Winery Château L'Évangile

Château L'Évangile belongs to the absolute elite of Pomerol and is situated in an exceptional location between Pétrus and Cheval Blanc. The estate is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and is known for a style in which depth, elegance, and terroir expression come together. Under the leadership of winemaker Juliette Couderc, the château has received a clear quality boost in recent years, with greater precision in the vineyard and cellar and a style that displays more personality and finesse. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château L'Évangile is situated in Pomerol, on a terroir of gravel, clay, and iron-rich soils. This combination gives the wine both power and refinement. The clay, in particular, plays an important role in warmer years because it retains moisture better, which proved essential in 2025.

The 2025 vintage began relatively quietly with favorable conditions during budburst and flowering. This was followed by a dry period with rising temperatures and less than 40 mm of rain during the summer. The grapes remained exceptionally small, approximately 30% smaller than normal, which led to high concentration. Rain in mid-August ultimately proved crucial and restored the necessary balance to the vineyard, preserving freshness and aromatic precision. The harvest took place early and under ideal conditions, resulting in a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend of Château L'Évangile 2025 consists of 86% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot forms the base of the wine, providing volume, suppleness, and ripe dark fruit, while Cabernet Franc adds tension, freshness, and aromatic refinement. The small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon brings extra structure. Due to the extreme drought, the grapes remained remarkably small. Cabernet Franc on the gravelly plots sometimes reached only 0.6 to 0.7 grams per berry, resulting in an unusual concentration and structure in the final wine. The low yields clearly contribute to the intensity and precision of this vintage.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest took place between August 26 and September 15. Thanks to the rainfall in August, the grapes were able to ripen further without loss of freshness, resulting in a remarkable balance between concentration and elegance. The aging of the Grand Vin has been adjusted in recent years under the direction of Juliette Couderc. In 2025, approximately 40% of the wine ages in large wooden foudres, alongside about 40% new French oak barrels and a small portion in amphorae. This approach ensures greater precision and less dominant wood influence, allowing the terroir and fruit to come to the fore more purely. The vinification focuses emphatically on balance and refinement. Despite the exceptionally small grapes and high concentration, the style remains controlled and precise, without over-extraction.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 L'Évangile opens initially reservedly but develops beautifully in the glass. Aromas of black cherries, darkcurrants, and ripe blackberries are complemented by mint, juniper, subtle truffle, and light spiciness. Additionally, notes of black olives, tobacco, and liquorice emerge, giving the wine extra depth.

Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a remarkably refined texture. The tannins are creamy and polished, yet clearly structuring. Despite the concentration, the wine never feels heavy. A fine line of acidity provides tension and freshness, while the wine increasingly opens up towards mineral precision and a strikingly saline finish.

What stands out most about this vintage is the combination of power and refinement. This is a classic and very precise Pomerol, with plenty of personality and a clear vertical structure. The finish is long, refined, and impressively persistent.

Development and drinking window

The 2025 Château L'Évangile possesses great aging potential. Although the wine already shows great precision, it clearly requires time to develop its full complexity.

Drinking windows range from 2032 to 2060. Neal Martin emphasizes the personality and tension of the wine, while William Kelley points out the unusual concentration of this vintage. The combination of freshness, concentration, and refined tannins makes this a wine for long aging.

Chateau l'Évangile is a Bordeaux house located on the very famous Pomerol plateau. The winery owned one of the first vineyards of the Pomerol. The Château L'Évangile estate was founded by the Léglise family from Libourne. They were actively involved in the construction of the vineyards of Pomerol in the middle of the 18th century. L'Évangile appeared in the 1741 register under the name of Fazilleau.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate was already close to its current state, with an area of about 13 hectares, when it was sold to a lawyer named Isambert. This lawyer named the estate "L'Évangile". The estate was purchased in 1862 by Paul Chaperon. His descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the owners of the estate until 1990. Paul Chaperon continued to build the estate's reputation and built the residence of L'Évangile in the style of the Second Empire. In the second edition of Cocks Féret in 1868, L'Évangile is listed as a "Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol".

After the death of Paul Chaperon in 1900, the estate was run by his descendants. In 1957, Louis Ducasse took over the estate, which had fallen into disrepair at the time and was also damaged by the frost in 1956. He managed to replant the vineyard and eventually restore it to its former glory. In 1982, his widow Simone Ducasse continued to manage the estate.

In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired the L'Évangile estate from the Ducasse family. They wanted to ensure that the property was maintained to the same high standards as DBR's. The initial influence of DBR (Lafite) included a more refined selection of the Grand Vin and the creation of Blason de L'Évangile as a second wine. Much work was also done to improve the vineyard with a restoration and (partial) renewal plan launched in 1998. The complete renovation of the barrel room and cellar, which was completed in 2004, completed the new state of the property.

The vintages from 1995 to 2005 were a very remarkable decade and crowned the successful work. The vintages 1995, 1996, 2000 and especially 2005 were judged to be truly exceptional!

Chateau l'Évangile has a vinification method where tradition and modern techniques go hand in hand. In 2004, the barrel room and cellars were completely rebuilt to make them more suitable for plot selection. The grapes from each plot are kept separate in batches in order to assess their potential for use in the Grand Vin at the end of fermentation. Traditional and modern winemaking methods are closely linked in all activities of the winery. The fermentation in barrels is carried out using the traditional method of pumping over and controlled maceration, with frequent tasting. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.

A strict selection is carried out in the production of Château L'Évangile and the second wine, Blason de L'Évangile. The average production of Château L'Évangile and its second wine Blason de L'Évangile is 5,000 cases.
