PREMI E RICONOSCIMENTI INTERNAZIONALI
2016 Bianco Fiagre (Campania)
Vinous 91 Ian d’Agata
Luminous yellow. The performed nose combines lemon, hazelnut, fresh herbs and vanilla. At once fresh and broad, but also chewy and dense;
strong, harmonious acidity and a saline quality nicely frame the smooth midpalate.
Plenty of stuffing here, but also very good sugar/acid/extract balance. Finishes with lovely length and lift.
2017 Bianco Fiagre (Campania)
James Suckling 94 pts
A layered and complex white, this is dense and dry with lots of dried fruit, such as lemons and mangos.
Full and flavorful. Long and intense. A real beauty. Drink now.
Vinous 91 pts
Bright straw. Aromas of pear and honey are complicated by botanical herbs. Enters rich and ripe, then turns brighter and fresher in the middle. Finishes spicy and delicately peppery, displaying a youthfully tannic quality. A blend of Fiano and Greco that offers clearly recognizable elements of both grape varieties (the vibrancy and herbal notes of cool-climate Fiano wines and the tannic nature and fruitiness of wines made with Greco). This strikes me as a very successful Fiagre, a wine I have never been particularly impressed by.
2018 Bianco Fiagre (Campania)
Vinous 91
Bright straw-yellow. Sappy aromas of fresh nectarine, peach and herbs. Ripe and lush, with a simple set of flavors similar to the aromas but plenty of texture.
Finishes with average length and good lemony cut.
2016 Fiano di Avellino Béchar
Vinous 91 Ian d’Agata
Light vivid yellow. Inviting, ripe aromas of yellow peach and vanilla custard cream are complicated by notes of lemon.
Fresh and fruit-driven; peach and saline flavors show outstanding complexity and good concentration. Finishes long and very bright.
I would like not have guessed this had the 13,5% alcohol reported on its label.
Wine Enthusiast 91 pts
Compelling aromas of pressed yellow flower, Mediterranean brush, citrus zest and smoke prove this wine’s Fiano pedigree.
The aromas carry over to the elegant structured palate along with yellow apple, lemon, toasted hazelnut and a drop of honey.
Fresh acidity provides balance.
2017 Fiano di Avellino Béchar
James Suckling 93 pts
Gorgeous aromas of pie crust, sliced lemons and dried pineapple follow through to a full body, round and layered fruit and an intense finish.
Shows intensity and beauty. Drink now.
Vinous 88 pts
Delicate golden-tinged straw. A whiff of wet cardboard reduction blows off with aeration; then very ripe apple and pear
aromas. Enters slightly overripe, even exotic and youthfully disjointed in the mouth, and less balanced than Caggiano’s
2017 Greco Devon. Boasts good underlying minerality to the custard cream, pear and aromatic spice flavors, but I wanted
more freshness. Finishes long and broad.
Wine Advocate 91 pts
The 2017 Fiano di Avellino Béchar does a terrific job of showcasing the grape and its territory. The wine (aged only in
stainless steel) shows a finely knit texture with balanced aromas of pear, white peach and Golden Delicious apple. The
bouquet is distinguished by the intensity and the varietal purity of its aromas. This was a hot and dry vintage that seems to
have squeezed out the grape’s fruity aromas, down to the very last drop.
Wine Spectator 88 pts
This light-bodied, zesty white offers a stony underpinning and lively acidity, with a well-knit mix of Asian pear, chamomile and green almond notes.
Drink now through 2021.
2018 Fiano di Avellino Béchar
Vinous 89 pts
Luminous straw-green. Perfumed and varietally accurate aromas of lemon verbena, minerals and green apple.
Well-delineated and penetrating on entry, then a little softer and subdued in the middle, with high but harmonious acidity giving spine to the stone fruit and citrus flavors.
Best today on the classic nose, this medium-long Fiano should ideally be drunk up early.
2016 Greco di Tufo Devon
Vinous 89 Ian d’Agata
Dark yellow. Clean, fresh pineapple, nectarine and herb aromas and flavors. Rich, dense and tannic on entry, but finishes a little tart and simple,
revealing spicy pepper nuances and a hint of residual sugar. Sports a lowish 13% alcohol for Greco, but the wine’s overall balance benefits.
2017 Greco di Tufo Devon
James Suckling 93 pts
Sliced pear and apple aromas follow through to a medium body with bitter-lemon and green-apple flavors. Slightly oily. Drink now.
Vinous 92 pts
Bright straw-yellow. Fresh aromas of lime, pomaceous orchard fruit and minty herbs. Then multilayered and vibrant,
offering lively, juicy flavors of tropical fruits, aromatic spices, orange nectar and pear. A bright, precise wine boasting very
good juiciness that lingers nicely on the aftertaste. Much more successful and accurate than the 2017 FianoBechar by
Caggiano, which is not surprising, as all across Campania, Greco fared much better in 2017’s heat than did Fiano.
Wine Advocate 90 pts
The 2017 Greco di Tufo Devon bursts forth from the glass with bright layers of sweet grapefruit, pear, peach and honeydew
melon. There is a tight mineral component at the back that renders sensations of focus and sharpness. This is a lean-bodied
wine that keep those taste buds refreshed and energized.
Wine Spectator 87 pts
Pretty notes of apple blossom and spring herb draw you into the glass of this light-bodied, lithe white, with flavors of nectarine, stone and Asian pear. Drink now.
2018 Greco di Tufo Devon
Vinous 89 pts
Good full yellow. Clean aromas of musky orchard fruit and wild herbs plus a hint of bacon fat. Supple and savory but not especially deep,
offering suave, nuanced inner-mouth floral lift and light fruit flavors on the medium-long, chewy finish.
2013 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti
Vinous 92 Ian d’Agata
Good full ruby. Bright, complex aromas of red and black fruit complemented by sweet spices, minerals and tobacco.
Then dense, sweet and fruity, showcasing balanced, lively red cherry, cocoa, coffee and cinnamon flavors.
A fresh note of strawberry emerges on the long, multilayered finish. The 2013 vintage was not especially easy in the Taurasi area,
since there was a bit more rain than growers might have liked, but this is really lovely wine that will age well.
2014 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti
James Suckling 93 pts
The tar and asphalt character is intense here. Black pepper, too. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a firm and silky finish.
Creamy texture. Drink now.
Wine Advocate 93 pts
This is one of the benchmark wines for the Taurasi appellation in Campania, Southern Italy. The 2014 Taurasi Vigna Macchia
dei Goti is supple and soft but also dense and firm. This wine shows the power and the natural structure of those
celebrated Aglianico tannins. You also get fresh acidity and a plethora of ripe fruit flavors with blackberry, ripe cherry and
dried currant. The finish is dry and slightly astringent with sour cherry flavors. It ages in barrique for 16 months.
Wine Enthusiast 89 pts
Aromas of game, wild herb, mature black-skinned fruit and a whiff of barnyard follow over to the dense, extracted palate along with prune and licorice.
It’s on the funky, overripe side, with a velvety texture that gives way to a dusty, drying finish.
Drink sooner rather than later to capture the remaining fruit flavors and freshness.
2015 Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti
Wine Spectator 93 pts
Hints of eucalyptus and spice form an aromatic thread that winds through the ripe and juicy black cherry and mulberry fruit of this muscular,
full-bodied red, defined by sculpted tannins and mouthwatering acidity. Finely knit, with a long, grippy finish of hot stone and smoke notes.
Best from 2021 through 2029.
Vinous 94+ pts
Fully saturated, opaque purple-ruby. Very raw and very primal aromas and flavors of dark plums, spicy cocoa, blackberry nectar, flint and candied black cherry.
Concentrated and dense, and smooth and luscious already. The flinty cherry, cocoa and sweet spices return on the long, vibrant, very rich finish. A baby, but very promising.
2016 Aglianico Irpinia Taurì
Vinous 91 Ian d’Agata
Bright ruby-red. Musky aromas of raspberry, flint, leather and tobacco. Fresh, broad and lush, presenting very forward, appealing flinty red fruit flavors.
An easygoing wine with a low-acid impression that is smooth and balanced. Finishes with soft tannins and a hint of pepper.
2017 Aglianico Irpinia Taurì
James Suckling 92 pts
This is really bright and beautiful with black-pepper and dark-berry character. Medium body, fine tannins and a pretty finish. A gorgeous young aglianico. Drink now.
Wine Enthusiast 88 pts
Aromas of dark-skinned fruit, new leather and scorched earth lead the nose. The medium-bodied palate offers black plum,
star anise and a hint of orange peel alongside smooth tannins. Drink soon.
Vinous 92 pts
Good full ruby. Complex, fruity, smoky nuances (dark plum, ripe black cherry and minerals). Rich, dense and layered,
offering hints of milk chocolate and hazelnut that complement the spicy red and blue fruit flavors on the very long, peppery
finish. This is really outstanding and offers lots of wine for the money.
Wine Advocate 86 pts
This wine shows the heat and dryness of the vintage with candied cherry and jammy blackberry aromas. In fact, the ripeness
is a little too much, and the wine lacks balance as a result. But if you have a sweet tooth, the 2017 Irpinia Aglianico Taurì
is for you.
2018 Aglianico Irpinia Taurì
Vinous 91 pts
Saturated ruby. Graphite, licorice, tar and woodsy underbrush complicate sour red cherry aromas and flavors.
Much more elegant but also more austere and less fruity than the other two Aglianicos released by Caggiano this year.
Is there enough fruit here to stand up to the tannins over time? Finishes long and serious.
I’d cellar for another two years but would drink up over three or four years after that.
2016 Falanghina Campania
Vinous 90 Ian d’Agata
Straw-yellow. Clean, fresh tropical fruit notes on the nose and in the mouth are lifted by bright acidity and flowers.
Finishes long and very saline, delivering noteworthy acid cut.
Wine Enthusiast 88 pts
Delicately scented, this offers aromas of Spanish broom, Mediterranean scrub and yellow stone fruit.
On the medium-bodied palate, tangy acidity supports mature yellow apple, lemon zest and a hint of toasted hazelnut.
2017 Falanghina Campania
James Suckling 92 pts
Lots of peach-skin and pear aromas follow through to a full body, very bitter yet intriguing flavors and a long and intense finish.
Quite oily, too. Unique Falanghina. Drink now.
Wine Advocate 88+ pts
The 2017 Falanghina is a wine that is fresh and easy-drinking. One thing it is not is banal. This is a different and exciting
expression of this popular Southern Italian white grape that offers subtle tones of peach, honeydew melon and a touch of
natural rubber. There is some piquant spice on the close, that with the natural acidity you get here, does much to revive
and refresh the palate.
Wine Spectator 87 pts
This light-bodied white is crisp and stony, with subtle notes of ripe green pear, delicate herb and verbena. Drink now.
2018 Falanghina Campania
Vinous 87 pts
Pale bright yellow. The sexy, forward nose combines exotic tropical fruits, tangerine, banana and musk.
Flavors similar to the aromas on the smooth, simple mouthfeel. Closes medium-long and bright.
2015 Irpinia Aglianico Sale Domini (Campi Taurasini)
Vinous 92 pts
Dark ruby-red. Clean, ripe aromas of red cherry and medicinal herbs. Then flinty, smooth flavors of cherry, strawberry and
tobacco. Finishes suave and long, with a hint of smoke. This is another easy-to-drink and easy-to-like red from Caggiano in
The label says 14% alcohol, but this is so well balanced, I really couldn’t tell.
Wine Enthusiast 90 pts
Enticing aromas of violet, red berry and clove lead the nose while the vibrant palate offers raspberry jam, star anise and
black pepper. Fine-grained tannins support the savory flavors.
2017 Irpinia Aglianico Sale Domini (Campi Taurasini)
Vinous 91+ pts
Saturated ruby. Graphite, licorice, tar and woodsy underbrush complicate sour red cherry aromas and flavors.
Much more elegant but also more austere and less fruity than the other two Aglianicos released by Caggiano this year.
