history of Château Léoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux's most historic and respected estates. The estate is part of the once vast Léoville estate, which was divided in the 18th century. Since then, Las Cases has been the flagship of the Delon family, who have managed the vineyards with precision and vision for generations. The wine is often considered one of Bordeaux's greatest wines and is praised for its consistency, longevity, and distinct terroir expression.

the terroir of Saint-Julien

The Léoville Las Cases vineyards are located in the Grand Enclos, on the edge of the Gironde estuary. The terroir consists of Quaternary gravel deposits, with underlying layers of sandy and clayey soils. This variation in subsoil, combined with the influence of the river, ensures early grape ripening and protection from frost. The microclimate gives the wines a unique tension and aromatic complexity. This terroir diversity forms the basis for the power and elegance of Las Cases.

the harvest year 2024

The year 2024 brought challenges, but also opportunities. A wet winter replenished water reserves, followed by a rainy spring that required constant attention to control powdery mildew. The summer was drier, allowing the berries to ripen evenly. The harvest took place from September 30th to October 9th and was carried out with the utmost precision. The result is a vintage that combines the freshness of Merlot with the depth and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wine is noble and elegant, with a classic Saint-Julien profile.

blending and vinification

The 2024 Château Léoville Las Cases is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot. It reaches an alcohol content of 13.1%, with a pH of 3.60 and an IPT of 76. The wine was aged in 75% new French oak, which gives the wine structure, complexity, and refined aromatic layers. Thanks to strict selection and modern cellar facilities, only a portion of the harvest is included in the Grand Vin, maintaining exceptionally high quality.

tasting notes of the 2024 Léoville Las Cases

In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark purple color with violet reflections. The bouquet is layered and complex, with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, graphite, violets, tobacco, and subtle woody notes. Tasters describe the character as mineral, refined, and vibrant. The palate is powerful yet balanced, with a full structure, elegant acidity, and fine, chalky tannins. The finish is long and precise, with notes of red fruit, spices, and a hint of cedar.

Critics unanimously praised the wine: James Suckling (97–98), Vinous (94–96), Wine Advocate (93–95), and Wine Cellar Insider (95–97) called it one of the benchmarks of the vintage. Weinwisser even rated it 19.5/20 and described it as "the best wine from Saint-Julien" this year.

In the heart of the Médoc, Château Léoville Poyferré has always been one of the most prestigious wineries. There was once a single domain called Léoville that was famous throughout the region. In the course of history it has come into the possession of different families through heirs and major events. In 1865 the domain came into the hands of the bankers Baron d'Erlanger and Armand Lalande. They had to contend with setbacks, in the form of the grape aphid and mildew epidemics. Today the castle belongs to the Cuvelier family. They have invested enormously since the 1980s with extraordinary results. Today the château belongs to the top of the Saint-Julien.
