EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild 2025 once again demonstrates why this wine has been regarded for years as one of the strongest second wines of Bordeaux. The vintage combines the ripeness and charm of the warm growing season with a strikingly classic structure, fresh acidity, and refined precision. With ratings of up to 96 points, this edition ranks among the most complete and attractive Le Petit Moutons of recent years.

Winery Château Mouton Rothschild

Le Petit Mouton is the second wine of the legendary Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Cru Classé from Pauillac. Since its introduction in 1993, Le Petit Mouton has developed into much more than a traditional second wine. Thanks to the exceptional quality of the terroir and the rigorous selection at the château, Le Petit Mouton often offers an impressive level that comes close to many Grand Vins from the Médoc.

The wine is produced on the same deep gravel soils as Mouton Rothschild itself. The vineyards cover approximately 82 hectares with an average age of 44 years. The deep gravel soils provide excellent drainage and form the ideal basis for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Volume 2025

The growing season began early after a mild winter. A wet spring with above-average temperatures was followed by a long, dry, and warm summer. Water stress remained present but never excessive, keeping the grapes small, healthy, and highly concentrated. At the end of August, approximately 80 millimeters of rain brought relief to the vineyards at precisely the right moment. This slowed sugar buildup while preserving acidity, ultimately resulting in a more classic profile than initially expected.

According to winemaker Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, the vintage initially seemed to be evolving towards the powerful profile of 2022, but this changed after the rainfall in late August. The result is a wine that combines the concentration of a warm year with the freshness, lower alcohol levels, and elegance of a classic Bordeaux vintage.

The harvest took place between September 5 and 20, the earliest harvest in the history of the estate. Despite the small yields, the grapes were exceptionally healthy and fully ripe.

Assembly and upbringing

The 2025 consists of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine matured for 18 months in oak barrels, 50% of which were new. The alcohol content is a remarkably modest 13%, which contributes to the fresh and balanced style of this vintage.

The relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, length, and classic Pauillac characteristics, while Merlot adds extra roundness and accessibility.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, Le Petit Mouton 2025 presents a deep ruby red. The nose opens with intense aromas of cassis, blackberries, blueberries, and wild strawberries. Additionally, floral notes of violets appear, complemented by wild mint, cedarwood, spices, and subtle toasted accents from wood aging.

The taste is rich, juicy, and layered. Dark berries, black cherries, and cassis form the heart of the wine, supported by notes of black pepper, spices, and a subtle savory edge. The tannins are velvety yet distinct, giving the wine structure without severity. The combination of ripe fruit and fresh tension is striking, making the wine feel both powerful and refined at the same time.

The finish is long, harmonious, and classic in character, with persistent notes of dark fruit, spices, and a beautiful mineral freshness.

Summary of professional reviews

William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rates the wine 91-93 points and describes it as rich, powerful, and muscular, with a broad structure, high fruit concentration, and fine powdery tannins. James Suckling awards 95-96 points and praises the combination of ripeness, juiciness, and remarkable balance at only 13% alcohol.

Neal Martin also rates the wine 91-93 points and describes an intense nose of cassis, blackberries, violets, and wild mint. He emphasizes the refined acidity, the spiciness on the mid-palate, and the classic Pauillac finish. According to Martin, the wine will gain even more complexity after a few years of bottle aging.

The common thread in virtually all reviews is the combination of ripe fruit, refined tannins, classic structure, and a striking freshness that suits the character of Pauillac perfectly.

Château Mouton Rothschild is an icon of Pauillac. This legendary estate combines a rich history, unique terroir, and wines that belong to the very top worldwide. A name that fascinates wine lovers and collectors generation after generation.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. His aim was to serve his own wine to his distinguished guests. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over. Two years later, he decided that all wines should be bottled at the château itself — a revolutionary move in Bordeaux at the time. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the famous 1855 classification.

Later, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the helm. She modernized the estate and in 1962 opened a museum on the property. After her passing in 2014, the château came under the leadership of her children Camille, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais, keeping it very much a family affair.

Location and terroir in Pauillac

Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from the mild maritime climate and the protection of the nearby Les Landes forest. The soil is made up of gravel over layers of clay and limestone. This unique combination delivers powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.

Pauillac itself is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations. The village is home to three Premier Grands Crus Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and of course Château Mouton Rothschild.

Grapes and winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate covers about 90 hectares of vineyards. Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than eighty percent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot complete the blend. Together they provide wines with depth, structure, and complexity.

The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. In the impressive cellars, they are vinified in modern oak vats, with each parcel treated separately. This ensures that the character of each plot can fully express itself in the final wine.

Special wines from the estate

Alongside the Grand Vin, the château also produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton. Made from younger vines, it is approachable earlier in its life. There is also a white wine, Aile d’Argent, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a touch of Muscadelle. Fresh, aromatic, and released only in small quantities.

Another signature of Château Mouton Rothschild is the label art. Since 1945, a world-renowned artist has been commissioned each year to design a unique label. Names such as Picasso, Miró, and Warhol have all contributed, making these bottles true collector’s items.
