Joseph Drouhin was een gedurfde en ondernemende jongeman die afkomstig was uit de regio Chablis. In 1880, op 22-jarige leeftijd, vestigde hij zich in Beaune en richtte daar zijn eigen wijnbedrijf op. Zijn doel was om wijnen van hoge kwaliteit aan te bieden die zijn naam zouden dragen. Met bijna 90 verschillende appellaties biedt Joseph Drouhin een fascinerende reeks Bourgondische terroirs in al hun authenticiteit en subtiele variaties. Joseph Drouhin heeft de biologische en biodynamische benadering aangenomen. In de wijngaarden worden alleen natuurlijke producten gebruikt en alle procedures tonen het grootste respect voor de bodem, de wijnstok en het milieu. De stijl van Joseph Drouhin is een alliantie tussen karakter, balans en harmonie. Wijnen die bedoeld zijn om jong gedronken te worden, zijn fris en subtiel; wijnen die bedoeld zijn om te behouden, krijgen met de jaren een weelderige complexiteit.
De Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 is afkomstig van op het oosten gerichte wijngaarden in de Les Languettes, een kleine productie van zes vaten. Het heeft een gesloten en eigenwijs achterwaarts boeket dat wordt overvleugeld door de Clos des Mouches Blanc. De stevige smaak levert een goede zuurgraad en tonen van sinaasappelschil en lichte perziktonen, vrij puur, en een kruidige ziltige gember afdronk.

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is excellent, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet citrus oil, beeswax, white flowers and oyster shell. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and satiny on the attack, with considerable concentration and structuring dry extract, succulent underlying acids and a long, chalky finish. From the south-facing climat Les Languettes, this is one of the highlights of Drouhin's 2017 portfolio.
This important house—and, with fully 73 hectares of its own vines, domaine—has produced a lovely range of quintessentially elegant wines in the 2017 vintage. With the reds, particular brilliance emerges from Chambolle-Musigny, and the whites are successful across the board, exemplifying the succulent, tender house, an aesthetic deeply in sync with the inherent profile of the vintage. Véronique Drouhin, with whom I tasted this year, briefly summarizes the growing season and the wines it yielded as "early, warm, sunny, dry and charming"—an account that is hardly necessary to embellish. Readers will likely have noted that the Drouhin team are using increasingly large percentages of whole clusters this year, something that the wines—with the sole exception of a slightly carbonic Clos de Bèze—integrate very well.

Very attractive wet stones and a wealth of hazelnuts and ripe, fresh and expressive lemons and white peaches. The palate has beautifully complete, fleshy texture, really seamless and underpinned by stony, powerful terroir-driven structure. Exceptional Corton-Charlemagne here. Drink or hold.

From: 2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)
The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from east-facing vineyards within the Les Languettes, a small production of six barrels. It has a closed and stubbornly backward bouquet that is outflanked by the Clos des Mouches Blanc. The tensile palate delivers good acidity and notes of orange zest and light peach notes, quite pure, and a spicy stem ginger and salty peanut finish. Very fine.

Drouhin’s 2018s were tasted at a private tasting in London rather than Burgundy. This tasting is for professionals only, quiet and I can take my time, Véronique Drouhin on hand as usual to guide me through almost the complete portfolio from Village Crus that are often tremendous value-for-money, to the sought-after Grand Crus. Drouhin offered her own perspective on the 2018s: "It was a mild winter followed by rain," she began. "The beginning was cold and things did not start quickly. Budbreak was the beginning of April, then it became warm and the vines growth exploded so that in a couple of days there were five or six leaves. Flowering was 19 May, not particular early, then it was dry with sunlight and wind, so the vines grew very well. Véraison was mid-July, so we knew we would have an early vintage. August was extremely dry and we had no issues with botrytis or mildew. In 2018 is a very good vintage with good quantity, not huge. Harvest began on 29 August and finished around 6 September, so it was a condensed harvest, which meant long days in the vineyard. There was remarkable phenolic maturity so the alcohol is on the higher side, which is not ideal for Pinot Noir, but it is what it is. It was good for whole cluster. Primary fermentation for the whites was slow as the yeasts struggled with alcohol, so some alcohol levels are around 14%. There was remarkable quality of the lees. When we did the debourbage we included a lot of the lees in the barrels. Every sample shown here is the final blend. We did almost no lees-stirring as we did not want the whites to be too big and to respect the vintage. For the reds we did less pigeage this year to moderate the extraction."
