Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm and the finesse of classic Mosel Riesling
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of Germany's most admired wineries and is known worldwide for its delicate, slow-growing Rieslings. The estate is led by Dr. Katharina Prüm, who continues her family's traditional style: low alcohol, lively acidity, very slow fermentation, and a strong focus on purity. The result is a range of wines that remain impressive both young and after decades of aging.
The house's Auslese wines are among the world's most iconic white wines. They combine refined sweetness with an almost weightless structure and the mineral precision typical of the steep slopes along the Mosel. The 2024 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is one of the highlights of a vintage described by critics as a sensational classic.
The characterful terroir of Graacher Himmelreich
Graacher Himmelreich is one of the Mosel's most famous Premier Cru-style vineyards. The slopes are primarily composed of blue slate, which absorbs the sun's heat and releases it at night. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, resulting in wines with tension, minerality, and refined fruit expression.
In 2024, Graach experienced minor frost damage, but the plot remained largely unscathed compared to other villages. A wet spring provided ample water reserves in the soil, while the summer, free of extreme heat, was perfect for aromatic development. Harvesting took place in October and required extensive selection due to the variable ripeness within the same vineyard. This resulted in lower yields but exceptionally high quality.
The Riesling grape in an extremely elegant way
Riesling develops a unique profile in Graacher Himmelreich, distinguished by citrus-driven aromas, refined herbs, and a salty, mineral tension. In 2024, the Auslese was made from completely healthy grapes, free of significant botrytis. This results in a style that is pure, sleek, energetic, and brilliantly layered.
This wine boasts immense aromatic complexity: Amalfi lemon, pomelo, green mandarin, fresh herbs, and slightly tropical notes blend harmoniously. The sweetness is present yet elegant, fully supported by the lively, racy acidity.
The 2024 harvest and vinification
The wet spring gave the vines a healthy start to growth, while the temperate summer promoted the development of aromatic freshness. During the harvest, from October 1st to 31st, the winemaking team picked with great precision, often plot by plot and several times a week.
The vinification process remained classic: slow, cool fermentation and further aging in stainless steel. The focus is on maximum purity and preserving the Riesling's natural elegance. Thanks to the absence of botrytis, this Auslese is exceptionally clear and straightforward in style.
Colour, aroma and taste of Graacher Himmelreich Auslese 2024
The color is light golden yellow with green nuances. On the nose, the wine reveals a subtle, almost shy aroma of lemon zest, Amalfi lemon, and a hint of mint. With a little air, notes of green mandarin peel, pomelo, and a delicate mineral smoky note unfold.
The palate is delicately sweet, yet remarkably fresh and linear. The first impression is bright citrus fruit; followed by green plum, white peach, and a light spiciness. The acidity is lively and straightforward, with a tingling, almost sorbet-like mouthfeel. The finish is long, slender, mineral, and remarkably dry thanks to the high, energetic acidity.
Maturation potential and development
This Auslese, thanks to its structure, acidity, and purity, has the potential to age until at least 2065. In its early years, the wine primarily displays citrus-driven elegance and precision. With further aging, notes of honey, chamomile, dried peach, and soft herbs emerge, while the mineral intensity remains.
For lovers of classic Mosel wines, this is a vintage that has everything it takes to become one of the great Himmelreich Auslesens of recent years.

In spite of the generous ripeness, the dominant aromas and flavors are Amalfi lemons, yellow grapefruit and pomelo with some fresh herbal notes. Very bright and racy, the finish much drier than you might expect for this frankly sweet category. Long, energetic, herbal finish with fascinating grapefruit bitterness and salty minerality. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

From: 2024 Mosel, Saar and Ruwer: Tales of Woe and Wow (Oct 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese contains almost no botrytized fruit. Only the slightest note of zesty lemon breaks through on the shy nose. More air reveals a hint of mint sorbet. The palate, however, adds an intriguing sweetness that is so akin to the wonderfully zesty notions of green tangerine peel. The next wave of flavor pushes into greengage and juicy white peach notes, always tempered by vivid citrus. The 2024 has gorgeous linearity and such a tingling, sherbet-like insistence. It is simply wonderful and so utterly balanced. (Sweet)- By Anne Krebiehl MW on August 2025
Dr. Katharina Prüm reported only marginal frost damage in Graach and Bernkastel, with Wehlen and Zeltingen spared completely. However, hail hit sites in Graach and Bernkastel, which meant limited quantities from these sites. The wet spring brought almost twice the average precipitation, a boon for the well-drained slopes. Apart from a few hot days in August, there were no extreme temperatures in the summer. Harvest took place between October 1 and 31, with a short break for rain. After the rain, Prüm was able to pick some Auslesen and Auslesen Goldkapsel. “We selected a lot and visited many parcels often due to relatively uneven ripeness within the same vine. We kept checking and picking what was right, so it turned into a laborious harvest,” she said. There is no Kabinett from the Badstube in 2024, due to frost and hail. The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive.

Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for more than 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business.
Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
