Giannikos Winery - Plaimont
Producers Plaimont is the locomotive of the Sud-Ouest and one of the most innovative wine companies in all of France. With 1000 affiliated vignerons, approximately 5,250 hectares of vineyard and a production of approximately 385,000 hectoliters, Producteurs Plaimont is the largest player in the Sud-Ouest.
The company was born in 1979 from the collaboration of three cellars in the Gers: Plaisance, Aignan and Saint-Mont. The caves of Condom and Cazaubon also joined in 1999. The three original cellars produced almost exclusively bulk wines until the 1970s, but the newly created Plaimont opted for quality and for the reconstruction of the vineyard with traditional Gascon grape varieties such as pinenc, arrufiac and petit courbu. This was accompanied by demanding cultivation methods, such as green picking and harvesting by hand, quality control and traceability. The plantings today consist of tannat, pinenc, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon for red and rosé; arrufiac, petit courbu, petit en gros manseng, colombard, ugni blanc and listan for white. Plaimont has a quasi-monopoly on the production of an unadulterated terroir wine Saint Mont. In addition, it produces equally characteristic AOCs such as Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. The largest volume consists of modern vin de pays wines from Gascony. With this varied range, both novice consumers and advanced consumers can be provided with a tailor-made service. Half of the production is exported. Plaimont annually spends 5 to 10% of its turnover on investments. This already happened at an early stage for techniques such as micro-oxygenation for red (softening of tannins by means of oxygen) and pellicular macération for white (peel maceration). Plaimont also has 19,000 m2 of air-conditioned business premises. In addition to technical matters, Plaimont also invests in matters such as wine tourism, marketing and training.
