Winery

Château Smith Haut Lafitte belongs to the absolute top of Pessac-Léognan and is classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Since Daniel and Florence Cathiard took over the estate in 1990, the château has undergone an impressive development in quality. The winery is known for its sustainable approach, with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture. In addition, Smith Haut Lafitte has its own cooperage, allowing for complete control over the production of the oak barrels. The combination of innovation, terroir, and a strong focus on detail has secured the château a permanent place among the great names of Bordeaux. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

The vineyards are located in Martillac, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The soil consists of deep pebble and gravel deposits over a clay subsoil. These soils store heat during the day and gradually release it at night, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. At the same time, the clay layer provides sufficient water reserves during dry periods. This terroir produces wines with a unique combination of power, refinement, and freshness. Furthermore, the location south of Bordeaux ensures a long growing season and excellent phenolic ripening.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2025 blend consists of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 49 years. The vineyards are managed entirely organically and biodynamically. Yields were limited to 28 hectoliters per hectare prior to selection for the estate's various wines. The low yields and advanced age of the vines resulted in grapes of exceptional concentration and aromatic complexity.

Vinification and aging

After a double selection before and after destemming, the grapes are fermented as whole berries. A portion of the bunches is processed whole to obtain extra complexity and structure. Extraction is carried out gently via pigeage and remontage, while long macerations at controlled temperatures between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius ensure an optimal balance between concentration and finesse. Subsequently, the wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which is new wood sourced from the château's own cooperage. During aging, the wine undergoes sur lie maturation, which adds extra depth, texture, and refinement.

Color, smell and taste

The wine displays a deep dark red color. On the nose, aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, wild blackberries, and cassis immediately come to the fore. With additional aeration, notes of peony, sweet spices, fennel seed, star anise, hay, graphite, pencil shavings, and warm earth emerge. On the palate, the remarkable freshness is immediately noticeable. The texture is soft, silky, and refined. Subsequently, the wine builds power and concentration without ever becoming heavy. The structure is impressive, with perfectly ripe tannins, lively acidity, and exceptional length. The finish lingers for minutes with fruit, floral, spiced, and mineral nuances.

Style and character

The 2025 Smith Haut Lafitte combines everything the château is known for: intensity, refinement, energy, and balance. The wine possesses the concentration of a great vintage, yet is supported by striking freshness and precision. Cabernet Sauvignon clearly plays the leading role, providing structure, length, and aging potential. At the same time, Merlot and Cabernet Franc contribute roundness and aromatic complexity. The result is a wine that is already impressive, but above all seems built for the long term.

Volume

The 2025 vintage is regarded by many critics as one of the highlights of Bordeaux of the past decade. At Smith Haut Lafitte, this resulted in a wine with remarkable harmony between concentration and freshness. Low yields, the organic and biodynamic approach, and the excellent ripeness of the grapes have led to a wine that already appears exceptionally complete. The alcohol content has not yet been officially published but is expected to be around 13.5%. The wine will become accessible from approximately 2032 but possesses sufficient structure to develop effortlessly well beyond 2060.

Food and wine pairings

This wine comes into its own beautifully with rack of lamb, côte de boeuf, roasted beef, and refined game dishes. Dishes with black truffle, morels, or slow-cooked stews also make an excellent pairing. Thanks to its fresh structure and refined tannins, the wine remains elegant alongside rich and powerful dishes.

Château Smith Haut-Lafitte has 56ha of vineyard and is owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. Since their purchase in 1990, the quality has increased enormously, thanks to the works in the vineyard and the investments in a state-of-the-art installation. In 2010 these efforts were rewarded by Parker with a score of 100/100 for their 2009 vintage. Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte is a very demonstrative wine, very balanced and extremely concentrated with great aging potential. Visitors to the castle can also have a very luxurious dinner, stay overnight or enjoy the 'vinotherapy' in 'Les Sources de Caudalie'.
