Winery Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest wineries in Bordeaux and has a history dating back to the thirteenth century. The château owes its name to Pope Clement V, who owned the vineyards before he became pope. Today, the estate is managed by Bernard Magrez and ranks among the absolute elite of Pessac-Léognan. The white wine, in particular, has built an exceptional reputation in recent years thanks to the combination of concentration, refinement, and striking freshness. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Pape Clément is located in Pessac-Léognan, south of the city of Bordeaux. This area is known for its excellent terroir for dry white wines, thanks in part to the deep gravel soils with underlying layers of clay and limestone. This combination ensures excellent drainage, while retaining sufficient moisture during warmer periods. The climate is influenced by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, keeping temperatures relatively moderate. It is precisely this combination of warmth and coolness that contributes to the tension and precision for which the best white Bordeaux is known.

The 2025 vintage displays a striking balance. Despite the ripe style of the year, the freshness was preserved exceptionally well, giving this wine both richness and energy.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend consists of 56% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sémillon, and 14% Sauvignon Gris. Sauvignon Blanc forms the fresh backbone of the wine, bringing citrus, tension, and aromatic precision. Sémillon provides texture, breadth, and extra depth, while Sauvignon Gris adds a riper aromatic dimension. The combination of these grape varieties gives the wine a broad flavor profile. Where Sauvignon Blanc brings liveliness and freshness, the other varieties provide volume and a more enveloping style. It is precisely this balance that makes Pape Clément Blanc distinctive within Pessac-Léognan.

Harvest, vinification and aging

After careful selection, the grapes are vinified separately to optimally preserve the characteristics of each plot. The vinification focuses on precision and texture, while freshness continues to play an important role. For aging, Château Pape Clément opts for a combination of different maturation methods. The wine ages in French oak barrels, large wooden foudres, concrete vats, amphorae, and stainless steel. This versatile approach imparts extra complexity and depth, while maintaining tension and purity. The result is a wine that feels rich and broad without becoming heavy. The aging supports the fruit and structure without being dominant.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine displays a bright light golden color with lively reflections. The nose opens expressively and layered, with notes of candied lemon, mandarin peel, and white flowers. Additionally, nuances of marzipan, mint, and subtle white pepper provide extra complexity.

On the palate, the combination of richness and precision is immediately striking. The texture is broad and almost enveloping, yet remains lively and taut at the same time. Ripe citrus and white stone fruit are supported by a clear line of freshness that gives the wine tension.

The wine develops beautifully in the glass, revealing increasingly more layers. The combination of aromatic intensity, mineral precision, and refined texture makes it clear why this wine is considered by various critics to be among the absolute top of the vintage. The finish is long, intense, and remarkably clean.

Development and drinking window

This wine clearly has aging potential and will continue to develop in the coming years. The combination of concentration, freshness, and structure ensures that the wine not only offers early charm but can also age beautifully.

According to Vinous, the optimal drinking window lies between 2030 and 2040. In its youth, the wine already shows great expression, but additional bottle aging will ensure greater complexity and further integration of aromas.

The history of Château Pape Clément is one of the longest and most fascinating of all French wine estates. Pape Clément is one of the best Grands Crus of Bordeaux and is located in Pessac, in the Graves. It is named after its famous owner Pope Clemens V. Bertrand de Goth, from 1305 the first pope to sit in Avignon under the name of Clemens V, became Archbishop of Bordeaux in 1299 and on this occasion received the existing wine estate, which he then greatly expanded . Clemens' papal name is the reason the château inherited that same name and the wine became an icon.

After his departure to Avignon, the winery remained the property of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. Since this period, the estate has remained well managed for five centuries. The limited production was mainly reserved for use by the Archdiocese itself. During the French Revolution, the château became public domain but was also successfully expanded. The wines were sold through clear management of the owners at the same prices as the 2ième Grand Crus Classés from the Medoc.

In the 1980s, Bernard Magrez, visionary and passionate wine lover, took over the chateau and made its reputation even greater. Bernard Magrez has used all possible means to ensure that the exceptional terroir of Pape Clément, which has made the wines so famous and gives them their extraordinary finesse, continues to express itself as strongly as possible.
