Today it is owned by the prestigious LVMH group. This group also owns Louis Vuitton and Möet & Chandon. Champagne house Ruinart has spectacular Gallo-Roman limestone quarries where the champagne ripens in the cool dark. Ruinart champagnes are elegant and harmonious. They have a very fine acidity and an unprecedented complexity.
