Description
This Flor de Vetus Tinto from Bodegas Vetus comes from the vineyards of the Bodega located in the DO Toro planted in 1990. The vineyards are around 20 hectares and are located at an altitude of 700 meters. The climate is continental with influence from the sea. Vetus comes from the Latin word veto - vetare, which means 'forbidden, not allowed'.
Vetus is located in the heart of the rapidly emerging wine region of Toro. It is an example of the potential of this region and the modern wines that are made there. Lots of fruit and concentration. The Artevino Group (Vina Izadi, Villacreces, Orben) works together with Bodegas Vetus in Toro chooses to make wines based on the grape Tinta de Toro (the local Tempranillo). The favorite Pruno wine is the brother (or sister) of the Vetus. The Vetus is made from 100% Tinta de Fino (Tempranillo clone) which is fermented after picking in stainless steel tanks - temperature controlled. The wine is then matured for 9-10 months in 50% American oak, 50% French of which 50% is new oak and 50% second year
The Flor de Vetus Tinto has a full red color with purple hues. The wine is medium to full bodied with in the nose, red and black ripe fruit. We smell tones of licorice, herbs, coffee and caramel. The mouth is powerful and fresh at the same time. Very structured and we were surprised that this Toro wine has a beautiful acidity. Clearly a modern style Toro where fruit is in the foreground. The wine is well structured and perfectly balanced wine with an excellent aftertaste.

The 2020 Flor de Vetus was produced with grapes from the main property and five other plots that contribute a little Garnacha to the blend. 2020 was cooler than 2019, but they had spring frost that reduced yields by 45% and they harvested earlier. It fermented in stainless steel with yeasts selected from the property. It has 14.25% alcohol with good freshness and acidity, black rather than red fruit and a heady and smoky twist from the 12 months in barrel. 70,000 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2022.
Vetus is the Toro project from the Artevino group (Izadi, Villacreces...) from the Antón family of Rioja. They have 20 hectares of vines around the winery divided into six plots with different soils certified organic since 2017 (but the wines do not carry certification), plus they have another 14 hectares in San Román de Hornija, Morales de Toro, Villaester and Venialbo. They produce 160,000 bottles with the wild and powerful character from the zone.

Fine oak spices, warm stones and a hint of cedar and dark chocolate to the fresh blackberries and dark cherries. Dusty, fine-coated tannins on the full-bodied palate, delivering a juicy and fairly polished finish. Long and driven. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.

Bodegas Vetus situated in the beautiful Toro area is characterized by a strive for excellent groundbreaking quality in its wine. Using state-of-the-art technologies and working with excellent grape qualities, this bodega reflects the essence of the Toro wine. Naturally, the best French woods are used to impose the wine. Due to a double manual selection of the grapes both in the vineyard and on the selection table, only the best grapes are eligible for vinification.
Since its founding in 2003, Bodegas Vetus has been committed to preserving the all-essential regional character of the Toro, while at the same time adding the winery new concepts. In 2003, the Antón family (the face of Grupo Artevino) expanded to the Toro region, well aware of the region's future potential. After selecting several vineyards, they made the first vintage from Vetus, a wine designed to fully preserve the essence of the region, but also complement it with new nuances and goals. Encouraged by the success of the wine, an estate was set up in the heart of the region and a bodega was built which opened in 2008. The bodega's design is modern and balanced and consists of 3 buildings, each in harmony with the others. Each building houses a different wine production process.
Bodegas Vetus is built on a ridge and overlooks the beautiful estate. The vineyards are planted with Tinta de Toro and are close to the town of Toro, in the heart of the region.
