Description
Grangehurst is a boutique winery located in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, an area known as the heart of South African wine production. The winery was founded in 1992 by Jeremy Walker , who remains the owner and winemaker today. Grangehurst focuses on producing limited quantities of high-quality red wines and rosés, all made with great care.
The winery is situated at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains , one of Stellenbosch's most sought-after wine regions. Here the vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool sea breezes from False Bay. These conditions ensure a slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines with concentrated flavours and balanced acidity.
Grangehurst specialises in classic Bordeaux blends , but also produces wines from other grape varieties such as Pinotage and Shiraz . The emphasis is always on ageing potential and elegance, characteristics that set Grangehurst wines apart from many other South African producers.
Grangehurst The Gap: a unique expression of Stellenbosch
Grangehurst The Gap is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot , supplemented with a small amount of other Bordeaux grape varieties. The wine owes its name to the opening ("the gap") between the Helderberg and the Lourensford Mountains , where the cool wind blows from the ocean. This specific microclimate helps the grapes to ripen optimally, while retaining freshness. Another background to the name is that this is a Non Vintage wine and Jeremy uses 2 vintages to create the best blend from here (The Gap)
The grapes for The Gap are harvested by hand, at the optimum moment of ripeness. Only the best grapes are selected, which contributes to the high quality of the wine.
The vinification and maturation of Grangehurst The Gap
The vinification of The Gap is done with great precision. After manual harvesting, the grapes are carefully destemmed and lightly crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the fruity character of the grapes. During fermentation, the must is regularly pumped over to optimally extract color, tannins and aromas.
After fermentation, the wine matures for a period of 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels , some of which are new. This maturation provides extra complexity and depth, without the wood dominating the fruity expression of the wine. The long bottle maturation at the winery guarantees that the wine is ready to drink at the time of sale, but The Gap also has excellent ageing potential.
Tasting notes from Grangehurst The Gap
Grangehurst The Gap has a deep ruby red colour with purple hues at the rim. On the nose the wine shows complex aromas of dark fruits such as blackcurrants and plums, complemented by hints of cedar , tobacco and a touch of spice from the wood maturation.
On the palate, The Gap is full and concentrated, with firm but ripe tannins and a refreshing acidity that provides balance. The taste has layers of blackberry , cherry and subtle notes of dark chocolate and vanilla . The long, elegant finish underlines the quality of this wine.
