Description
This 10 Years Old Tawny Port by Quinta do Noval is a true quality sport with its waning red color! The beautiful color is created by the 10-year maturation in wooden barrels. Various indigenous grape varieties such as touriga nacional, touriga francesca, tinta barroca were used for this port. Fermentation took place in large traditional stone fermentation vessels.
The scent of this 10 Years Old Tawny Port offers nuances of dried plums and raisins and has a pleasant woody tone. The taste experience can be called velvety soft and haunting with notes of ripe fruit, raisins, humus, cocoa, leather and tobacco. This fantastic port it is a masterpiece by the cellar master of Noval. A very good port, quality from Portugal, hence the justified Parker rating of 91 points.
Port is a special wine in all respects. The method of preparation is absolutely unique. The fermentation of the grapes only lasts until there is sufficient unfermented sugar for the taste. Wine alcohol is then added up to a level of around 20 degrees. The fermentation stops abruptly, the young port wine is born. It is just like port wine with port wine; there are simple basic wines and there are "Grands Crus". The Quinta do Noval port house is such a Grand Cru on the Douro and Pinhão rivers where the soil consists of slate and granite.
Excellent for many moments of enjoyment: great with chocolate, almonds, walnuts and beautiful rich cheeses. Serve cool. Delicious with old cheeses.

The NV 10 Year Old Tawny was bottled in 2016 with a bar-top cork and 106 grams per liter of residual sugar. Medium in body--well, it's a 10, not a 40--this has fine freshness and perfect balance. The juicy, delicious finish is irresistible and has more intensity of flavor than most 10 Year Olds. Although I tend to look first for freshness in this category, it is also nice to find some complexity and intensity of flavor, too, as here. This is nicely done. This showed way better at 58 degrees Fahrenheit than it did at 70.
The last time I saw Noval's age-indicated tawnies, I was very impressed. Nothing has changed my mind. These are among my favorites—concentrated, classic and focused. The longer they sit in barrel, the longer they can be held, but wines with bar-top corks are not meant to be held, so dive in. They certainly don't need to be aged. Remember also: no aged tawny should be drunk anywhere near room temperature. Take it out of the fridge and let it warm in the glass. Try it at different places. See what you like best. Most would suggest that 58-62 degrees Fahrenheit will be the sweet spot, depending on the wine and your taste. Finally, the others are pretty fine, too. For a young Colheita, that 2003 has a lot of pop and concentration.

Quinta do Noval is located in the north of Portugal and is located in the Douro Valley. A breathtaking area due to the untouched nature. The vineyards are situated on steep slopes near the Douro River. Quinta do Noval has been producing port of remarkably good quality since the early 1700s. The port and winery has a large cellar carved in the mountains where the vineyards are also located. In this cellar, the port is aged in a barrel. The port is also bottled and shipped from this region. Under the inspiring leadership of its current owner, Christian Seely, a number of years ago were invested heavily in a new winery and an intensive vine replanting program. This allowed new developments to be combined with the old traditions that made Noval great. Quinta do Noval is well known for the Nacional Vintage port which is the rarest and most sought after port in the world. Only the very best grapes from only the very best vintages are processed here. The grapes are even walked barefoot by a group of people to the rhythm of music, in large fermentation tanks, the lagares. Naturally, the other port wines are also of excellent quality and therefore also worthy of the Quinta do Noval label. A number of excellent red wines have also been produced since 2004.
