About the Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo
Quintaluna is essentially a "second wine" from the renowned Ossian estate, located in southern Rueda. The name Quintaluna is an illusion, referring to the fifth phase of the moon. The estate operates entirely organically, meaning that the phases of the moon must be taken into account. A rigorous selection process in the more than 150-year-old vineyards results in a small quantity of the exclusive Ossian wine, considered the finest white wine in Spain for several years. Javier Zaccagnini, who is also the director of the renowned Aalto vineyard in Ribera del Duero, is the initiator of this mini-project.
Grapes and aging process of the Quintaluna Verdejo from Ossian
The Quintaluna grapes come from a number of very small, sandy vineyards located in northern Segovia. They are planted in sandy soil. Most of them are very old vines from the pre-phylloxera period, ungrafted and preserved because the sandy soil prevented the plague. The vines are therefore over 120 years old, and some even over 180 years old. The hand-harvested grapes are first stored in a cold room to preserve their aromatic qualities. After undergoing a meticulous selection process, they are gently destemmed and pressed. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine remains on its lees (sur lie) in oak barrels and stainless steel for 12 months and is then bottle-aged.
Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo Tasting Notes
Quintaluna expresses the freshness and authentic character of the Verdejo varietal and is certainly not your average Verdejo, but rather an authentic, elegant, and complex wine. Through deliberately low yields, Ossian aims to enhance concentration and varietal character. Ossian's Quintaluna not only renews its image but is a new wine with a new philosophy and another leap in quality. Ossian's "entry-level" wine is no ordinary wine; at Ossian, they are committed to excellence. The expertise is immediately evident. In the glass, this pure 100% Verdejo is a bright straw yellow with beautiful tears. Beautifully ripe citrus fruits dominate the nose, along with notes of green apple and gooseberry. The Quintaluna is very well-balanced with good minerality and finesse. It offers unparalleled value for money.

The 2024 Quintaluna is a village white from Nieva, produced with grapes from their own vines planted with a massal selection from the old vines. Since 2022/2023, all the grapes for Quintaluna come from their own vineyards. In 2024, they lost a good part of the crop from frost (the temperature got down to minus-seven degrees Celsius, which killed 70% to 80% of the crop!). Nieva has deep sandy soils, and the wines are crystalline, fresh and citrusy. The full clusters were pressed, and the must fermented with full lees in small stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts. It was kept with lees in the fermentation vessels for nine months. It has a serious, clean and characterful nose, elegant, nuanced and complex, subtle and insinuating. The wine is vibrant and fresh, with contained ripeness and 12.5% alcohol. It finishes dry, with a chalky feeling. This is the finest vintage for Quintaluna that I can remember. 50,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in the summer of 2025.
Ossian, the Rueda project from the Pago de Carraovejas group, has built a new winery and are studying their soils and improving their range. They started with a handful of hectares and today have 110 hectares of vineyards and produce 190,000 bottles.
We tasted the current range of 2024 and 2023. 2024 was defined by two severe spring frosts on April 23–24 that significantly reduced yields. A wet autumn and winter, followed by a cool spring and a dry, moderate summer, led to a long growing season. Harvest ran from September 10 to October 9 under ideal sanitary conditions, producing healthy, balanced fruit despite the lower crop.
2023 saw how a mild autumn and winter advanced the growing cycle, resulting in one of the earliest harvests on record. Despite some moderate spring frosts, warm and dry summer conditions accelerated ripening, with harvest beginning on August 29. Timely rains in early September helped complete maturation, yielding ripe, balanced grapes from an early and relatively warm vintage. The wines from 2023 are fresher than the ones from 2022. And they define 2024 as a cool vintage, which they compared to 2021. I previewed some wines from 2024, and they are clearly a step up from 2023, perhaps the finest examples of Ossian and Capitel ever. 2025 has a fresh character, but it's concentrated in the style of 2020.
In 2023, they produced three single-vineyard wines from three different villages, one from Nieva, one from Aldeanueva del Codonal and Santiuste de S. Juan Bautista, 1,000 bottles of each, from three small plots that are going to be sold together in a box of three.

This is a vibrant expression of verdejo with concentration and texture. It has a citric side reminiscent of grapefruit and a juicy character. This comes exclusively from the town of Nieva from granitic sandy soils and some schist. Drink or hold.

From: Ribera del Duero: Take a Walk on the Light Side (Sep 2026)
The 2024 Ossian Quintaluna is Verdejo from Segovia, sourced from younger vineyards and aged in foudres and barrels for up to one year. Slightly oxidative green apple, fennel and herbal notes define an expressive bouquet. It is rich and concentrated on the palate, with notable volume, freshness and a distinctly continental character. Creamy yet vibrant.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo, September 2026
After decades as a leading restaurateur in Segovia, José María Ruiz launched Pago de Carraovejas in Peñafiel in 1987. His son, Pedro Ruiz, now leads the operation as part of the larger Alma Carraovejas group (with additional wineries in Nieva, Galicia and Gredos). He has taken the family business in a new stylistic direction, and nowhere is this more evident than at Pago de Carraovejas. Since 2022, the wines have become lighter and more elegant, with clearer varietal expression and more precise management of ripeness. Tasting the Pago de Carraovejas, El Anejón and Cuesta de las Liebres across the 2022- 2024 vintages illustrates this evolution. These vintages demanded exacting vineyard and cellar work, but the team nevertheless managed to preserve the wines’ regional identity.

Ossian is also jokingly referred to as the White Aalto because Ossian is the mini-project of Javier Zaccagnini, also partner and director of Aalto in Ribera Del Duero, and Ismael Gazalo, whose family has been making wine in the region for years. The extremely old Verdejo vineyards are located in the village of 'Nieva' and are 850 meters above sea level. The vines are between 100 and 160 years old making this the longest certified vineyard in Castilla y León. On Ossian not just any Rueda is made as you will find thirteen in a dozen. No, on the contrary, Javier hired a Burgundian topoenologist. Together they vinify the small yield unique Verdejo in a Burgundian way, just like Pierre does with Chardonnay in Meursault and Puligny Montrachet. In some years a top-top cuvée is made 'Ossian Capitel'. In a few years, Ossian has grown into Spain's most revered white wine.
In 2013, Ossian was bought by José María Ruiz (from the top house Pago de Carraovejas from the Ribera del Duero) and Zaccagnini left the company. Nevertheless, the young winery remains focused on the same high quality standards and there is even more innovation and Ossian is among the absolute top of the Verdejo wines from the Rueda.
