Winery

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most respected names in Bordeaux and has been considered the unofficial "first growth" of Saint-Julien for decades. The estate is situated directly next to Château Latour, separated by only a stone wall. Under the leadership of the Delon family, the château is known for its uncompromising philosophy of quality, extremely meticulous selection, and exceptional aging potential. The iconic gate on the label refers to the historic entrance to the estate and is recognizable to collectors worldwide. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

The wine comes from the famous Grand Enclos, the historic heart of the estate. This unique plot borders directly on the Gironde and benefits from a special microclimate that allows for early ripening and offers protection against frost. The soil consists of a complex combination of deep gravel layers, sandy gravel soils, and clayey subsoils. This exceptional variation produces wines with depth, precision, and a character that is reproduced nowhere else in Bordeaux. For generations, the terroir of the Grand Enclos has formed the basis for some of the longest-lasting wines of the Médoc.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2025 Château Léoville Las Cases consists of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon thus plays an even more dominant role than in many previous vintages. The growing season was characterized by warm and sunny conditions, during which the team deliberately maintained taller canopy to create extra shade and preserve the freshness of the grapes. The harvest took place from September 5 to 20, 2025, and was the earliest harvest ever in the history of the château.

Vinification and aging

The 2025 was vinified in the estate's new, ultra-modern wine cellar, where work is carried out plot by plot using a combination of wooden and stainless steel tanks. Thanks to the large number of separate fermentation tanks, each plot can be processed individually. The wine then ages for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, about 80% of which are new. During this aging, sur lie aging contributes to extra texture, complexity, and refinement. The result is a wine in which power, precision, and elegance come together perfectly.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 displays a deep, almost opaque ruby red color. On the nose, layers of cassis, black cherries, plums, and blueberries open up, followed by graphite, cedarwood, pencil shavings, violets, and subtle spices. As the wine develops, notes of tobacco, cocoa, eucalyptus, and mineral rock appear. On the palate, the wine combines immense concentration with striking precision. The tannins are powerful yet exceptionally refined. The fresh acidity provides tension and length, while the finish lingers for minutes with notes of dark fruit, graphite, and mineral nuances.

Style and character

While some recent vintages of Léoville Las Cases were slightly more accessible in their youth, the 2025 returns to the classic style for which the château became famous. This is a serious, deeply concentrated, and structured wine that demands time. At the same time, it possesses a striking purity of fruit and a refinement that keeps the wine elegant despite its power. It is a wine that displays both the traditional grandeur of Saint-Julien and the precision of modern winemaking techniques.

Volume

The 2025 vintage is regarded within the château as a particularly successful expression of the Grand Enclos. Despite the warm conditions, the balance between ripeness and freshness was preserved excellently. The wine combines the concentration of a great year with a strikingly energetic structure. The alcohol content is 13.65%, while the pH of 3.56 contributes to the freshness and long aging potential. The expected drinking window runs from 2035 to 2075, during which the wine will continue to develop over decades.

Food and wine pairings

This monumental Saint-Julien is best enjoyed with classic dishes such as côte de boeuf, roasted lamb, game, venison, pigeon, and slow-cooked beef. Dishes featuring black truffle, mushrooms, and rich sauces also complement the wine's depth perfectly. With sufficient aging, it makes an impressive accompaniment to refined gastronomic menus.

In the heart of the Médoc, Château Léoville Poyferré has always been one of the most prestigious wineries. There was once a single domain called Léoville that was famous throughout the region. In the course of history it has come into the possession of different families through heirs and major events. In 1865 the domain came into the hands of the bankers Baron d'Erlanger and Armand Lalande. They had to contend with setbacks, in the form of the grape aphid and mildew epidemics. Today the castle belongs to the Cuvelier family. They have invested enormously since the 1980s with extraordinary results. Today the château belongs to the top of the Saint-Julien.
