Winery
Madame de Beaucaillou is one of the wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Julien. The château has belonged to the Deuxième Grand Cru Classés since the 1855 classification and is known for its exceptional terroir along the Gironde. Under the leadership of the Borie family, Ducru-Beaucaillou has developed into one of the most esteemed producers in Bordeaux. Madame de Beaucaillou benefits from the same expertise, the same careful selection, and the same philosophy as the estate's greater wines. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The wine comes from vineyards within the Saint-Julien appellation, where deep gravel soils play a crucial role in the quality of the grapes. This famous stony subsoil ensures excellent drainage and optimal ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity of the Gironde acts as a natural temperature regulator, allowing the grapes to retain their freshness even in warm years. The terroir produces wines with refinement, structure, and a characteristic mineral tension.
Grapes and vineyard management
Although the final blend was not officially published, Cabernet Sauvignon plays a strikingly important role in the composition of the 2025. The grapes were harvested early, before the September rainfall, allowing an exceptionally fresh and precise style to be preserved. Low yields are maintained in the vineyards, and each plot selection is assessed individually to use only high-quality grapes.
Vinification and aging
After the harvest, the grapes are carefully selected and vinified separately. Fermentation takes place under controlled conditions to optimally preserve aromatic purity and fruit character. Subsequently, the wine ages in French oak barrels for a period that adds sufficient structure without overpowering the fruit. During aging, sur lie maturation contributes to additional texture, refinement, and complexity.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a bright ruby red color. The nose is dominated by red fruit such as red currants, cherries, and raspberries, complemented by notes of blood orange, mint, and subtle chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is energetic and lively with a beautiful tension between fruit and acidity. The tannins are refined and provide structure without making the wine heavy. The finish is fresh, elegant, and remarkably precise.
Style and character
The 2025 Madame de Beaucaillou reveals a modern and accessible side of Saint-Julien. The emphasis is on freshness, precision, and drinkability, while retaining the typical structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is a charming wine that offers pleasure even when relatively young, yet possesses sufficient depth to age for several more years.
Volume
The 2025 vintage was characterized by a warm growing season, in which an early harvest proved crucial for preserving freshness and tension. At Ducru-Beaucaillou, the harvest was deliberately early before rainfall could affect the quality of the grapes. This resulted in a wine with a strikingly lively profile, fresh acidity, and a clear focus on elegance. The expected drinking window runs from 2027 to 2037. The alcohol percentage has not yet been officially published.
Food and wine pairings
This Saint-Julien pairs excellently with grilled beef, veal, lamb, and poultry. Dishes with mushrooms, charcuterie, or light game dishes also complement the wine's fresh and energetic style beautifully. Thanks to its lively acidity, it is also an excellent accompaniment to dishes with Mediterranean herbs.

From: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur: Le Freak (Apr 2026)
The 2025 Madame de Beaucaillou is absolutely delicious. Bright and fresh in the glass, Madame captures all the vibrancy of this distinctive vintage. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, chalk and mint are beautifully delineated. Picking early ahead of the rains yielded an especially taut, nervy red that is quite contemporary in style and likely to find many fans. Cabernet Sauvignon is quite prominent in the blend this year.

The Borie family has now owned this stately château for three generations, overlooking the Gironde. Since he took over the château in 2003, Bruno Borie has had only one goal: to make Ducru-Beaucaillou one of the best wines in the Médoc. The vineyards are planted with cabernet sauvignon (70%) and merlot (30%). As the name of the château implies, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is blessed with a grand pebble-rich terroir that produces perfect cabernet sauvignon. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from its "beautiful pebbles" ("beaux Cailloux", in French) which geologists less romantically refer to as Gunzian gravel. These quartz pebbles were deposited by the ancient Garonne at the beginning of the early Quaternary, some two million years ago. It is enough to take a walk through the vineyards to find rich lithological finds. Lydian jasper from the Pyrenees, flint, quartz, agatoids ... This Gunzian gravel creates soils poor in plant nutrients. But it is precisely their agricultural scarcity that guarantees the qualitative excellence of the wines. A choice from nature.
At Ducru-Beaucaillou, excellence is formed inch by inch thanks to an understanding of what the vines have to offer. Experience, intuition, asking questions, for a symbiosis with Mother Earth; people only pass through these noble terroirs. Since nature is a "subject of law", every procedure in the vineyard respects the entire ecosystem: herbicides have been abandoned in favor of mechanical weeds and judicious turf; replacing chemical fertilizers with manure and quality compost; insecticides with pheromones to control vine moths or kaolin clay to lure the green locust. Measures to facilitate aeration and sun exposure of the bunches, to avoid Botrytis and, if applicable, bacilli. Constant monitoring of available nitrogen before harvest. Reasonable viticulture, which earned the property ISO 14001 certification in 2016, supplemented with HVE3 certification (high environmental value level 3) since 2017.
