Omschrijving
In de recensie van Inside Bordeaux schrijft Jane Anson: "So much complexity but also so much lightness of touch, just love this wine and its lyricism. Winemaker César Perrin effortlessly handles a vintage that had plenty of challenges."
A wine to be kept for your retirement"

The 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is approximately 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Marked by scents of truffle and tree bark, great blackberry and black cherry fruit, plus accents of licorice and peppery spice, it's another in a line of terrific wines that have been made every year since 2009. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's velvety but tannic, with enough structure and intensity on the lingering finish to expect at least two decades of cellaring potential (but probably more).
On my last two visits to this large, historic property, I've been greeted by Cesar Perrin, who now manages all of the family's vineyards and supervises the winemaking at Château de Beaucastel. Other family members continue to be involved in the myriad wine-related business decisions, including participating in the annual blending process. The big news is that the new, state-of-the-art winery facility is inching closer to completion. Built largely of rammed earth from the site, and designed to have a big portion of the cooling load handled by ambient winds evaporating stored rainwater, it will set new standards in sustainability (assuming it all works the way it is supposed to). In the vineyards, experiments with various cover crop regimes rolled as mulch are taking place with a view toward slowing sugar accumulation in the grapes and reining in potential alcohol levels. The results are intriguing, with the 2021 samples I tried from barrel coming in 0.5% to 0.7% lower in finished alcohol and with slightly lower pHs compared to plots farmed more traditionally, yet they wines still exhibit dark fruit and supple tannins. "I don't want to change," explained Cesar, "but I'm afraid to have too much alcohol and too low acidity." Along similar lines, there's been a bit more use of open-top vats for fermentation, which can also bring down alcohol levels. Overall, the 2021s here have turned out very well, with Cesar calling it, "a nice vintage, in quantity and quality."

Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is approximately 60% Mourvèdre (from the same parcel, year after year), with the balance a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Ripe plums and truffle-like notes mark the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and rich, with a long, velvety finish. Showing even more complexity and length than the regular bottling, there's a chance this could reach a triple-digit score down the road.
Always one of the highlights of my visits in Chateaneuf du Pape, the cellars at Beaucastel were a bit dusty when I arrived, as the long-awaited expansion had just gotten underway. Built using the latest practices in sustainability and conservation, it's expected to be completed in 2024. The 2021 Syrah had just been picked, and the expectation was that the Grenache would be harvested beginning the following day. Something worth noting, although the family doesn't actively promote it, is that Beaucastel's farming has been certified organic since 1966, and the vineyards have been farmed along biodynamic principles since 1974 (although not certified as such).
Marc Perrin and his cousin César Perrin, who conducted the tasting, are high on the prospects for 2020, which they compare to 2016. "It was a beautiful summer, all the way through October," said César.
"What I really like is the finesse of it," said Marc. "With global warming, Mourvèdre is performing better and better here."
Their opinions aside, don't discount the bottled 2019s, which are also excellent. The 2019 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is simply stupendous, and not to be missed by serious collectors.
As always, my visit here included a substantial lineup of the Famille Perrin wines from other appellations, which will be included in the next installment of my Southern Rhône coverage.

The quality of the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is impossible to ignore, almost cruising at the same high altitude as the 2020. Aged in foudre and made from the usual blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The 2021 Hommage à Jacques Perrin displays fragrant violet, blackcurrant, red and black cherry, blueberry, thyme, lavender, licorice and mint aromas. Full-bodied, polished and enveloped in an intricate web of velvety tannins, it concludes with excellent persistence on the complex finish.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it pops from the glass with expressive notes of baked black plums, boysenberry preserves, and fruitcake, followed by hints of tar, black pepper, garrigue, and fragrant soil. The full-bodied palate delivers multilayered fruit with impressive grace, featuring fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with a peppery lift.

Elegant and subtle with a beautiful dark-shaded florality (in contrast to the white flowers of La Chapelle). Peonies. Violets. Rose petals. There’s a lovely raspberry fruited purity to this too. So precise and pure and fresh. Exquisite. Hommage à Jacques Perrin is often difficult to appreciate at this early stage but not here. So lithe and pure and tender, with great eloquence and clarity and beautifully svelte tannins. I love the return of the florality and the green tea leafy-ness on the finish.

One of the original big name French wines on the Place de Bordeaux, now joined by many others but still leading the pack in terms of prestige and quality. Juicy, powerful, seductive, a ton of spice, underbrush, red cherry, bilberry, cumin, toasted oak, incense, powerful liqoruice and cocoa. So much complexity but also so much lightness of touch, just love this wine and its lyricism. Winemaker César Perrin effortlessly handles a vintage that had plenty of challenges.

Very darkly coloured indeed. An extraordinarily deep and Mourvèdre-heavy fug of a scent; deep, but so fresh and searching. It's not overly full-bodied or heavy. Great surging acidity. It's tannic and will take a long time to soften, but promises great freshness and a long life - don't open too young. Around 60% of the blend comes from old-vine Mourvèdre from the Courrieux vineyard. Grapes are destemmed, fermented in tronconic wooden vats using natural yeasts after a brief cold maceration with regular punching down.

Fragrant summer berries and wild flowers on the nose. Rich and concentrated on the palate, not heavy or too weighty, the tannins remain sleek, fine and just supportive with the liquorice and toasted spice and red berry fruit doing most of the talking. It's maybe missing some extra depth on the mid palate, this is still direct and focussed, sleek and all in one line, but there's power, intensity and grip to the elements with a long finish. Feels a touch hot on the finish. 5% Counoise completes the blend.

Pure and intense cassis, blackcurrant nose – a leafy and earthy crushed blue-fruit note beneath. A supple palate with a herbal savoury note, thrilling fresh acidity throughout and fine restrained and dusty tannins. The energy throughout is superb – excellent concentration of crushed cassis, earthy spice, liquorice and a layered, extremely long finish. So much energy and purity in this wonderful wine.
