Winery Château Doisy-Daëne

Château Doisy-Daëne is one of the historic houses of Barsac and has been in the hands of the Dubourdieu family since 1924. As a Deuxième Cru Classé from 1855, the château enjoys international recognition, particularly thanks to the influence of Denis Dubourdieu, one of Bordeaux's most influential winemakers and a specialist in dry white wine. In addition to the famous Barsac, the château also produces one of the region's most highly regarded dry white Bordeaux. The style revolves around precision, finesse, and a strong focus on terroir. Region, climate and location

Although Château Doisy-Daëne is located in Barsac, this wine is released as Bordeaux Blanc. The vineyards are situated on the calcareous plateau of Barsac, an exceptional terroir for dry white wine. A thin layer of clayey sand rests on limestone, locally known as the “red sands of Barsac”. This slightly porous limestone limits root depth and gives the wine its recognizable tension and minerality. The terroir retains sufficient moisture during warm periods, allowing the grapes to maintain their freshness. In a warmer vintage like 2025, precisely this natural balance proves to be of great value. This results in a wine that feels both energetic and concentrated.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The 2025 Grand Vin Sec is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from carefully selected plots on the Barsac Plateau. This wine demonstrates just how exceptionally Sauvignon Blanc can behave on calcareous soils. Whereas Sauvignon elsewhere can sometimes become emphatically aromatic or tropical, the limestone here creates a more linear, refined, and distinctly mineral style.

Harvest, vinification and aging

After optimal ripening, a few bunches are selected per vine from all Sauvignon plots. If necessary, the grapes undergo a short skin maceration, followed by a slow pressing protected against oxidation. Free run-off and must are strictly separated to maintain maximum precision. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, one-fifth of which are renewed annually. Subsequently, the wine ages for eight months on the fine lees, with regular bâtonnage providing extra texture and complexity. This sur lie aging imparts greater depth without losing tension and freshness.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Doisy-Daëne Grand Vin Sec immediately stands out for its precision and tension. On the nose, notes of lemon oil, grapefruit, and white peach, complemented by white pepper, subtle spiciness, and floral accents. Beneath this lies a pronounced chalky minerality, with aromas reminiscent of chalk, wet stone, and finely ground limestone. On the palate, it is taut and energetic, with an almost razor-sharp focus. The wine possesses great tension and a clear linear structure, yet remains expressive and refined at the same time. The sur lie aging imparts a subtle texture and added depth, while the chalky soil provides an almost briny precision. Towards the finish, light tropical nuances subtly emerge, without the wine losing its crisp character. It is precisely the combination of tension, refinement, and terroir expression that makes this wine particularly convincing.
