Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm and the iconic style of the Mosel
Joh. Jos. Prüm has been among the absolute top winemakers in the Mosel region for generations. Located in Wehlen, the estate is known for its crystal-clear style, low alcohol levels, high extraction, and incredible aromatic purity. Under the leadership of Dr. Katharina Prüm, the estate remains one of Germany's most consistent and admired producers. Its focus is entirely on Riesling, with vineyards spanning some of the region's most prestigious steep slopes.
The estate's style is characterized by a combination of intensity, a delicate structure, and enormous longevity. The wines are slowly fermented, often with natural yeasts, and are aged exceptionally long in tanks before bottling. Thanks to the cool conditions of the Mosel and the old Riesling vines, a style is created that is recognized worldwide as a benchmark for finesse, tension, and aromatic depth.
The terroir of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the Mosel's most famous vineyards, known for its blue slate soils and steep slopes. This combination creates a perfect balance of ripeness, minerality, and crisp acidity. The sunny exposure helps the Riesling grapes fully ripen, while the altitude and microclimate preserve their refinement and aromatic tension.
The blue slate gives the wine its characteristic stoniness, vibrant citrus nuances, and the clear structure that allows Auslesen from this vineyard to age for decades. In 2024, the plots were completely spared from late frost and hail, resulting in exceptionally high quality, although yields were limited by selective picking.
The Riesling grape at its most refined
Riesling is the grape par excellence for Auslese wines, which are made from perfectly ripe and partially dried grapes. In 2024, Riesling produced a wine in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with enormous aromatic richness, fresh acidity, and a subtle, noble sweetness. The combination of ripe white fruit, floral notes, and crystal-clear acidity gives this Goldkapsel an almost weightless precision.
The grapes were meticulously picked in 2024, often in multiple rounds, to maintain the perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. This allowed the winemaker to select the best berries suitable for Auslese Goldkapsel.
Vinification and the exceptional 2024 harvest
The 2024 harvest was marked by a wet spring with almost double the average rainfall. However, this moisture proved beneficial for the steep, well-drained slopes. The summer was without extreme heat, resulting in even ripening and vibrant freshness.
Harvest took place between October 1st and 31st, with intensive selection. Some plots lacked certain levels of quality, such as Kabinett, due to frost and hail damage, but the higher classifications benefited from the strict selection. The Auslese Goldkapsel 2024 was picked after the rains had fallen and the concentration had increased. Vinification was classic: spontaneous fermentation, low alcohol, and extended rest in tank to fully preserve purity and tension.
Color, smell and taste of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel 2024
The color is light and bright golden yellow. On the nose, the wine opens with an explosion of floral aromas, as if stepping into a flower shop. Subtle honey, white peach, citrus zest, and a hint of orange peel give the wine both richness and freshness.
On the palate, the wine is concentrated yet perfectly balanced. The sweet fruit is supported by expressive acidity, giving the wine tension and energy. Juicy white peach, vibrant citrus, and delicate honey notes fill the mouth without becoming heavy. The texture is clear, precise, and almost weightless. The finish is exceptionally long, mineral, and intensely clean, with subtle orange bitters adding elegance.
This Auslese combines deep ripeness with an almost ethereal freshness. Its purity and balance are exceptional, making this 2024 exceptionally appealing.
Development and storage potential
Auslese Goldkapsel is one of the estate's most enduring styles. Thanks to its high acidity, low alcohol, and enormous aromatic intensity, this wine has decades of aging potential. The 2024 vintage can age easily until at least 2065.
In its early years, the wine displays floral intensity, citrus, white peach, and honeyed elegance. With further bottle aging, notes of dried fruit, spices, smoke, tea, and a softer honey texture will develop. The wine's structure and purity guarantee that it will impress at every stage of its long life.

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule / Auction) opens with a very intense but elegant and delicate as well as flinty bouquet with smoked fruit aromas. Very refined and highly elegant on the palate, this is a super finessed and filigreed, weightless, crystalline and irresistible Auslese with a long, intense yet always refined and stimulating saline finish. A fabulous Auslese indeed! 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 18 24 in January 2025.
At the renowned winery in Wehlen in January, I had to taste not only the last but also the penultimate vintage, i.e., 2023 alongside the 2022. I tasted both vintages one after the other, not side by side—the 2023 before lunch, the 2022 afterwards. I don't have a favorite, even though I had thought in advance that the 2023 vintage would have an easy time against its predecessor. But far from it. The hot and dry 2022s at Prüm turned out exceptionally well, and more than once I saw the 2022 ahead of the 2023, but I can't give a plausible reason for this. In any case, Katharina and her team have produced two great collections in two very different and challenging vintages.
The year 2023 began mild and wet. March in particular brought a lot of rain, which continued to a lesser extent into the rather cool April, so the soils were well moistened, quite unlike in 2022, when it was already too dry at this point. Budding did not begin until the end of April. The mild May and hot June were rather dry months. These conditions accelerated the growth of the buds and flowering. In July, there was more rain; and temperatures rose to 35 degrees Celsius at times, but there was also a cooler period with temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius. August was similar, with even more rain and fewer warm days. In September, temperatures barely dropped and averaged 3.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average. The harvest began very early on September 18 and ended on October 11. “As the temperatures remained warm in October and ripening progressed quickly, we made sure to complete the harvest as quickly as possible,” reports Katharina Prüm.
Prüm was able to harvest all grades from Kabinett to Beerenauslese, with the main focus on Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. The beautiful botrytis can be found again in a range from golden capsules to Beerenauslese. Overall, the wines of the 2023 vintage are classic in style: pure, clear, filigreed and fresh, with fine fruit ripeness, weightless elegance and stimulating crystalline acidity.
The year 2022 was one of the warmest and driest since records began and was characterized by unusually low rainfall between March and early September. This year also started with quite mild temperatures. While January was characterized by a lot of precipitation (63% above average), February already brought exceptionally mild temperatures. From March to April, temperatures returned to normal, although these months were already unusually dry.
Budding took place in the second half of April. May and June continued to be dry and very warm. Flowering took place early at the beginning of June. The weather conditions then became more extreme in July. It became significantly warmer and, above all, very dry. There were only two millimeters of precipitation in the entire month! “While temperatures normally start to drop in August, this was not the case in 2022,” says Prüm. “August was the warmest month of all.” Half of the month was over 30 degrees Celsius. Even though there was significantly more rain than in July, it remained very dry. It was not until September that the weather changed. The temperatures dropped and it started to rain—a great relief for nature in general. And according to Prüm, the rain did not harm the grapes.
The harvest began on September 19 and ended on October 22. Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese could be produced. And although it was not a vintage characterized by botrytis, Prüm was able to sort two gold capsules, in the Bernkasteler Lay and in the Graacher Himmelreich. There is a Lange Goldkapsel from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr.
Prüm's 2022s are surprisingly clear, taut and elegant and are not inferior to the 2023s in terms of quality, especially not the Spätlese and Auslese wines. This is possibly because Prüm carried out an extensive green harvest in the summer to relieve and preserve the vines and improve the quality of the grapes.

This smells like an entire florist’s store, but there’s nothing overpowering about it at all. Very concentrated and complete, with fantastic floral honey richness and great underlying freshness, this is a very great Mosel Auslese. Still only medium-bodied in spite of the generous unfermented grape sweetness, and so incredibly clean and pure in the super-long finish. Drink or hold.

The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel is alive with citrus foliage, zest and the sweetest fruit aromas. Its tanginess tingles on the nose and continues right on the palate. Vivid freshness and poise define pale white peach flesh on the palate, tempered by a gorgeous, tangy orange peel note that attains a subtle edge of candy. The 2024 is superbly fine, stony, linear and, of course, delicious. It is so poised and clean. (Sweet)

Dr. Katharina Prüm reported only marginal frost damage in Graach and Bernkastel, with Wehlen and Zeltingen spared completely. However, hail hit sites in Graach and Bernkastel, which meant limited quantities from these sites. The wet spring brought almost twice the average precipitation, a boon for the well-drained slopes. Apart from a few hot days in August, there were no extreme temperatures in the summer. Harvest took place between October 1 and 31, with a short break for rain. After the rain, Prüm was able to pick some Auslesen and Auslesen Goldkapsel. “We selected a lot and visited many parcels often due to relatively uneven ripeness within the same vine. We kept checking and picking what was right, so it turned into a laborious harvest,” she said. There is no Kabinett from the Badstube in 2024, due to frost and hail. The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive.

Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for more than 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business.
Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
