EXCLUSIVE - DELIVERY SPRING 2028

The 2025 Château Mouton Rothschild is an exceptionally powerful and precise Pauillac, with a historically high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend consists of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot, the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in a grand vin in recent memory. This gives the wine its deep structure, enormous tension, and classic Mouton signature. With scores of up to 99-100 points, this 2025 belongs to the absolute top of Bordeaux.

Winery Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the five Premier Grand Cru Classé wines of Bordeaux and is among the most iconic names of Pauillac. The château is owned by the Rothschild family and is known for its powerful, aristocratic style, its longevity, and the famous artist's label designed annually by a different artist. Mouton combines classic Pauillac structure with a distinct character of its own: deep, graphite-like, intense, and often very recognizable. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

The wine and blend

The 2025 Mouton Rothschild consists of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot. That extremely high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is historic and fully defines the style of the wine. The Cabernet gives the wine its straight structure, deep blackcurrant fruit, graphite notes, and enormous aging potential. Merlot plays only a minor supporting role and subtly rounds off the wine without softening the classic Pauillac line.

Vineyard, terroir and vintage

The Mouton vineyards are situated on deep gravel soils in Pauillac. These soils are excellently drained and particularly suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2025, Cabernet Sauvignon produced very small berries, often less than one gram per berry, even on old vines. This explains the remarkable flavor intensity and concentration of this wine.

The grand vin represents 52% of the production and has an alcohol content of 13.1%. That relatively controlled alcohol level contributes to the balance and freshness of the wine. Despite its power, the 2025 remains tight, precise, and classically structured.

Vinification and aging

Mouton Rothschild's vinification is aimed at maximum precision and preserving the natural power of the terroir. Aging takes place in oak barrels, where structure, depth, and aromatic complexity are further developed. In 2025, everything revolves around the enormous Cabernet Sauvignon concentration, resulting in a wine with great tension, length, and a distinctly classic Pauillac structure.

Color, smell and taste

Deep ruby red to purple in color. The nose is intense and layered with aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, rose petals, and lavender. Behind these emerge notes of graphite, cigar box, espresso, menthol, minerality, and subtle citrus blossom.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, but above all impressive for its density and precision. The tannins are ultrafine, powerful, and fully interwoven with the fruit. Dark berries, graphite, floral notes, and mineral accents slowly build towards a long, energetic finish. The aftertaste is very long and structured, with a combination of power, freshness, and elegance typical of great Mouton.

Summary of professional reviews

James Suckling rates Château Mouton Rothschild 2025 99-100 points, highlighting the glamorous aromatics, floral notes, al dente fruit, blackcurrants, minerality, and ultra-fine tannins. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate gives 97-99 points, describing the wine as dense, powerful, and deep, with crème de cassis, blueberries, espresso, cigar box, and violets. Antonio Galloni of Vinous rates the wine 96-98 points, noting the sultry density, graphite notes, lavender, rose petal, menthol, and enormous potential. The common thread in all the reviews is clear: this is a monumental Cabernet-driven Mouton with exceptional structure and length.

Château Mouton Rothschild is an icon of Pauillac. This legendary estate combines a rich history, unique terroir, and wines that belong to the very top worldwide. A name that fascinates wine lovers and collectors generation after generation.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. His aim was to serve his own wine to his distinguished guests. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over. Two years later, he decided that all wines should be bottled at the château itself — a revolutionary move in Bordeaux at the time. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the famous 1855 classification.

Later, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the helm. She modernized the estate and in 1962 opened a museum on the property. After her passing in 2014, the château came under the leadership of her children Camille, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais, keeping it very much a family affair.

Location and terroir in Pauillac

Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from the mild maritime climate and the protection of the nearby Les Landes forest. The soil is made up of gravel over layers of clay and limestone. This unique combination delivers powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.

Pauillac itself is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations. The village is home to three Premier Grands Crus Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and of course Château Mouton Rothschild.

Grapes and winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate covers about 90 hectares of vineyards. Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than eighty percent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot complete the blend. Together they provide wines with depth, structure, and complexity.

The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. In the impressive cellars, they are vinified in modern oak vats, with each parcel treated separately. This ensures that the character of each plot can fully express itself in the final wine.

Special wines from the estate

Alongside the Grand Vin, the château also produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton. Made from younger vines, it is approachable earlier in its life. There is also a white wine, Aile d’Argent, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a touch of Muscadelle. Fresh, aromatic, and released only in small quantities.

Another signature of Château Mouton Rothschild is the label art. Since 1945, a world-renowned artist has been commissioned each year to design a unique label. Names such as Picasso, Miró, and Warhol have all contributed, making these bottles true collector’s items.
