Winery
Château Lagrange is one of the most renowned wineries in Saint-Julien and is classified as Troisième Grand Cru Classé. The estate boasts an impressive contiguous vineyard holding of over 100 hectares, entirely situated within the Saint-Julien appellation. The combination of an exceptional terroir, meticulous vineyard care, and modern winemaking techniques has propelled Château Lagrange to the top of the Médoc over the past decades. Les Fiefs de Lagrange is the château's second wine and offers a more accessible interpretation of the same origin and philosophy. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The vineyards of Château Lagrange are situated entirely in Saint-Julien and span two gently sloping ridges. The soil consists of a subsoil of clay and limestone topped by a layer of gravel and pebbles. These classic Médoc soils provide excellent drainage and encourage the roots to penetrate deep into the ground. The temperate oceanic climate ensures even ripening of the grapes and contributes to the balance between ripeness, freshness, and structure.
Grapes and vineyard management
The 2025 Les Fiefs de Lagrange consists of 57% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot. This is the highest proportion of Merlot ever in this wine. Due to lower Cabernet Sauvignon yields, a larger portion of this grape was reserved for the Grand Vin, giving the Les Fiefs blend a slightly different composition than usual. The vines have an average age of approximately 30 years. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected, first at the cluster level and then individually using optical sorting technology.
Vinification and aging
Vinification takes place plot by plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Each batch is processed separately based on grape variety, terroir, vine age, and fruit ripeness. Fermentation proceeds traditionally for 18 to 25 days. After blending, the wine ages for approximately 13 months. For this, 80% used French oak barrels, 10% new oak barrels, and 10% amphorae are used. This combination ensures refinement and structure without the wood notes becoming dominant. During aging, sur lie maturation contributes extra depth, roundness, and complexity.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color. The nose opens with aromas of black cherries, cassis, blueberries, and ripe plums. Additionally, there are floral notes of violets and subtle nuances of herbs and tree bark. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a juicy fruit core. The tannins are fine and supple, while fresh acidity provides liveliness and balance. The finish is seductive and long, with a subtle grainy texture that adds extra character.
Style and character
The 2025 Les Fiefs de Lagrange has a slightly more generous style than many previous vintages. The high proportion of Merlot gives the wine extra roundness, accessibility, and immediate drinking pleasure. At the same time, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot provide sufficient structure and freshness. This results in a wine that retains the elegance of Saint-Julien but is more accessible than the Grand Vin from Château Lagrange.
Volume
The 2025 growing season saw many hours of sunshine, a mild winter, and a warm, dry summer. Thanks to the cooler temperatures in September, the grapes retained their freshness. The small berries ensured a high concentration of color, aromas, and tannins. At Château Lagrange, the focus was deliberately on balance and refinement rather than maximum power. The result is a wine with great charm, beautiful structure, and aging potential that extends beyond many second wines from Bordeaux.
Food and wine pairings
This Saint-Julien pairs excellently with grilled beef, sirloin, lamb, and duck breast. The wine also comes into its own beautifully with veal, stews, and mushroom dishes. Furthermore, thanks to its juicy fruit expression and refined structure, it is an excellent accompaniment to a classic charcuterie board or aged hard cheeses.

From: Hot Body, Cold Blood: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur (May 2026)
The 2025 Les Fiefs de Lagrange has slightly higher alcohol than the Grand Vin due to the Merlot (13.64%). It has a pure bouquet with black cherry and blueberry fruit, quite floral in style, with violet and potpourri scents. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, one of the juiciest Saint-Juliens that I tasted, with a welcome touch of bitterness to maintain tension on the finish. Enjoy over the first decade of its life.

The Japanese group, Suntory, acquired the domain in 1983. Marcel Ducasse was then recruited together with Kenji Suzuta to carry out the complete restructuring of the vineyard and a spectacular renovation of the entire estate. This first step was to mark the rebirth of Chateau Lagrange. After twenty years of dedicated work, as well as human and technical investments, Lagrange is once again one of the top Grand Cru Classé , focusing over the last twenty years on the production of refined, elegant and expressive wines, in the best Saint-Julien style but also with production methods that substantially reduce the ecological impact.
Located entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation, the Lagrange vineyard stretches in a single block over two north-south rises of Gunzian gravelly soil. In parts large and coarse and in others finer, this gravel is combined with sand or iron-rich clay, depending on the plot. With a height of 24 meters, the center of the domain marks the highest point of Saint-Julien. The estate covers 182 hectares (450 acres), of which 118 hectares (292 acres) are under vines. Most plots have a drainage system.
