Comtes Lafon is een hoog aangeschreven wijnproducent die bekend staat om het produceren van uitzonderlijke wijnen in de Bourgogne (Frankrijk). Dominique Lafon, de eigenaar en wijnmaker, is een gerespecteerd figuur in de wereld van de wijn. Comtes Lafon heeft een rijke geschiedenis die meerdere generaties teruggaat. Het landgoed werd gesticht in het begin van de 19e eeuw en Dominique Lafon heeft de wijntraditie van de familie met groot succes voortgezet. Het wijnhuis is gelegen in het dorp Meursault, gelegen in de subregio CĂŽte de Beaune van de Bourgogne.
Ook deze Volnay bereikt net als de Santenots van Comtes Lafon een eenzaam hoogte. De andere bodemstructuur geeft de druiven in de Clos des ChĂȘnes meer dikte en wat meer vettigheid. De elegantie en de verfijnde houttonen zijn vergelijkbaar met die van de Santenots.
Van de 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des ChĂȘnes, zijn slecht tweeĂ«nhalve vaten gemaakt, dus zeker een collector's item. De Volany heeft een strak boeket vanpruim en braam. Het palet is medium-bodied met sappige rijpe zwarte bessen en cassis tonen, en een zeer goede diepte met elegante tannines. Een zeer 'waardige nobele' wijn.

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des ChĂȘnes, of which there are two and a half barrels, has a straitlaced black plum and blackberry bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe blackcurrant and cassis notes, very good depth here, and then surfacing on the finish with elegant and quite tensile tannins. This is a well-crafted, strict Clos des ChĂȘnes that might be overshadowed by the Champans, but is still a worthy wine.
Dominique Lafon was in a positive mood about his 2013s, but there was one thing that bugged himâŠthe late malolactics. So I was glad to have left my visit until the latter stages of my Burgundy tasting âmarathonâ for had it been a month earlier, many would have been in no fit state to taste. In fact, Dominique transferred the wine into stainless steel tank upstairs so he could get the malo going, before transferring them back downstairs into the barrel cellar. Like everyone else, the main reason for the depletion in quantity is not the hail, which only affected his Volnay wines, but the prolonged flowering that impacted upon the old vines in particular. âIt was wet in the spring,â Dominique rued, finishing his 469th cigarette of the day, âbut the disease pressure was nothing compared to 2012. It was a season that started difficult but ended up nicely.â He started picking on September 25 with the Meursault BouchĂšres and the PerriĂšres until October 3, when he unsheathed the secateurs to pick the Montrachet; the reds picked October 4-9. I asked Dominique if he would compare it to any other recent vintage. âItâs a lean vintage for the whites,â he answered, âso the best wines sometimes make me think of 2010 in terms of the pH and acidity at this stage.â Like the 2010s, he feels that they may surprise a lot of people once they are in bottle. Needless to say that his 2013s are not short in quality and readers should not overlook the reds, in particular a standout Volnay Champans, de facto one of the finest that I tasted from the appellation (though Dominique opined his Santenots will ultimately overtake it.) The whites are generally top-notch, especially the Meursault Porusots, a Meursault PerriĂšres that delivers the mineralitĂ© missing from other growersâ examples, and of course, a Montrachet that Dominique quipped sported a âCoche-likeâ reduction. A couple of the Meursault did not appear to be bridled with the same level of complexity as others, but this was a season that favored some vineyards over others and should be expected and indeed, embraced.

From: The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)
(as with the Santenots and Champans, the yield here was just 15 hectoliters per hectare, according to Lafon): Healthy medium red. Subtle flavors of kirsch, licorice, minerals and violet are given lift and definition by brisk acidity. Supple but sappy wine with firm but fine-grained tannins and a strong finishing note of licorice. A lovely showing.

Dominique Lafon told me that his Volnay vineyards were much less affected by hail in 2013 than in 2014; in fact, he said, 2012 was the most hailed-on vintage of the trio. Lafon uses one-third new oak for his red premier crus and has bottled all of the Domaine Lafon wines, whites as well as reds, with the top-of-the-line DIAM 30 corks since 2013 (he uses DIAM 10s for his MĂąconnais wines). While he does not believe that his 2014 reds will close down, heâs not as sure about these 2013s, which are very concentrated wines made from tiny crop levels.

Geschiedenis van Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon werd oorspronkelijk opgericht door Jules Joseph BarthĂ©lĂ©my Lafon, geboren in 1864. Hij trouwde in januari 1894 met Marie Boch, wiens familie al wijnhandelaren en landgoedeigenaren was in Meursault. Productie van Comtes Lafon
Dominique Lafon is een voorstander van biodynamische landbouwpraktijken, waarbij duurzaamheid en de gezondheid van het ecosysteem van de wijngaard voorop staan.
