Description
The journey of the wine importer Miguel Sánchez to Atauta was a stroke of luck for the entire region. On his way through the Ribera del Duero he discovered the small valley with its ancient, abandoned vineyards, more than 400 year old wine cellars, ancient cellar vaults and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century were still there. A wine wonderland that had fallen asleep. The east of the DO was known for being difficult to exploit, because the vines are at a considerable altitude of almost 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, the oldest vines are up to 160 years old, truly unbelievable. An immense wealth! They immediately gave exceptionally beautiful results, after the overgrown plots had been kissed awake. With the appearance of the first wines it became immediately clear that this was not only one of the best wines in the entire country, but even in the entire world! The strictly organic and parcel by parcel separately matured wines are among the best ever obtained from the Tempranillo grape variety.
The harvest of the 0.70 hectares divided into 10 micro-plots of 130 years old in the area of “La Mala” took place on October 20, 2016, with a harvest of 1,842 kg. After a triple selection of plots, bunches and grapes, the wine was gravity-fed in 3 small stainless steel tanks. After 6 days of cold maceration at a temperature below 10ºC and 2 punch-downs per day, the wine fermented for 11 days with its own yeasts at a maximum temperature of 27ºC, adjusting the number of daily punch-downs according to its needs. After alcoholic fermentation, it macerated for 15 days with the skins, looking for the right structural point. Malolactic fermentation and maturation for 16 months in French oak barrels for second use. On September 27, 2018, 907 bottles were produced.
La Mala 2012 is made from 100% Tinto Fino. Bigarreau cherry color. Great aromatic intensity, La Mala stands out for its minerality in the form of aromas of white chalk powder that combines perfectly with aromas of aromatic plants, lavender, rosemary, chamomile combined with ripe red and black berries and slightly spicy notes. With an elegant attack and development in the mouth, it has a powerful finish where the typical minerality of La Mala is once again felt.

I had two vintages from the terroir bottlings to taste, 2012 and 2013, which always makes for an interesting comparison. The 2012 La Mala is from the plot they consider to deliver more mineral wines. It was fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured for 18 months in French barriques, 30% of them new. It shows the power and concentration of the very dry year, with more finesse and perfume than the Llanos del Almendro from the same year, but it's not as refined as the 2013 La Mala. 1,274 bottles were filled in July 2014.
The 2013s were terrific, and scoring them is splitting hairs. Ultimately, it comes down to taste: if you prefer the more mineral Llanos del Almendro or the power of Valdegatiles. The two projects to resume producing San Juan and La Mala are great, but they are produced in tiny quantities, which makes them almost impossible to obtain.

Dominio de Atauta Ribera del Duero La Mala 2012 | $140
Dense and firm, this chewy red delivers black cherry and red plum flavors, with licorice, menthol, mineral and toasty notes that break through the muscular tannins. This coasts on fresh acidity through the floral, spicy finish. Best from 2018 through 2030. 50 cases imported.

Opaque ruby. Hugely perfumed aromas of red fruit liqueur, Asian spices and potpourri, with a smoky mineral quality building in the glass. Strikingly pure and vibrant on the palate, offering sappy raspberry, blood orange and rose pastille flavors and an exotic touch of five-spice powder. Shows a suave blend of power and finesse, finishing subtly tannic and very long, with no rough edges and outstanding energy. Pretty remarkable stuff, and shockingly approachable now, if you're not the patient sort. These vines are now more than a century old.
