EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED END OF SPRING 2028
Château Pétrus 2025 is without a doubt one of the absolute highlights of Bordeaux 2025. With ratings of up to 100 points and words of praise from virtually every international critic, Pétrus once again confirms its status as one of the most coveted and iconic wines in the world. The vintage combines exceptional concentration with refinement, freshness, and precision, allowing the power of the terroir to be fully expressed.
Winery Château Pétrus
Château Pétrus is the most legendary estate in Pomerol and belongs to the absolute world elite of wine. The château possesses only approximately 11.5 hectares of vineyards, situated on the famous blue clay plateau of Pomerol. This unique soil has an exceptional capacity to retain water, which proves to be of great value, especially during warm and dry years.
Under the leadership of Olivier Berrouet, Pétrus remains true to its philosophy of precision and terroir expression. In a year like 2025, the clay terroir once again proved its immense value. While many vineyards faced drought stress, the vines at Pétrus were able to continue functioning and ripening evenly, resulting in a wine of exceptional balance and structure.
Vintage 2025 on the blue clay plateau
According to Olivier Berrouet, 2025 could well become the new normal. The warm and dry conditions resulted in small berries with an exceptionally high concentration. On average, no less than 190 kilograms of grapes were needed for 100 liters of wine, whereas historically this was closer to 150 kilograms. The average berry weighed only 0.80 grams, a clear sign of the enormous concentration of the vintage.
The yield amounted to only 20 hectoliters per hectare, an exceptionally low level that contributes directly to the depth and intensity of the wine. To preserve the finesse, extraction was deliberately carried out more gently than usual. The number of remontages was halved, maceration was limited to approximately fourteen days, and the temperature remained below 25 degrees Celsius.
A wine of power and precision
Although Pétrus is known for its richness and concentration, the 2025 distinguishes itself through its remarkable balance. The wine possesses the structure and depth of the greatest classic vintages, but combines this with striking freshness and aromatic refinement. Neal Martin even speaks of a wine reminiscent of some of Pétrus's great post-war vintages.
The wine demonstrates how Pétrus' unique terroir can produce both power and elegance. The structure is impressive, but never heavy. It is all about precision, tension, and length.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, Château Pétrus 2025 displays a deep, almost opaque ruby red color. The nose opens with an impressive aromatic palette of ripe cherries, blackcurrants, blackberries, blueberries, and cassis. Additionally, floral notes of violets, iris, and rose petals appear, complemented by nuances of licorice, clove, five-spice powder, tobacco, iron, iodine, and wet stone.
The taste is impressively layered and powerful without ever becoming heavy. The texture is silky and enveloping, while the wine simultaneously possesses remarkable vertical tension. Ripe red and dark fruits are supported by refined tannins, fresh acidity, and exceptional minerality. Notes of cherries, strawberries, blackcurrants, liquorice, and spices build up to a long, harmonious finish in which floral nuances and iron-like minerality linger for minutes.
What stands out most is the combination of concentration and elegance. The wine possesses enormous depth and power, yet remains transparent, refined, and perfectly balanced.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rates the wine 98-100 points and speaks of a legend in the making. He praises the enormous concentration, the lively acidity, the sweet tannins, and the impressive length. According to Kelley, the intensity of the wine is reminiscent of some of Pétrus's greatest post-war vintages.
James Suckling also awards 99-100 points and emphasizes the purity of the fruit, the floral complexity, and the combination of richness and freshness. Neal Martin rates the wine 97-99 points and praises the exceptional symmetry, structure, and persistence. Georgina Hindle of Decanter calls the wine a potential 100-pointer and one of the very best wines of the entire vintage. She particularly praises the combination of power, softness, aromatic intensity, and freshness.
The common thread in all reviews is clear: Château Pétrus 2025 combines the power of a great classic Pomerol with a refinement and precision that make it one of the most impressive wines of Bordeaux 2025.
Storage potential
Although the wine already displays impressive harmony, it is still fully at the beginning of its development. The combination of concentration, acidity, tannins, and minerality gives it enormous aging potential. The optimal drinking period is expected from around 2033, after which the wine will continue to develop for decades. Many connoisseurs see potential well beyond 2065. The wine comes directly from the Chateau and is packaged in OWC/1.

A wine of remarkable density and persistence, the 2025 Pétrus shows huge potential, unwinding in the glass with brooding aromas of sweet cherries, berries, violets and spices. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's elegantly muscular, with prodigious levels of concentration, lively acids, sweet tannins and a long, palate-staining finish. It's a legend in the making that recalls the intensity of flavor of some of the great post-war Pétrus vintages.

The purity of fruit is really impressive on the nose. It’s rich and flamboyant, giving aromas of black olives, rose stems, blackberries and some blueberries. On the palate it delivers an intense and refined structure with open-grained tannins that keep it fresh and lively, There is the structure of a great past year, but then the flamboyance of aromas and richness.

From: Hot Body, Cold Blood: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur (May 2026)
The 2025 Petrus has an intense nose after several minutes. Black cherries, iodine and violet petals blossom in the glass, quite exuberant and vivacious, leaning more towards the opulent side of Pétrus. The palate is completely different, with peppery red fruit, firm tannins, spicier than recent vintages, insistent grip, but the final third reveals a sense of linearity or verticality. Quite a mercurial Petrus, certainly with a lot of structure that I suspect will come out more after bottling. I tried this from two types of glass, the smaller one focusing the aromatics. Over time, the 2025 reveals an unerring symmetry and persistence. Outstanding.
- By Neal Martin on May 2026
“I think 2025 might become the new normal,” winemaker Olivier Berrouet told me. “The clay did not really change the yield in the end, but it enabled the vines to continue working and avoid any blockage. In a vintage like 2025, the vines produce a lot of structure and tannins, and if you don’t have the capacity to mature that quantity of tannin, you will feel it in the glass. We started picking on August 28 with the young vines, stopped for a few days, restarted on September 5 and finished six days later. We decreased the pumpovers by half and shortened the cuvaison to around 14 days, without going over 25°C to maintain a delicate extraction. This vintage, we needed 190 kg of fruit to make 100 litres of wine, whereas in the past it has been 150 kg. The average berry size was around 0.80 g.”

Gorgeous aromatic profile; a little herbal, inky almost, pencil led, crayon, floral notes of iris and violet, cool blue fruits, mint and fresh raspberry. Some definite stoney minerality on the nose - dark and smoky. Racy and alive, this has zing combined with a chalky graphite grip to the tannins. Fresh and clean, really well defined with tannins that give the structure but despite their presence they're so harmonious. This is just so good, really juicy, mouthwateringly so, but keeps the straight finesse all the way through. It’s soft and totally charming - not over the top at all, yet not discrete either. This has confidence and character. A balance of power and delicacy with a touch of flesh on the finish that gives an extra bounce and sense of enjoyment. A subtle and stealthy wine that sneaks up on you, leaving you wanting more by the finish. 3.65pH. An extra gram of tannins per litre of wine (4g) compared to 3g in 2022. Harvest September 11-20. A potential 100-point wine.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus produces the most famous Merlot wine in the world! The vineyard covers just 11.5 hectares and is planted with 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vines, with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of iron-rich clay.
Château Pétrus: the ultimate icon of Pomerol
Château Pétrus is without a doubt one of the most legendary wine estates in the world. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the plateau of Pomerol, this modest estate has been producing exceptional red wines for decades. Although Pétrus does not carry an official classification (Pomerol has no Grand Cru system), the wine is globally regarded as one of the very best, often mentioned in the same breath as the Premier Crus of the Médoc.
The terroir of Château Pétrus
What makes Pétrus so special is its unique terroir. The 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on a rare subsoil of blue clay; a type of soil found almost nowhere else in Bordeaux. This clay retains water exceptionally well, which is crucial in dry years, and gives the wines their remarkable power and refinement. Its location on the highest point of Pomerol also ensures optimal sun exposure and drainage.
Pétrus produces Merlot in its purest form
Pétrus is almost entirely planted with Merlot. This grape thrives on the heavy clay soil and produces wines that are rich, velvety, and powerful. In some vintages, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc is added, but the focus is always on expressing Merlot at its finest. In the glass, this translates into intense aromas of black fruit, truffle, cocoa, and violets, with a sensual texture and an endless finish. The wine can age for decades, gaining in complexity and depth over time.
Meticulous vinification at Château Pétrus
At Château Pétrus, every detail matters. From rigorous selection in the vineyard to slow fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels - every step of the winemaking process is aimed at crafting a wine that is both grand and elegant. Only a few thousand cases are produced each year, which adds to its exclusivity.
A wine for collectors and true enthusiasts
Pétrus is more than just a wine. It is a collector’s item, a symbol of prestige, and above all a singular taste experience. Those lucky enough to own a bottle will discover the essence of top Bordeaux, made with dedication, tradition, and a pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that reveals its full potential only in the best vintages, making each release eagerly anticipated.
