Château Cheval Blanc 2024 – class and precision from a difficult year
The Château Cheval Blanc 2024 demonstrates how great craftsmanship and exceptional terroir can lead to a masterpiece, even under challenging conditions. This Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A is the result of rigorous selection, technical perfection, and an uncompromising vision. Despite the abundant rainfall, 2024 is a vintage of freshness, balance, and texture , with an impressive elegance reminiscent of the legendary 2004.
A year of challenges
The 2024 harvest was marked by exceptional rainfall – from the autumn of 2023 well into the growing season. Mildew and irregular flowering caused heterogeneous ripening and a complex harvesting process. Fortunately, the deep clay soils and Cabernet Franc proved their worth: they held their ground where gravel soils struggled.
The harvest took place from September 18 to October 3 , largely under wet conditions. More than a third of the harvest was rejected or used for second wine and saignée. Nevertheless, through precise selection, the team managed to produce an exceptional Grand Vin, with a vinification yield of only 28 hl/ha – a rare low volume for this icon.
Blending and vinification of the Cheval Blanc
The final blend is powerful and refined:
48% Cabernet Franc – elegance, tension, floral finesse,
46% Merlot – structure, ripe berries, roundness,
6% Cabernet Sauvignon – grip, length, dark depth.
The wine was fermented and aged plot by plot, with a careful selection of only the best lots. The low yield and high proportion of Cabernet Franc give this vintage a very distinctive character.
2024 Cheval Blanc Tasting Notes
Cheval Blanc 2024 reveals aromas of blackcurrant, violets, fresh herbs, and graphite on the nose, underpinned by subtle wood notes. On the palate, it is silky, medium-bodied yet full of tension, with striking energy and freshness . The tannins are fine-grained and contribute to a long, complex finish. A wine that rewards patience and comes into its own after several years of aging.
Availability and food and wine pairing advice
This wine pairs perfectly with refined dishes such as truffle risotto, roasted game, pigeon with figs, or veal in morel sauce.

A blend of 51% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2025 Château Cheval Blanc stands out once again as among the finest wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of blood orange and iris, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific mid-palate density, sweet tannins and a long, vibrant, violet-inflected finish. With its striking aromas, intensity of flavor and resolutely classical proportions (checking in at 12.7% alcohol and pH of 3.76), the 2025 gives every indication of being one of the great Cheval Blancs of the decade.
Despite two notable heat spikes in August, the 2025 growing season at Cheval Blanc wasn't as hot as 2022 and 2023; but it did witness the most pronounced hydric deficit yet recorded at this address. Berries were small, with no Cabernet Franc at more than one gram and Merlot on average 1.1 grams—meaning that fully two kilograms of fruit was required to produce one liter of wine. While the old vines and parcels with more clay held up well, Pierre Olivier Clouet and his team decided to drop fruit from the younger vines on more well-drained soils to reduce the burden on the plants. August rain saved the day and combined with cool nights in September to deliver a brilliant Cheval Blanc, with 46 out of the estate's 47 blocks making it into the grand vin.

Perfumed, with aromas of flowers, brambleberries and wild berries. Medium-bodied with tight, fine tannins that run forever on the palate. Hints of cedar, mushrooms and bark. Crunchy at the end. Just a hint of fancy bitterness and chocolate. Transparent and complete.

From: Hot Body, Cold Blood: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur (May 2026)
The 2025 Cheval Blanc includes all 47 plots on the estate except one that was sold off. This nose is more immediate than some of its neighbours, a mixture of blackcurrant, raspberry, strawberry and blueberry, very expressive, underneath which lie tobacco and graphite scents. It is open, nothing hidden here. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red berry fruit, just a touch of black pepper, a more reserved and structured Cheval Blanc than usual, vertical in style, the Cabernet Franc driving the finish. Not what I would call a sensual Cheval Blanc, but it has a distinctive character. Not everyone is going to fall head over heels for this Cheval Blanc because it is uncompromising, and I like that. Just be patient. This will need time.

Pierre-Olivier Clouet arranged a lunchtime visit for me that included a bottle of the 2010, which he thought would make a useful comparison to their newborn vintage. “The difference in 2025 was the 117 mm of rain in April, whereas it was dry in 2022. So the vines were growing quickly in ‘25. We had a good flowering, and we decreased the potential yield to just 22 hl/ha in the vineyard, one of the smallest ever. The berries were small. We didn’t have any Cabernet Franc over 1 gram (g) this year, and most were around 07-0.8 g. The Merlot came in around 1.1 g. Usually you needed 2 kg of fruit to make one litre of wine. Temperatures were actually cooler than in 2022 and 2023, but we had three peaks that reached 41.6°C during one week in August. Very dry conditions from mid-May through August 20 generated high tannin levels, so we projected a 14.5% wine. The tannins were becoming like 2023, and we wondered if we would be able to ripen them. Then, in one week, we had 60 mm of rainfall. That was a gamechanger. Alcohol went down to 12.7%, and it helped ripen the tannins perfectly. The picking took place between September 1 and 18, and we only had to green harvest for the young vines on gravel, picked at 10 hl/ha. The last vintage like 2025 in terms of analytical figures was 1961, though that one was reduced by frost [instead of small berries/drought]. The 2025s are comparable to the 2010s. but with two degrees less alcohol.”

From: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur: Le Freak (Apr 2026)
The 2025 Cheval Blanc is seamless and textured. A wine of mystery and seduction, the 2025 dazzles. Time in the glass brings out the wine's tension and energy. Sage, mint, lavender, cloves and cool, blue-toned fruit all build in the glass. In one tasting, Cheval Blanc was massively tannic; in a second tasting, those tannins were much more seamless, highlighting how differently wines can show from day to day. In the case of Cheval Blanc, en primeur samples are mini-bottlings, and both samples I tasted came from the same batch.
Yields in 2025 were just 15 hectoliters per hectare, tiny by any measure. The winemaking team, led by Pierre-Olivier Clouet, used 46 of the 47 parcels on the estate for the Grand Vin. A small amount of wine was sold in bulk; the rest was bottled as Grand Vin. There is no Petit Cheval. Time on skins ran from 26 to 32 days, longer than the 22-28 that's more typical. For those who care about the data, alcohol is just 12.7%, which is hard to believe, with brisk acids that clock in at 3.76 pH. In many vintages Cheval Blanc can be exuberant, but the 2025 is rather closed, more of an intellectual wine that will require years in bottle to truly show everything it has to offer.

Pierre-Olivier Clouet is one of those people who always present a candid viewpoint of the vintage. He is not prone to airbrushing out the difficulties or shortcomings of the growing season at an estate that I believe translates the vagaries of the season more than many others.
“The mildew pressure was huge, but we have the ability to deal with it,” he told me in a busy vat room. “What was novel was just how early it was. There was already some mildew during the primeur tastings. The key was to understand that flowering took place over six weeks, whereas a good one would be 12 to 15 days. This resulted in heterogeneity within bunches, so we did some green harvesting. At the beginning of flowering, we let the earlier-ripening bunches rot in order to eventually have the maximum amount of grapes achieve ripeness. It’s a year where it was impossible to be overripe. Secondly, at the end of flowering. We discarded 34% of the crop, so we picked at 39 hl/ha and vinified at 28 hl/ha, with the bain densimètrique reducing the crop. Every evening, we took 300 berries from each parcel to the lab, where we had six batches with different levels of potential alcohol. When we had the sensation that a particular batch had the right level of ripeness, then it would be taken out of the cold room and the fruit would go through the bain densimètrique Even though we don’t like the idea of densimetric, or saignée, or chaptalisation, we did all three because we sought a good percentage of Grand Vin [it is 70% of the average volume in 2024]. We had to increase the Merlot by half a degree, but we didn’t do it for the Cabernet. There are 37 plots in the Grand Vin, eight for Petit Cheval, and three we sold off in bulk.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Cheval Blanc is a blend taken from 37 of the 45 parcels on the property. Dried flowers, mocha, rose petal and blood orange open nicely in the bouquet, leading to an understated mid-palate and a subtly persistent finish. Understated and nuanced, the 2024 offers lovely forward fruit in a soft, accessible style with no hard edges or awkward contours. All the elements are nicely put together, and yet there is no denying the fact that the 2024 is very light. Élevage will be everything here.

Falstaff 100/100 : “Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Intense black forest berries, a hint of juniper, herbs and tobacco, blueberries, candied mandarin zest, very multi-faceted bouquet. Full-bodied, highly elegant, ripe heart cherries, finesse-rich structure, seamless, perfect tannins, a highly delicate wine with enormous length, immense minerality, designed for a long ageing period, a hint of nougat in the finish, an enormous promise for the future”.

Château Cheval Blanc is located within the municipal boundaries of the picturesque village of Saint Emilion, close to the Pomerol appellation. The 37 hectare vineyard is planted with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the first of which is also the most important.
The current Cheval Blanc owners, Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frere, decided in 1998 to seal their shared love of wine with the purchase of a Premier Cru Classé A: Château Cheval Blanc. Daily management is in the hands of Pierre Lurton, who comes from a very well-known family of winemakers and château owners. His presence has allowed Château Cheval Blanc to maintain its top position in Bordeaux for the past ten years.
