Winery

Château Le Gay is one of the most prestigious estates in Pomerol. The winery is owned by the Parent family and boasts an exceptional location on the famous Pomerol plateau. Over the past decades, Château Le Gay has built a reputation for powerful, concentrated, and long-lasting wines that are among the most sought-after in the appellation. Thanks to a combination of low yields, meticulous selection, and a highly ambitious vinification approach, Le Gay ranks among the absolute elite of the Right Bank of Bordeaux. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

The vineyard of Château Le Gay covers over 11 hectares and lies as a single continuous plot on the Pomerol plateau. The soil consists of a combination of clay and gravel, one of the most prized terroirs of the appellation. The clay provides water reserves during dry periods, while the gravel offers excellent drainage. This combination produces wines with great concentration, depth, and a characteristic mineral tension. In the warm and dry growing season of 2025, this soil structure played an important role in preserving freshness and balance.

Grapes and vineyard management

The 2025 Château Le Gay is composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The vines have an average age of approximately twenty years and are planted at a density of 6,500 to 9,000 vines per hectare. In the summer, the bunches are carefully thinned and ripening is closely monitored. The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates and undergo a double selection at both the bunch and berry levels. Due to the extremely strict selection, the yield remained limited to just 19.5 hectoliters per hectare, one of the lowest in the appellation.

Vinification and aging

The vinification of Le Gay is among the most labor-intensive in Bordeaux. After a cold maceration of fifteen days at 6 degrees Celsius, the grapes are vinified entirely in new French oak barrels. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place directly in the barrel. This method ensures an exceptional integration of fruit, tannins, and wood. Subsequently, the wine ages for 12 to 16 months in the same high-quality barrels. During aging, sur lie aging contributes extra texture, complexity, and depth.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 opens with a complex and seductive aromatic profile of black cherries, plums, blueberries, and ripe blackberries. Additionally, nuances of flowers, lavender, truffle, tea, orange zest, cocoa, espresso, liquorice, and subtle spices are present. On the palate, the wine is rich and concentrated, yet remarkably refined. The tannins are silky and perfectly integrated. The combination of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and mineral tension creates an excellent balance. The finish is long, layered, and aromatic, with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, and spices that linger for a long time.

Style and character

While Le Gay is primarily known for its power and concentration in some years, the 2025 reveals a strikingly refined side. Virtually all critics emphasize the combination of richness and elegance. The wine still possesses the depth and intensity for which Le Gay is known, but also displays more freshness, precision, and terroir expression. This results in a harmonious Pomerol with great charm and, at the same time, impressive aging potential.

Volume

The 2025 growing season was characterized by a warm and dry summer, followed by rain just before the harvest. This allowed the grapes to rehydrate slightly without losing concentration. Selection during the harvest was extremely strict to retain only perfectly ripe fruit. The result is a wine with a deep color, great aromatic expression, and a beautiful balance between power and freshness. The alcohol content is 14.0%. The expected drinking window runs from 2030 to 2050, with further aging expected to yield additional complexity.

Food and wine pairings

This Pomerol pairs excellently with rack of lamb, roasted beef, veal, and refined game dishes. Dishes with black truffle, morels, or slow-cooked stews also complement the wine's depth beautifully. Thanks to the refined tannins and fresh structure, the wine remains elegant alongside rich dishes.

Ideally situated on the Pomerol plateau, Château Le Gay used to be owned by the Robin sisters. The Parent family took over the château and its 10,5 hectares in 2002.

Since the, the vineyard and cellar have been constantly evolving. Four new hectares of high-density vines were planted, and more than half of the rest of the plateau land was also restructured. Convinced that "vinification intégrale" fermentation enhances quality, Henri Parent began renovating the Château Le Gay cellar in 2014 (despite its recent renovation in 2003) in order to control the temperature of the 250 barrels during the cold maceration process, as well aw during their fermentation process.

Today, still fervently driven by pursuing quality, we use other techniques such as harvesting in several passes, creating smaller plots within some non-uniform plots and favoring cold maceration methods. Each vine is known and recorded. The vineyards are primarily planted with 90% Merlot, although the proportion of Cabernet Franc should increase a little in the net few years.

Nothing is left to chance to ensure that Château Le Gay keeps progressing.
