The champagne house Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot is one of the world's most iconic champagne houses. Founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot in Reims, its name and fame were made famous by his daughter-in-law, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, known as the "Grande Dame of Champagne." She took over the house after her husband's early death and, in 1805, became one of the first female entrepreneurs in the wine world. Under her leadership, Veuve Clicquot grew into a brand synonymous with innovation, quality, and style.

The house has been part of the LVMH group since 1987, yet remains true to its tradition of handcrafted blends and a consistent corporate identity. The famous anchor logo symbolizes hope and stability, while the signature yellow color is instantly recognizable worldwide as a symbol of refined luxury.

The Veuve Clicquot cellars are located deep beneath Reims in ancient chalk caves known as "crayères." Here, millions of bottles mature silently under ideal conditions until they reach their perfect balance.

The style of Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot's signature style revolves around power, freshness, and complexity. The Brut is the house's standard cuvée and reflects the perfect balance between intensity and elegance. The wine team, led by cellar master Didier Mariotti, meticulously maintains the house style using more than fifty different crus from Champagne's finest vineyards.

About two-thirds of the grapes come from Premier and Grand Cru villages. The blend typically consists of 50 to 55 percent Pinot Noir, 28 to 33 percent Chardonnay, and 15 to 20 percent Meunier. In addition, between 25 and 35 percent reserve wine is added to ensure consistent flavor and quality.

The wine is aged in the cellars for at least three years, considerably longer than the legal requirement, which makes the mousse finer and the aromas more complex.

The wine Veuve Clicquot Brut

The Brut is the essence of the house. The base is Pinot Noir, which provides structure and strength, while Chardonnay adds refinement and Meunier roundness and fruitiness. Together, they create a champagne with depth, freshness, and character.

Color, smell and taste

The color is bright golden yellow with fine, persistent bubbles. The aroma reveals ripe yellow fruit, such as apricot, pear, and mirabelle plum, complemented by brioche, toast, and light vanilla notes. On the palate, the wine displays a full, harmonious style with fresh acidity and a lively mousse. The balance between power and elegance is precisely what distinguishes Veuve Clicquot.

The finish is long and slightly creamy, with notes of almond and citrus. This champagne is ready to drink, but can also be aged for a few years to gain complexity.

Serving and storage tips

Serve Veuve Clicquot Brut well chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. The wine can be aged for up to five years without losing its freshness. Thanks to its rich structure and fine mousse, it's versatile as an aperitif, but also a culinary delight at the table.

The Cooler Pack Giftbox

The Cooler Pack is a modern gift box that's as practical as it is stylish. The box features integrated cooling, keeping the bottle at the perfect temperature without the need for a separate cooler. The design combines functionality with Veuve Clicquot's iconic yellow, making it the perfect gift or perfect for taking to a dinner or party.

Champagne with a story that never gets old. Veuve Clicquot is so much more than a yellow label.

History of Veuve Clicquot

The story starts in 1772, when Philippe Clicquot founded his champagne house in Reims. But true fame came later, thanks to Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin. She married François Clicquot, who sadly passed away at a young age. At just 27 years old, she took control of the house. In an era where women rarely ran businesses, she made her mark. She became known as “La Veuve Clicquot” – the Widow Clicquot – and grew into an icon of the champagne world.

Under her leadership, the modern method of making champagne bright and sparkling was refined. She introduced the technique of remuage, where bottles are slowly turned so that the sediment collects in the neck. A simple yet brilliant idea that made champagne famous around the world.

Vineyards and location

Veuve Clicquot owns more than 390 hectares of vineyards in Champagne. That’s special, as many houses buy most of their grapes. The vineyards are spread across the best cru villages, including Bouzy, Verzenay and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier are the main grapes here. Together they shape the house style: powerful, fresh and structured.

Most of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir. It gives the wines their recognizable depth and character. Chardonnay adds freshness and finesse, while Meunier brings a touch of fruitiness.

Climate and terroir

Champagne sits in the north of France. Summers are cool, winters are mild, and the climate can be unpredictable. Perfect for grapes that shouldn’t get too ripe. The soil is mainly chalk and limestone, which offers great drainage and a mineral edge in the wines. Combined with the changing seasons, this results in grapes with tension and freshness – exactly what champagne needs.

Fun facts about Veuve Clicquot

  • The famous “Yellow Label” was introduced in 1877 and became the instant signature of the house.
  • Veuve Clicquot was the first champagne exported worldwide, from Russia to the United States.
  • In 2010, 168 bottles of 19th century Veuve Clicquot were found in the Baltic Sea – still drinkable and remarkably fresh.
  • The house owns one of the largest chalk cellars in Reims, endless tunnels where millions of bottles quietly age.
